tbf Bobbins threads are usually house AND techno. I'm not a big techno fan either, but I could see the appeal of it on some big ass speakers.

DJI, Monday, 24 August 2020 17:09 (three years ago) link

But yeah, these threads usually abide by the "if you don't have something nice to say..." rule. It's nice to see some opinions.

DJI, Monday, 24 August 2020 17:11 (three years ago) link

Lets just say the chippy was closed that day

saer, Monday, 24 August 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

lets see what happens when people stop being polite... and start getting real

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 24 August 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

These threads used to be hotbeds of opinion! But there were more posters and more of a zeitgeist at the time that I started posting.

I just don't see the harm in saying I don't like something! And then coming around and essentially posting some toughguy shit, even in jest, is far worse than saying I can't stand it.

i'm sorry, but there is nothing dickish about posting that obviously absurd image

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 24 August 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

I guess I'll just stay on the porch.

peder mannerfelt is insane and good and not boring though imo, table you're missing out if you let that one turn you off completely.

I rarely feel negative about something I don't like. I listen to a bunch of nonsense in a record shop or online, and most of it is no good but I just see it as things that didn't really pan out and then forget about them.

I might like it another time who knows!

saer, Monday, 24 August 2020 17:28 (three years ago) link

I hate that vocal sample. Like absolutely loathe it.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Monday, 24 August 2020 17:29 (three years ago) link

Like if I wanted a techno version of the Dumb and Dumber 'most annoying sound in the world,' that would be it.

I actually do like some of his other work. I was surprised.

i relate to that unusually straightforward saer post

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 24 August 2020 17:41 (three years ago) link

same

very little actually irritates me, it’s just not for me. or maybe just not for me right now!

i’ve posted a bit on some bobbins-ish stuff not really clicking for me until i’ve experienced it in the natural habitat

saer, Monday, 24 August 2020 17:53 (three years ago) link

there's definitely bobbinsy stuff that irritates me, i get irritated by boring music. literally everything anyone posts to these threads i enjoy on some level though. the really bad boring stuff i only hear from a few local djs who think they are really hot shit. where and how do they find such crappy music? mysteries abound.

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Monday, 24 August 2020 20:24 (three years ago) link

I have become allergic to a lot of the more plinky minimal stuff, and certain strains of big room techno just turn me off. I'm really into electro right now, though, so that might just be where my ears are at.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Monday, 24 August 2020 21:26 (three years ago) link

I can imagine myself dancing head down in a dark basement club to the Peder Mannerfelt so it gets a tick of approval from me

mickcsmith (micarl), Monday, 24 August 2020 21:31 (three years ago) link

well why didn't you say, we've got electro big dogs for you to run with right here

xp i'm kinda back and forth on the "bristol techno" sound. sometimes a little too grey and po-faced for me. but man when it hits it hits!! thanks for that micarl!!

the late great, Friday, 28 August 2020 19:03 (three years ago) link

Just want to say that I'm in favor of people not liking things and saying so. Also it's funny to think that a few years ago I would have been laughing at the narcissism of small differences between music that all has the same beat (more or less) and is made out of short loops, but of course that's reductive. And even though I'm still not a big techno/house head, I have a lot more appreciation for the large effects that small differences can have. And if your track is a one bar loop, it's way harder than it looks to find the one bar loop that doesn't get boring or annoying over the course of 4 - 8 min.

Also this is a banger imo:

super good

lukas, Friday, 28 August 2020 20:06 (three years ago) link

i'm not for or against people not liking things. not liking things is a natural part of life.

but long ago i realized that "writing about music" really is "dancing about architecture". and 90% of the "serious pop music criticism" on this board is actually not music criticism at all, it's just really bad cod-sociology (the right kind of people like this so it must be good! the wrong kind of people like this, so it must be bad!) or even worse, pointless and absurd speculation about shit 99% of people on this board really know nothing about (the internal life of the artists who made the music and the techniques they used to make it)

so given that none of us really have anything interesting or meaningful to say about music, we can either be either supportive and make people feel good when they post bobbins (by appreciating what they posted) or we can be whiny and passive-aggressive and make them feel bad about posting (by complaining about what they posted).

so i choose to say nice things when i can say nice things, and in general to say nothing when i can't say nice things, because i want to make people feel good if i can and i want to avoid making people feel bad

anyone who knows my 20 year ILX posting history is probably snickering at that statement, but hey the wisdom of age etc

the late great, Friday, 28 August 2020 20:27 (three years ago) link

where is the right thread to post things like "I guess Loraine James is just buy on sight huh"

lol @ the late great’s late-breaking pacifism

Tim F, Friday, 28 August 2020 20:55 (three years ago) link

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

what can i say i'm a man of peace now

the late great, Friday, 28 August 2020 21:01 (three years ago) link

i think when someone is actually super knowledgeable about a specific niche there is an opportunity for interesting negative criticism, but the smug, dilettantish kind of dismissal typically seen in EOY threads is embarrassing imo. i don't mind negative reactions here, i genuinely did enjoy seeing some opinions. though i am glad some people said they enjoyed the tracks i posted, otherwise i might've concluded i just don't belong on the bobbins thread anymore

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 28 August 2020 21:02 (three years ago) link

yeah i don't mind "that track has annoying sounds" or "i'm sort of over x or y" but am definitely turned off by / would want to avoid snobbery or reverse snobbery.

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 28 August 2020 21:06 (three years ago) link

xxxp

haha, Tim F!

I agree with most of the post, tlg. I now mostly resist making negative comments apart from when you really feel the urge to make a particular point. I'd criticise someone's opinion on a movie or book more readily but I'd still be reluctant to do so about something someone liked a lot but then again sometimes you've watched Midsommar and you really need to say something.
