Things that are responsible for the recession: Black Lives Matter, teaching unions, BAME families, people who won't go out, people who go out, Corbyn, the PRC, fast fashion

Things that aren't responsible for the recession: the government, employers

How will this all affect housing is the question..

Also responsible: 60,000 people who probably would have died anyway so why did we even bother

Not to worry Brexit will sort everything

If there's one party I trust to create millions of quality jobs it's oh bollocks

We know a lot of this already (it's not written for a UK audience) but what's surprising even now is quite how many people in direct proximity to the government think they are falling badly, and also how many people think the current structure of the British state is basically set up for failure on moments like this.

Sunak definitely needs to work on curbing his twinkly grin when delivering the news that, yes indeed, lol we're all going to die.

I quite like it, gives you a grisly faceapp quality to the news

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Wednesday, 12 August 2020 12:34 (three years ago) link

Is it more of a "I'm here to make your death as comfortable as possible" twinkly grin or more of an "oh, have we had a little accident again?" twinkly grin?

Britain’s leaders asked their people to do three things, captured in one pithy slogan: “Stay home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.”

that's one thing ffs

consumer-facing service sector is now 80% of economy per FT, which goes on to quote

“We expect pent-up consumer demand to drive a strong recovery in the third quarter, although this momentum will gradually fade as the outlook for the labour market deteriorates"
I think that's economist-speak for lol we're all going to die next year but at least we will have one last shop beforehand

BREAKING: @scotgov has announced its commitment to extending the protections against eviction until March 2021.

This helps thousands hit hard by the pandemic to keep a roof over their heads.

This is a big win for our supporters and us.

Truss is back on her cheese game, when you are barely even in the league one of European cheese producers it probably isn't best to draw too much attention to a national product that might be ok, but due to lack of demand you can only really export in micro quantities.

calzino, Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:30 (three years ago) link

it's a crackers strategy

As someone who loves British cheese and always looks for it when they are abroad and has spent 15 years living in different countries around Europe and Asia, I have to report that we apparently do not export any cheese at all.

Cheddar is almost never not dull and Stinking Bishop is rubbish. The UK does some brilliant goats cheeses but plenty of the bigger names just can't measure up to Europe's

imago, Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:39 (three years ago) link

I've got no prob with UK cheese, just saying the global demand for it is relatively miniscule.

calzino, Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:39 (three years ago) link

Stilton is unfuckwithable though yeah, liz truss otm lol

imago, Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:40 (three years ago) link

The UK cheese deficit is in the region of 40,000 tonnes per month.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:40 (three years ago) link

Some of you are apparently more acquainted with crack than cheese

The Scampos of Young Werther (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:40 (three years ago) link

Whereas I suspect if you look at France they are exporting millions of tonnes of cheese a month and would look at you with baffled disgust if you mentioned that other countries make it at all.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:41 (three years ago) link

My local supermarket in Paris, in a quite untouristy part of the city, carries Wyke Farms cheddar, in slices, blocks, and shredded as well. I have no idea if that's a "good" cheddar but you do export some cheese

(I think British cheese is generally excellent fwiw)

Joey Corona (Euler), Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:42 (three years ago) link

Pathetic stuff.

Sir Steve House said officers could not have known Butler and the driver of the BMW car were black before they stopped it, because the windows were tinted.

“Criminals often use vehicles to travel in and to commit crime, therefore officers will often check cars to see if there is anything that requires them to stop it and do further checks.”

House continued: “The officers ran a number plate check on the vehicle. At this stage, the officers still didn’t know who the occupants of the car were, including their ethnicity because the car windows were tinted.

Tinted front windscreen was it?

Stinking Bishop just doesn't stink. It's such a bland, mild disappointment. And there's France mass-producing Vacherin and Epoisses like it's nbd

imago, Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link

The Scampos of Young Werther (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 12 August 2020 15:47 (three years ago) link
