The short answer to this question is the girls I was with during this time weren't ready for it, and since I didn't know any different, it didn't bother me. I know now that intercourse is awesome, but back then just seeing someone naked and experiencing some degree of sexual pleasure with them was enough (sometimes it still is).

By that definition only penis-to-vagina intercourse is sex though, everything else has those labels. So gays and lesbians aren't really having sex, they just think they do.
