Damon and his wife were pulled over at around 1:23 a.m. on Feb. 19 in Windermere, Fla. after cops say he was swerving on the road and driving erratically.

Once a cop stopped Damon ... body cam footage captured the 47-year-old ex-Yankee and Red Sox outfielder admitting to drinking before getting behind the wheel.

Then, an intense standoff between the officer, the ex-MLB star and the baseball player's wife ensued.

In the video, you can see the officer ordered Damon and his wife, Michelle Mangan-Damon, to stay in the car, but neither complied ... and a pushing and shoving squabble broke out.

At one point, the officer grabbed Mangan-Damon's wrist ... before Johnny got involved to separate the two.

The bumping and pushing got so heated, the officer's body camera was actually knocked to the ground.

Fortunately for all parties, backup arrived, and officers were able to settle down the scene.

Damon and his wife repeatedly talked about their support for cops, mentioning over and over, "Blue lives matter."

And, at one point, Damon brought up his affinity for Trump to a cop, saying "Hey, bro, I'm a good f***ing guy. I know people are trying to target me because I'm a Trump supporter."

Damon was then asked to complete some field sobriety tests ... but you can see on the video, it doesn’t look like he exactly passed any of them with flying colors.

Damon was ultimately arrested and booked on multiple charges, including driving under the influence and resisting arrest without violence.

A police report later showed cops said Damon's blood-alcohol level was .30, nearly FOUR TIMES the legal limit.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 10 March 2021 03:24 (three years ago) link

“Damon was then said to have hurled the body cam away, but it only travelled 5 feet and continued recording the scene.”

Bauer’s career is in jeopardy, and his stay with the Dodgers could be over, the sexual-assault allegations having turned a pitcher in his prime into a pariah in his own clubhouse, where no teammate has spoken publicly about him or come to his defense. Two people with knowledge of Dodgers clubhouse dynamics, who are unauthorized to speak publicly about the situation, said that a majority of players do not want Bauer back under any circumstances.

mookieproof, Friday, 29 April 2022 19:56 (one year ago) link

Wow, that is a lot longer than I thought he would get. Dodgers are off the hook on paying him further. I'm sure he will appeal.

Bee OK, Friday, 29 April 2022 20:03 (one year ago) link

i'm honestly very surprised. charges against him were dropped, no?

what is the difference between Bauer and what Ozuna did which only got him 20 games? I mean fuck this guy and I hope he never pitches again but I'm not used to y'know, actual punishments like this

frogbs, Friday, 29 April 2022 20:11 (one year ago) link

Osuna's may have been worse? He assaulted his gf but she declined to press charges. Bauer fought his criminal charges in court and won.

Their punishments from MLB are in no way consistent but whatever, Bauer's career is over. I'm sure he saved a nice retirement nest egg from "earning" his $40M salary last year.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 29 April 2022 20:22 (one year ago) link

Think the difference may be that Ozuna cooperated? Even so that is a massive discrepancy

, Friday, 29 April 2022 20:29 (one year ago) link

i'm not as familiar with what happened with Ozuna – but to me the big difference might simply be that Bauer is a lot more well known

Oh wait I was talking about Roberto Osuna, you guys meant Marcell Ozuna. The point is the same though.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 29 April 2022 21:15 (one year ago) link

reasons i suspect:

- bauer is famous, and famously a loud asshole, and one of the best-payed players in the sport
- the bauer stuff is sexual
- ozuna's wife has also been arrested for domestic violence
- bauer's victim(s) are (presumably) white american women; ozuna's wife is not

for better or worse, bauer playing is just much more likely to raise a public outcry

mookieproof, Friday, 29 April 2022 21:34 (one year ago) link

Also all good points

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/04/29/trevor-bauer-abuse-accusations/

As MLB suspends Trevor Bauer, a new accuser speaks out

The first time Trevor Bauer choked her unconscious without her consent — in 2013, a woman in Columbus, Ohio, said — all she remembered afterward was waking up on his bathroom floor.

Months later, she said, she was having sex with Bauer, then a minor league pitcher for Cleveland’s Major League Baseball franchise, when she again passed out with his hands around her neck. She said she awoke to a frantic Bauer explaining that she had been convulsing on their hotel room bed.

As their years-long sexual relationship continued, the woman said, they agreed he would stop choking her before she passed out. But he frequently ignored her warnings, she said. He also slapped her without her consent and anally penetrated her while she was unconscious, she said.

In interviews with The Washington Post, the Columbus woman said she decided to share her story after Bauer denied similar allegations made by two other women and accused them of lying for potential financial gain. The Columbus woman asked not to be named, and The Post typically does not name alleged victims of domestic violence unless they ask to be identified.

The Columbus woman shared photos and screenshots of text messages documenting that she had a relationship with Bauer. One screenshot shows a text message bearing Bauer’s name in which he allegedly wrote, “I want to f--- you while you’re completely unconscious.”

MLB suspended Bauer for two years on Friday, the longest suspension in the history of the league’s domestic abuse and sexual assault policy. Bauer immediately proclaimed his innocence and vowed to appeal. MLB cited an “extensive investigation” but did not disclose its findings because of the policy’s terms of confidentiality, and said “it will not issue any further statements.”

The Columbus woman and her lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said she shared her allegations with MLB. She said she is willing to testify in the arbitration hearing that would result from Bauer appealing. MLB declined to comment for this story.

Bauer declined through his attorney and agent, Jon Fetterolf, to be interviewed. A statement issued by Bauer’s representatives did not deny that the Columbus woman had a relationship with Bauer but said the pitcher “unequivocally denies” her “false and defamatory” allegations.

update on Clevinger:

News broke in January that Mike Clevinger was under investigation from the league, as per allegations of domestic violence and child abuse. Major League Baseball announced the results of that investigation today, and Clevinger will not face any suspension or other discipline from the league.

MLB’s statement: “The comprehensive investigation included interviews of more than 15 individuals, in addition to Mr. Clevinger and the complainant, as well as a review of available documents, such as thousands of electronic communication records. The Office of the Commissioner has closed this investigation and, barring the receipt of any new information or evidence, the Office of the Commissioner will not be imposing discipline on Mr. Clevinger in connection with these allegations.

As part of his path forward, Mr. Clevinger has voluntarily agreed to submit to evaluations by the joint treatment boards under the collectively bargained policies, and to comply with any of the boards’ recommendations. MLB will continue to make support services available to Mr. Clevinger, his family, and other individuals involved in the investigation.”

I was reading about Derek Bell today (used him for Toronto/Houston on Immaculate Grid). I think I remember his weird retirement and first drug charge, but I didn't know about his recent troubles:

On April 20, 2006, Bell was charged with felony cocaine possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, after police found a warm crack pipe in the back seat of his car during a traffic stop. He was arrested again on December 2, 2008, facing three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of failure to appear in court on another charge of possession of drug paraphernalia from earlier in the year. Bell was arrested again on November 16, 2022, charged with possessing crack cocaine in Brooksville, Florida.

Sad.

clemenza, Monday, 9 October 2023 19:02 (six months ago) link

Oh that’s a bummer about bell. Had no idea

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 9 October 2023 19:33 (six months ago) link

If you remember, he went over to the Astros and had a couple of 100-RBI seasons (with only around ~20 HR in each). Then the Mets, then the Pirates, then this, at 32:

In spring training 2002, Bell learned that he would have to compete for the Pirates' starting right field job. Despite his poor 2001 season (and the fact he was hitting just .148 that spring), Bell did not feel that he needed to prove he was worthy of being a starter.

On March 18, Bell told reporters:

Nobody told me I was in competition. If there is competition, somebody better let me know. If there is competition, they better eliminate me out of the race and go ahead and do what they're going to do with me. I ain't never hit in spring training and I never will. If it ain't settled with me out there, then they can trade me. I ain't going out there to hurt myself in spring training battling for a job. If it is [a competition], then I'm going into 'Operation Shutdown.' Tell them exactly what I said. I haven't competed for a job since 1991.

Bell left the team on March 29, was released two days later, and never played pro baseball again. Still on the hook for Bell's guaranteed two-year, ten-million dollar contract, the Pirates paid him his $4.5 million though he did not play for them. Bell moved onto his yacht, Bell 14 (his name and uniform number), a 58-foot (18 m) Sea Ray 580. New York Post writer Tom Keegan described the incident by calling Bell "the perfect Pirate given that he lives on a boat and steals money."
