where did I say anything about What’s Going On?? it’s a great album that I listened to a lot at one point in my life, a long time ago. I might have put it on (so to speak) once or twice in the past decade and I have no inclination whatsoever to continuously have it at the front of my mind to gauge all the new (to me) music I’m listening to against. what would be the fucking point of that?
this apparently bottomless obsession with the various reshufflings of a very limited set of albums (or definition of what is relevant music even) is extremely tiresome - ILM at its worst.

I think the most demoralizing ILM occurrence lately was that BOC v. BOC poll, harmlessly frivolous in itself but it got like 140 votes! I had no idea the borad had become a place for silent lurkers to click on polls to that extent

for me it was the hostile takeover of the Best Album on My Favourite Albums Of... polls last year. the 70s ones were fun, diverse, and inclusive, but after that they became gradually more policed and by the time we got to the 90s all the fun had been sucked out of the whole thing. it was like opening a door and suddenly realising you are very much in the wrong room, an unwelcoming fiefdom.

(but if anything, the number of votes only increased iirc)
