Bike Lanes, C/D?

If in doubt, act like a car. You are a road user and have the right to take up the space you need. For intersections, if you're going straight, don't pass on the right, but don't let yourself be passed on the left - position yourself in the middle of the road (ie outside of the bike lane if there is one). If vehicles are stopped in the road, pass them on the left like any other (motor) vehicle would.

And if people get antsy at you, remember to yell "share the road!"

Love launching a barrage of self-righteous indignant rage at a pedestrian that steps into a cycle lane without looking. Generally they just stare back, stunned, praying this lunatic will pedal off soon.

God they are so annoying.

it doesn't stop you from being the one that ends up dead if you are a moron that drives a bike on busy narrow streets.

^ has never ridden a bike, run, jogged, walked, or spent any significant time outside of his house or car.

I am so glad I stopped reading slashdot all those years ago, what a bunch of morons.

three months pass...

dudes!
the other day i was riding along in the bike lane minding my own business when up ahead i see a couple guys standing pretty much in the bike lane. no probs cuz they wasn't no cars so i gives em a little room and one of the guys sorta non-chalantly takes a few steps positioning himself so that as i pass he could take a swing at me. i was sorta shocked but sorta not, as i could see this developing as i approached and successfully blocked the kids punch with my hand, although he kinda jammed my middle finger which i showed him enthusiastically directly after this happened. has anything like this ever happened to anyone else?

west warren ave, a few blocks west of western, heading east at about 15 mph

interestingly this has happened to other guys too

graaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave architecture (jdchurchill), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, seems to happen in most cities. most of the ones i've read about have been hitting people with objects though. like pipes or boards.

harbl, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 22:18 (fourteen years ago) link

that is not the awesomest place to ride a bike IMO jd

how rad bandit (gbx), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 22:57 (fourteen years ago) link

xp
gbx-
yea i know that in general the west side is shite for staying "safe" but i had to pass through there, and i had never taken that route before. truth be told those jokers were the only people i saw on warren. but just out of curiosity, gbx: where is the awesomest place to ride a bike?

graaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave architecture (jdchurchill), Thursday, 29 October 2009 22:41 (fourteen years ago) link

This is classic angry cyclist behaviour, as if it's up to the cycling fraternity to forcibly educate the motoring public and instil fear like jackbooted Soviets.

How aggressive do you have to be at 5am, anyway? You never hear of rowers, joggers, swimmers, yoga artists or other dawn fitness devotees attacking people.

fuck this cunt, i hope she gets u-locked

how rad bandit (gbx), Thursday, 29 October 2009 22:44 (fourteen years ago) link

jd---whatever you do, do not go for a bike ride on the LFP, it is the worst (though it's probably better now that the weather's gone to hell)

MKE Ave is a junkshow once the weather gets nice, but it's reliable in the shitty months

downtown is safer than you think

how rad bandit (gbx), Thursday, 29 October 2009 22:46 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean my strategy for staying safe in chicago (...from pedestrians) was just go fast all the time

on those occasions that i went through the west side, i just pinned it, usually, and hoped that my tires were equal to the amount of glass on the street

it's actually the only place i've ever gotten aggro from the corner, w/dudes like straight telling me that i ought not to have come this way, and that maybe i made a bad life-choice by taking my bike via pulaski and chicago

how rad bandit (gbx), Thursday, 29 October 2009 22:50 (fourteen years ago) link

ok i feels dum:
wut is "LFP" and "MKE"
also (about tires and glass) i got so many fucking flats last fall i bit the bullet and got those bullet proof tires and i haven't had a flat since

jØrdån (omar little), Friday, 30 October 2009 00:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Lake Front Path is basically a gauntlet of pedestrians where more than once per day a mother will seemingly throw a stroller, with a child in it, right in front of you.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Friday, 30 October 2009 00:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Two rollerbladers, holding hands, will get closer, put there heads down, and speed straight towards you.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Friday, 30 October 2009 00:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Tall, lanky, injured old men will lay down across the path when they see you coming, daring you to run them over.

Hyacinth Thrash (bamcquern), Friday, 30 October 2009 01:44 (fourteen years ago) link

oh ok
only times i rode the lake path it was like 3am
and at that time it was nobody but me and the occasional drunk
i think i went really really fast

graaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave architecture (jdchurchill), Friday, 30 October 2009 19:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh yeah LFP at 3am is classic, don't get me wrong.

PS hey ilx urban cyclists, if yr city has light rail/streetcars, pay extra heed to the tracks. Last night I thought I was crossing the track at enough of a diagonal to make it over. I was not (also it was wet), the front wheel got caught in the tracks, and I now have some very lovely bruises and cuts.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Friday, 30 October 2009 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh railroad tracks and grates were drummed into us by Dad from the beginning, esp in the rain. He pretty much made us pass a written exam about possible dangers before we were allowed on the streets. I don't think I cross any, ever, now.

I would feel confident if I dated her because I am older than (Laurel), Friday, 30 October 2009 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

They're everywhere in downtown PDX, and it's always raining, so not crossing isn't really an option. I would have been fine if I'd been at more of an angle.

Gotta stop falling on the same side, though. My poor left leg is just covered in scrapes and bruises as of late.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Friday, 30 October 2009 19:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i always wipe out on the left, it's weird!

how rad bandit (gbx), Friday, 30 October 2009 19:53 (fourteen years ago) link

really?. some edits for brevity-

In Stone’s rebuttal, she laid out an allegory of sorts, re-telling the three Mandeville Canyon incidents the prosecution presented during the trial.

She’s... at Trader Joe’s. Someone, she said, “is in my aisle, blocking me from my granola. So I blast his nose with a baseball bat.”

“But of course, I get arrested.”

Then, donning a white doctor’s coat, she said, “But I shroud myself in this because I want to deflect what I did.”
