someone has taken the time to write a post complaining about the removal of invasive tree species from a park, comparing it to eugenics and genocide during WWII

I joined a Facebook group for my adopted hometown of St. Marys. 5,800 members; the population here is 6,000, so...well, there are probably a lot of former residents who are in there too. I have to censor myself on Facebook all the time as is (not for profanity or wacko opinions, just for gentle kidding around that doesn't always go over well on Facebook), and I'll have to work doubly hard with this group. A lot of senior citizens here. There was a post earlier today asking "Where is the closest place to St. Marys to get a covert test?" I did not reply "Probably CIA headquarters."

The gypsies are at it again, offering to repave people's driveways with leftover asphalt.

I'd try to correct the slur, but calling them "Arkansas Travelers" probably isn't going to take me far.

Love it when folks from "Golf Course East" slag White Hall though.

pplains, Sunday, 3 January 2021 17:33 (three years ago) link

do they live on a golf course? wouldn't then the driveways be all grass and not require paving?

I have a theory that if a "What's the best ___ food in the area?" thread is left up long enough, every single place in the area that serves ___ food will eventually be named by at least one person, no matter how awful.

My neighborhood has its issues, but I appreciate that a regular feature of our FB group is warnings that the damn maskless Baptists from a local church are door-to-door knockin' again.

Our neighborhood group is mostly about fireworks, helicopters, dogs off leash and (sometimes) coyotes.

on nextdoor, a guy around the corner from me, who is a fireman, posted yesterday that his "baby boy" (an adorable 10-month-old kitten with a blue collar) is missing, asking people to please grab his "lil man" if they see him. someone posted a screenshot from facebook that a woman in the building found him. come to find out the fireman's WIFE put the cat out, then LIED TO THE WOMAN WHO FOUND THE LIL MAN, and has now posted in her defense "i asked you repeatedly if we could get rid of the cat" AS;FDLKJSDF;LSGKJGJJGJDFGLKJJJJJJ

i don't know how I got subscribed to NextDoor but it's a veritable serial journal of unfounded paranoia.

"strange guy walking near my apartment" is like every other message and I'm sure the guy's crime was wearing a torn AC/DC shirt and not having brushed his hair yet.

…a busker?

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Thursday, 25 November 2021 03:27 (two years ago) link

Apparently the "scam" is that they mime to a recording but pretend they are playing. So a busker minus I guess, but not much different than 80% of the people asking for money on the subway because their mom needs surgery or they just need to get home to NJ or whatever.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 25 November 2021 03:34 (two years ago) link

there was a guy who used to do p much the same thing in my work subway stop, although it was really fucking obvious and just kind of sad. The Violin Scammer strikes again.

Not a neighborhood group, but I took on a moderator's role with the small-town FB group where I live a few months ago. It's something else...Can't talk about it, though; they're very Fight Club about telling tales out of school.

clemenza, Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:07 (two years ago) link

xpost unless these folks are in a saturated busking area and stealing money from other buskers, which in these cases they usually are most def not, seems weird to spend a lot of time on the internet complaining about it

Cool Im An Situation (Neanderthal), Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:09 (two years ago) link

yeah so I also just learned that this is apparently some kind of burgeoning national trend? Is there like a violin-syncing ring out there, like was rumored to be the case with the "deaf" guys who handed out the cards? Or is this just an IRL viral way of making money? It's mildly scummy but relatively harmless. Several people in the thread suggested calling the police, don't think it breaks any laws.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:26 (two years ago) link

yeah call the violin police

Cool Im An Situation (Neanderthal), Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:26 (two years ago) link

It's terrible. How am I supposed to explain to my kids that that abysmal pantomime is not what real bowing technique looks like?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:34 (two years ago) link

as a childhood violin player from like grades 4 - 12, violin scamming is cool and funny

mh, Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:40 (two years ago) link

if it looks really dramatic (see movie: The Red Violin) tip extra

Mh you must have been a suzuki child

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:41 (two years ago) link

Yes and no? We had no suzuki schools at all, but books 1-3 or so were basically the handbook for teaching kids strings. We didn’t do the “method,” though

amazing books for the fundamentals, but once you got into private lessons there were a couple drill/arpeggio books that were fire and would let you roast competition due to those being basics of high level playing

mh, Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:45 (two years ago) link

I honestly thought OP was someone trying to describe a "violent scammer".

I stand corrected.

pplains, Thursday, 25 November 2021 05:01 (two years ago) link

I see the PA buskers in grocery store parking lots all the time, never occurred to me it might be fake.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 25 November 2021 05:25 (two years ago) link

someone needs to stand up for authenticity in violin playing.

if not you, then who?
