been a disappointingly variable summer here. in the 30s for a few days but dreich and rainy and not that hot a lot of the time. hate it.

commiserations for people who live places that are routinely "too hot" mind you

I've only been in 40+ degree heat maybe once or twice in my life and it's fucking horrendous.

35+ and humid is also rough as fuck.

anything under that = give it to me please

Some of us are genetically not equipped for heat.

Ty very kindly.

Sorry to hear that, Dee. I forget where in TX you are, the dry bit or the muggy bit?

It's the "not quite as muggy as Houston but definitely not the arid western half of the state" part of the state. "Humid subtropical", according to Wikipedia. "Featuring very hot, long, and humid summers," as well. Next summer I'm just going to say "fuck it" to being environmentally conscious and am just going to run the fucking air conditioner lest I risk a heat stroke.

It's tantalising watching the lightning maps website in central London...It's reached Uxbridge, after dallying on the outskirts.

Today was great if you were outside though... I spent the afternoon in Hyde Park where it looks really wild in parts and the brief heavyish rain was wonderful; and the evening in Kennington Park (most improved park I know of this year)

xxxp That's what I thought. Less humid than, say, Houston but lil more humid than here in AZ with about the same temp currently. Really hoping this is the last stretch of blistering heat in the southwest, for her sake.
I'm somehow nearly immune to the heat, and in particular, the sun. Whereas one of my sisters and my mom cannot take it. My sister doesn't just get sunburned easily but sun poisoned. Just another thing to make me atheist: what deity would put that fucking thing up there?? Surely there must be a better way! /infomercial voice

It's 39/102 here and I'm about to go for a hike. At least there's some clouds to block the sun today, and sun will be behind the mountains after an hour or so of hiking.

Hol' up, since when have you not lived in Chicago?! Also, my late mom and I used to ridicule white people all the time for being the crazy people who were out and about in the middle of a summer's day when normal people are shrinking away from the heat. I've been trying all summer long to brave the heat and be environmentally responsible and just rely on fans to keep cool, but fans don't do shit when the air they're circulating is like an oven's.

We Live as We Dee, Alone (deethelurker), Thursday, 13 August 2020 22:50 (three years ago) link

Moved to AZ end of 2012!
I commend you for trying to limit your use of AC. I try too. I don't use it in my car unless it's above 100F. My home thermostat is set to 81. But if you're having legit health problems from the heat, you gotta crank it.

Confirmed this tornado warning is for radar detecting a possible fire tornado in the wildfire.

This is the first Fire Tornado Warning we are aware of in history. #cawx pic.twitter.com/aTLMuXccA0

Death Valley soared to an incredible 130ºF today. If confirmed, it would be the world’s highest temperature officially recorded since 1931 🔥https://t.co/v8sn9fzd8m

— Jon Passantino (@passantino) August 17, 2020

The only two higher temperatures ever recorded on Earth were in Death Valley (1913) and Tunisia (1931), but both records have been in some dispute. At 130º today in California, we very well may have officially recorded the world’s hottest temp.

Update: I had to go to the hospital late Friday afternoon/early evening because of coming uncomfortably close to heat stroke. I had thought it was the first time I'd ever fainted but then I remembered a time before one of my surgeries when I had been so nervous prior to surgery that I ended up fainting while the surgeon was doing his prep work on me. Anyway, thank goodness someone was at my property at the time and was able to call EMS and get me transported to a hospital, where I stayed overnight to get rehydrated via IV drip and have a couple of medications administered to me, and I spent money on a cheap motel room until this morning to avoid the excessive heat we experienced over the weekend. It's no 130ºF but even 103 - 104ºF can be horrible in a house without (what turned out to be non-working) air conditioning, and I'm hoping on getting this issue resolved this week. At least it's only supposed to go up to 100ºF today. I'll be miserable but I'll survive.

something like 110 or some bullshit out in the disgusting east county San Diego backcountry where my parents live. my mom texted me this afternoon "My neighbor’s daughter lives in Crest; has an 8 year old son (wasn’t worried). Her view last night. Sycuan Casino lights are bright" with this accompanying photo that I believe qualifies as "Cursed"

the late great, Monday, 7 September 2020 01:01 (three years ago) link

this is from Crest, just north of where da folx are by the Sycuan golf course, which is like 3 miles from the Sycuan casino, which is 3 miles from where the fire is in Lawson Valley, which is like 3 miles south of Alpine. I like the area way more in February than I do in September!

ah never heard of it. san diego county is a bigass place. been here 43 years and still learning new spots.

the late great, Monday, 7 September 2020 01:13 (three years ago) link

yup it is and I hear ya, in fact it wasn't until 4th of July this year that I learned about a really cool relatively unknown swimming spot (way less frequented than Three Sisters or Devil's Punchbowl) where the Sweetwater River flows thru Horsethief Canyon, which just happens to be a few thousand feet from where that giant fire is in that photo
