i never got into ilx politics threads, i think the time i was most invested and reading regularly was c. 2012 election when then-under-30 poster iatee and then-over-30 poster ice cr?m had a fun dialogue going on. it was the golden age of nate silver; i learned a lot and was entertained. in general though the politics threads seemed full of groany cynicical humor

in terms of academic and policy side of politics on the internet more broadly, things are pretty good rn imho. in part this is due to lots of smart academics entering discussions on twitter and becoming more engaged, but also the usual uncredentialed autodidact blogger-type people. there are also a bunch of gen-z kids who migrated to twitter from somewhere on reddit who have a kind of analytic socialist meme style that i enjoy a lot, and learn neat facts about social democracy around the world from.

i read great stuff pretty much every day. it’s more long-term policy stuff and less day-to-day rat-race strategic stuff so ymmv. despite the “culture war” being really big, it’s still possible to block most of it out. the trick is, you can’t just unfollow direct perpetuators (woke ppl and ppl who talk about how woke ppl have gone too far) u also need to unfollow the ppl who constantly post about how exasperated they are with the culture war

I'm a 2016 Clinton 2020 Warren guy who really likes Barack Obama and Joe Biden, I give money to candidates up and down the ballot, I could not be more "the Democrats as they are right now" and I will be over the moon when we nominate Ocasio-Cortez. As everybody in this thread says, she is GOOD at this. There are not many natural political talents like hers and Obama's. When you have one of those people in the party, they run and they win.

The knock on the DNC is that it consists of and is run for people like me. (over 45, professional job, homeowner.) I think that's a fair knock. But the people I know are all pretty psyched about Ocasio-Cortez. So why wouldn't the DNC be?

aoc is very close ideologically to sanders and all signs so far point to her walking that walk. so no, obama is not going to be cheering her on unless that changes. and also if that doesn't change i would bet against her being a presidential candidate for the democrats.

I think AOC 100% has a political career beyond her current office, and that totally could include a presidential run. If the concern is that Nancy Pelosi will stand in her way, keep in mind that Pelosi will be pushing 90 by the time this might happen.

She might be minority leader of the Democratic rump after two years of austerity under Biden, so she’ll get to give some good speeches!

Like if you're a Democrat, who do you see being more able to generate a huge wave of voter enthusiasm that brings you House and Senate majorities and wins you seats in state legislatures too -- Pete Buttigieg? I like the guy but come on. (And Ocasio-Cortez seems canny enough to understand that the party has to do work to *maintain* those state legislative gains, something the Obama-led party completely dropped the ball on.)

Buttigieg generates no enthusiasm. He's the candidate for what people imagine Warren fans are. He's a corporate non-entity without even Harris' charisma -- and I don't think either is politically skilled.
