this is a great article on the celtics strategies to defend embiid: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/when-joel-embiid-posts-up-the-celtics-are-ready/?addata=espn:boston:index

they have to be the best background switching team in the nba.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:29 (three years ago) link

read that earlier and like it for the most part BUT it using three seasons of data to make arguments about this series is kinda lame, embiid has actually been dominating this year hes like 30-15 every night, and previous years they had al horford, one of the best post defenders

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:33 (three years ago) link

btw they played horf big minutes tonight instead of trying to match up with bostons perimeter guys and what do you know their D was much better, playing yr best guys is a good idea

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:36 (three years ago) link

yeah that's fair, i just like that it shows what strategies you can use against a dominating post guy when you don't have the right one on one defender. making him catch it further out, bringing the double at the right time, playing 2 against 3 on the weak side are all things they've used in this series to at least some effect.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:36 (three years ago) link

yeah the stuff about the scheme was good

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:37 (three years ago) link

tho i do think it gave boston too much credit for making embiid catch in bad spots a lot of that is he just gets tired and stops trying to get position + phillys offense is trash they dont really do anything clever to get him into his spots

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:39 (three years ago) link

yeah it's probably a natural tendency for philly that has become a point of emphasis for boston's defense, like once you notice that trend especially later in the game just tell your centers to nudge him out as far as possible.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:42 (three years ago) link

watching the refs bail spent embiid out down the stretch tonight was pitiful he was just turning into guys and throwing the ball up in whatever random direction one of his shots landed over near the corner of the court and it wasnt any sort of hard foul he was just flailing, then they finally let a couple of those plays go down the stretch and that was that

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:44 (three years ago) link

i'm starting to wonder where embiid goes from here. it's becoming clear he can't carry a starter's load for a full game when it matters. do his teams just keep kidding themselves that he can or what?

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:48 (three years ago) link

he can probably get in better shape, and play in a style/system thats less taxing than just fighting in the post all night, feel like a change of scenery might be useful

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:52 (three years ago) link

but hes obvs not super passionate about being good at basketball so who knows

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:53 (three years ago) link

yeah part of my thinking is that he's had opportunities to get in shape and yet i'm not sure he's ever actually been in shape. so maybe this is just the shape he's in, to paraphrase the band

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:55 (three years ago) link

its pretty clear that he hasnt put the work in in general but maybe if he got traded to a good org hed come to jesus

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:57 (three years ago) link

rick carlisle should prob adjust his strategy of having maxi kleiba check kawhi leonard every possession

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 02:58 (three years ago) link

Not quite as ugly as Ionescu's sprain but ugh.

Fetchboy, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:01 (three years ago) link

the real way the sixers fucked up was trading valuable role players for half a season of jimmy butler

i dunno... they may have made the finals had they won that game 7. if they re-signed butler and did other stuff with the tobias/horford money they’d prob be right in the thick of it again in that celtics/raptors tier

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:03 (three years ago) link

TNT has gone into commercials playing master p and travis porter tonight

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:03 (three years ago) link

i can't remember but did jimmy ever want to re-sign with them?

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:06 (three years ago) link

my understanding is they only wanted to give him 4 years and so that was kind of the end of it

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:08 (three years ago) link

my assumption is if they offer him the contract he wants he takes it... he actually liked the sixers from what i can gather. he still hangs out w simmons off the court

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:09 (three years ago) link

he never really clicked there basketball wise and showed up on the heats doorstep the first day of free agency but who knows

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:19 (three years ago) link

he may have wanted out to find a place where he could alpha dog in peace... either way the sixers reasoning was the longterm concern of the contract which doesn’t really make sense to me when the embiid-simmons core needs to be maxed out asap

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:20 (three years ago) link

and given the contracts they signed instead with worse vets

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:23 (three years ago) link

yeah i mean if youre gonna trade for him then u gotta sign

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:26 (three years ago) link

mb they thought they cld get him for cheap since he was such a psycho in minny oh well

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:27 (three years ago) link

man paul george is having a rough couple games here

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:28 (three years ago) link

sixers argument would prob be that they got horford on a shorter deal with some non guaranteed money but they’re paying him almost $100 million for his age 33-36 seasons so it’s like... you balked at paying jimmy butler $40 million when he’s 35 but will give al horford

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:30 (three years ago) link

$28 million.... for a fit that doesn’t work. i just don’t think there’s a string of logic connecting the moves they made this offseason

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:31 (three years ago) link

the logic was how about a team of all centers

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:33 (three years ago) link

it’s true... it’s funny how much space hinkie still occupies in conversations about the sixers when the current story is they hired an ex player center who destroyed their team to sign a center

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:34 (three years ago) link

the whole colangelo crew has a lot to answer for

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:37 (three years ago) link

when kawhi wants to take a game over it still feels like nobody can beat him, to me. everyone on podcasts recently has been tripping all over themselves to say that giannis is “still the best player in the league” but like......

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:40 (three years ago) link

man paul george is having a rough couple games here

― lag∞n, Friday, August 21, 2020 11:28 PM (eleven minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

when i watch him in games like this i'm like dude what exactly are you good at?

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:41 (three years ago) link

kawhi vs. giannis is an indicator of the fact that the nba has definitively separated the regular season from the playoffs

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:43 (three years ago) link

Re: Butler staying in Philly, when he was on Reddick's podcast, he was pretty clear that he wasn't impressed with Brett Brown. Also, after the season was over, he heard some talk that Sixers were concerned with whether they could "control him" and he got pissed and started looking elsewhere thinking they probably weren't going to sign him. My sense is the Sixers liked Harris better because he was a "team player." Oops.

The Horford thing is inexplicable.

trunk's full of pearl and lonestar (PBKR), Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:44 (three years ago) link

some of it had to be them getting caught up in the idea of stealing him from boston

lag∞n, Saturday, 22 August 2020 03:53 (three years ago) link

Yah that jj pod with Jimmy was great

Spottie, Saturday, 22 August 2020 04:51 (three years ago) link

Tobias Harris and Al Horford are without a made 3-point shot so far in this series. Only two players (Richardson and Milton) have made more than one 3-point shot in the series.

Why did they even sign Harris then. He’s their best threat from three. What a mess

I don’t want to be alarmist but there’s gotta be some guys who aren’t 100% because of covid right. Mo bamba had to leave the bubble for vague covid recovery reasons... it’s not the flu
