@BrianTRobb
Bubble Jayson Tatum looks pretty similar to that guy we saw in February since his nightmare outing against Bucks:
25.3 ppg,
53.7% FG
48.9% 3pt (7.5 attempts/G)
87.5% FT (5.3 attempts/G)

The Celtics will now receive the 14th pick of the 2020 draft from the Memphis Grizzlies, unless the 2.4% chance of the Grizzlies winning a top-4 pick in the lottery occurs. Then the pick would roll over to being officially conveyed next year.

the coveted "Lottery Pick"

big time lottery baby

wow, i now have to be thankful to coach k for something? damn.

haha. the thing that surprised me in that story, though, is the implication that when they swapped picks w/the sixers, exactly three days before the draft, the celtics still hadn't made up their mind about tatum.

fact checking cuz, Sunday, 16 August 2020 19:21 (three years ago) link

I didn’t assume that, sounds like he had already worked out for them so it might’ve just been to check off a few final boxes or something. Obv the decision to draft Tatum paid off, but even with hindsight I still mostly read that trade as Ainge being on some clairvoyant shit about Fultz

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 16 August 2020 20:25 (three years ago) link

I.e. they may not have decided fully on Tatum but had decided they wanted to trade the pick. I do remember a lot of the buzz in those few days after the pick was traded was about them taking Josh Jackson lol. Glad things didn’t go that way!

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 16 August 2020 20:29 (three years ago) link

yeah, i got curious about this so i'm reading some contemporary accounts, and the party line out of the celtics was that they didn't see much difference between fultz, ball, tatum, and jackson as far as draft board rankings go. seems like they were comfortable deciding between tatum and jackson following the trade.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 16 August 2020 20:38 (three years ago) link

thank u to jayson tatum for going to that workout lol

lag∞n, Sunday, 16 August 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link

jackson would have had a better chance of developing in boston than he did in phoenix but yeah all the red flags about him (couldn't shoot, attitude probs, good athlete not great athlete) turned out to be true.

Can the Celtics take advantage of Toronto’s half-court offense?
Even when Kyle Lowry (sprained ankle) is right, the Raptors can have issues scoring. They finished the regular season 13th in offensive efficiency. In the half court they were even worse, ranking 16th overall, according to Cleaning the Glass. To their credit, they play like they know their limitations well. They forced more turnovers than any other playoff qualifier. They lived in transition throughout the regular season. They’re a smart, deep bunch.

Over four regular-season games, the Celtics defense held Toronto to 102.9 points per 100 possessions — a mark that would have ranked dead last in the league over the full season. Patrick McCaw started two of those games, so it wasn’t like the Raptors were always at full strength. Still, it’s fair to wonder where their points will come from when the games slow down. Pascal Siakam has been inefficient in the bubble; he has barely cracked the 50 percent true shooting mark over Toronto’s 11 games in Orlando. The Raptors need him to be able to create shots, especially late in games. For all the talk about the minimal offense of Hayward’s replacements, the Celtics still have no shortage of wings who can guard. That should be the most entertaining part of this series: Each side is loaded with tough, athletic perimeter players. Buckets won’t come easy.

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 August 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

today is the day the boston celtics fight their #1 enemies the raptors

lag∞n, Sunday, 30 August 2020 13:20 (three years ago) link

celtics have played the raptors twice in the bubble and are +40, torontos only two losses

lag∞n, Sunday, 30 August 2020 20:18 (three years ago) link

seems like a good matchup honestly. who on the raptors is supposed to be a problem for the celtics?

ciderpress, Sunday, 30 August 2020 20:53 (three years ago) link

siakam but u know...

methinks dababy doth bop shit too much (m bison), Sunday, 30 August 2020 21:01 (three years ago) link

xp that's the conclusion i reached as i thought about this series. if anyone on the raps gets hot the celtics have 2 or 3 guys they can try to slow that person down.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 30 August 2020 22:07 (three years ago) link

raps have some regular season team qualities

lag∞n, Sunday, 30 August 2020 22:21 (three years ago) link

they really need to be scrambling flying around on d but its tough cause the celtics have guys who can make plays

lag∞n, Sunday, 30 August 2020 22:23 (three years ago) link

celtics had a ton of turnovers today which was supposed to be A KEY for the raps but they didnt capitalize

lag∞n, Sunday, 30 August 2020 22:25 (three years ago) link

if they're not getting transition points off of the turnovers it's much less of a problem (they did not get any transition points).

lots of experts saying the raps are a better team even if this is a bad matchup and i'm not even sure i see that. the celtics were 4th in both defense and offense. the raps were 2nd in defense and.....13th in offense.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 30 August 2020 22:30 (three years ago) link

raps could really uses some sort of big unstoppable #1 scorer haha

lag∞n, Sunday, 30 August 2020 22:48 (three years ago) link

nice piece on kemba's defense. the stats from this game are an outlier but he's been very, very good so far in the offs and doesn't deserve to be lumped in with other small offensive guards

Raptors when Kemba Walker was primary defender in Game 1, per NBA tracking data: 2-12 FG, 0-5 3PT, 4 PTS

An ode to Kemba's playoff defense (especially when he's taking painful charges like this 📼⤵️)
