Let's ask the HERO'S WIDOW if Utd should play in the Cup.

ă‚Șニヱ (onimo), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:09 (three years ago) link

it's so staggering you think it has to be a fake but i'm guessing it's not a fake

no ifs, no buts, no scampo nation (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:11 (three years ago) link

crying out for a poll of the interviewees

scampo, foggy and clegg (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:13 (three years ago) link

At that point THE FILM STAR had played 500 football matches and acted in 1 film.

ă‚Șニヱ (onimo), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:13 (three years ago) link

even Barry Norman getting in there! I can remember that mirror cover it's 100% real and my late father-in-law saying it's a bloody disgrace, best cup competition in the world etc...

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:14 (three years ago) link

hi Lisa Potts sorry you were severely injured during a terrifying machete attack what do you think about United pulling out of the FA Cup tho?

no ifs, no buts, no scampo nation (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:15 (three years ago) link

Yep, I remember it at the time. I wonder how many of their phones Morgan was hacking.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:17 (three years ago) link

as a lottery winner, i think it's a bleedin' disgrace

scampo, foggy and clegg (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:25 (three years ago) link

yeah I think questions need to be asked wtf you'd be asking the widow of a headmaster that got stabbed to death outside his school to comment an FA cup controversy, it's bizarre really.

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:41 (three years ago) link

they were obv all on a lot of different drugs back then.

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:47 (three years ago) link

that page represents some kind of moment in the tabloids's imperial era, a moments where all of the stylistic tics and voice of the people shtick curdle into this gross, decadent, debauched rongness that later generations can only look back on and gasp/gag

no ifs, no buts, no scampo nation (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:50 (three years ago) link

how many people looked that over and didn't think twice about whether victims of horrible violence were celebrities who should be approached and front-paged for their views on a football competition?

no ifs, no buts, no scampo nation (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:54 (three years ago) link

the worst thing was they were good victims, not bad victims.

Just paraphrasing Brass Eye, not being a sicko ftr!

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 16:14 (three years ago) link

despite watching Brass Eye a couple of years before that cover and seeing myself as someone who was aware of how terrible the UK press was. I remember thinking it was quite "normal" at the time, or at least just more being annoyed that it was more Man Utd bullshit rather than the absolutely horrid practises of the UK tabloids utilised in it.

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 16:30 (three years ago) link

well i meant the people at the Mirror who had sight of it before publication but you're probably right calz, at the time, in a different context, it was probably less jaw-droppingly bad. but that's because it was standard operating procedure for the time i guess

no ifs, no buts, no scampo nation (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 16:32 (three years ago) link

Wait, do you lot not find out what Lottery Winner Mark Gardiner thinks about something before you form an opinion?

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 16:36 (three years ago) link

nowadays i just watch any BBC news show and within 10 minutes they'll have asked the audience to let us know what they think, so i get as many totally unqualified opinions about complicated subjects as i need

The decline of the ‘tragic mum / wife / dad’ as a unifying hero figure for the press is kind of interesting.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

i guess a few Karen Matthewses put the kibosh on that eventually

no ifs, no buts, no scampo nation (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 16:47 (three years ago) link

at least she put Dewsbury on the map, for some reason we still don't have a tourist information office.

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 17:05 (three years ago) link

lol ITV filmed that drama about her entirely in Halifax

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

I think that's part of it but there's a lot going on. People like Frances Lawrence and Paul Betts (though wildly different) were tapped for quotes on all sorts of things for years in a way that sort of positioned them as an avatar for the reader - the normal, sensible person who just happened to have been elevated to prominence by tragedy, which i guess you don't need as much when the readers can speak for themselves. You also had situations like the McCanns where Paper B, C and D got annoyed they were too close to Paper A and worked out there was just as much mileage in hating them as sympathising.

The capacity for a single horrific thing to capture the news cycle / public imagination for weeks at a time has probably diminished too.

Between her and the McCannses and the noughties rise in the popularity of crime fiction, all tragic/grieving relatives are treated with a dose of sceptical side eye these days.

calzino, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 23:58 (three years ago) link

there was briefly some interaction between the McCannses industrial military complex and team Karen Matthews, would love to hear the gritty Dewsbury-noir dialogue that went on there that caused the conference to break down!

Maguire had been photographed and filmed throughout the day and evening, enjoying the company of his teammates Marcus Rashford and Brandon Williams, as well as the snooker player Judd Trump, and mixing with other tourists, appearing to drink alcohol on occasions.

The Bill Oddie thing was that early humour website called b3ta (was it?) and they had a clip of Madonna's Erotica with the words "Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, rub your hands all over my body" instead of "Erotic, Erotic (same)". There was something to do with Alf Garnet and Independent Woman, as well but it's not coming back to me.

Gerneten-flĂŒken cake (jed_), Monday, 31 August 2020 17:45 (three years ago) link

Oh I remembered it as I hit submit. It was

Shoes on my feet
Alf Garnet
Clothes I'm wearing
Alf Garnet
Rock I'm rocking
Alf Garnet
etc.

A row broke out in an online public meeting when a councillor turned up wearing a large pair of sunglasses. Independent Stephen Aylen said he was sporting the distinctive eyewear to stop screen glare during Thursday's Southend Borough Council meeting.

Mayor John Lamb said although councillors logged on from home, wearing sunglasses was like drinking or smoking, and was disrespectful.
