in a recent mail order i threw in Toshifumi Hinata's Broken Belief on a whim, based on a few quick listening samples.

it's a collection of his music from 1985-1987, a lot of simple piano/melody lines, warm pads, and samples.

to put it another way: it is somewhere in a space between angelo badalamenti and ryuichi sakamoto

forgot to say the most important thing: i love it! it was kind of a grower, but it has come to be daily listening while i work

This thread has opened up a whole bunch of stuff for me in the last six months or so. I think it'll be my abiding lockdown music (from memory).

That Hinata album is lovely. My latest find has been Masahiro Sugaya's Horizon compilation from last year. It's mainly piano-based but has that lovely 'woody' thing going on. I can't get enough.

VA - Virtual Dreams: Ambient Explorations In The House & Techno Age, 1993-1997 (3xLP/2xCD) is the first in a series of compilations, as well as more in depth artist-focused releases, which will delve into music produced during the 1990’s that redefined the boundaries of ‘Ambient’. This was music that explored the concept of Ambient within a new setting, created often by House & Techno music producers for a world beyond dance floors but made very much with the pre and post-clubbing listener in mind.

Returning to our own first discoveries of Ambient music in the 90s we’ve been revisiting some personal favourites as well as rediscovering amazing music from a youth spent watching Chill-out videos on VHS, staying up all night to watch MTV’s Chill Out Zone as well as some of our earliest dabbles in local record stores.

From Ambient and Chill-out classics, to lesser known one-off projects, as well as Ambient deviations by some of the House and Techno’s leading producers, volume one of Virtual Dreams features tracks by Bedouin Ascent, LA Synthesis, LFO, Marc Hollander, Mark Pritchard & Kirsty Hawkshaw, Richard H. Kirk and more.

Psyched for this. Tracklisting looks great except for the Primitive Painter track. I just can't get past that Voodoo Ray sample they used lol. Anyway, props to Jamie Tiller for putting this together.

Hazy memory but I think I have APL - The Calling on one of the Ambient Dub comps though I think it might be a different mix? That guy's two tracks on that are an absolute highlight for me though iirc. Stoked for this comp if everything is of that standard.

BTW if anyone is buying anything from Juno in the near future, do yourself a favour and stick a copy of the Javier Bergia comp CD in your basket cos they're selling it for 99p at the moment. Very MFM adjacent - he was a member of Finas Africae, so if you know them, you'll know to expect top stuff

The Virtual Dreams: Ambient Explorations in the House & Techno Age 1993-1997 is out (and on Spotify if that's your thing). It's good! Tuomas mentioned on another thread that it's kind of what you'd expect really but that's more than fine.

Looks like the physical version got pushed back to February, but I've been looking forward to this one. The Pulusha and Space Time Continuum tracks alone are worth the price.
