he started 2017 strong but nothing like this - 59:23 in his first 83 innings with 11 HR (and that was lucky)
then had a blazing hot start in 2018 closer to this before imploding - 40:9 with a single home run in 32 innings despite playing all games in hitters parks with a high FB%. and then he allowed 12 HR in his next 5 starts.
looking a lot more reasonable this year, just a low BABIP and a high LOB. his homers are probably low but he plays in LAA now.
he's throwing his fourseam 19% less than he did in baltimore. wish someone just told him to give that a try for a few starts when he was here

hold on a second, let me put on my magical thinking hat. ok, now we're good:
What I said on Fox: League working with union on setting full Cardinals schedule. Players want additional doubleheaders to create off-days. League believes STL still could get close to 60 games, and maybe even to 60 by making up doubleheader if necessary day after season ends.— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) August 13, 2020
awesome news! turns out the cardinals will play 60 games this year! also they just put another starting pitcher on the IL for Covid-19, even though he hasn't tested positive yet. looking forward to watching 5 double-headers each week until they all die!

people on an outside cardinals baseball thread are currently fantasizing about going for JD Martinez at the trade deadline because "the team is a game under .500 but only 5.5 games back in the standings."
great idea, deal some prospects for 30 games of JD Martinez during the dumbest baseball season of all time so the cardinals can have a better chance of making it into "who fucking cares" playoffs of 2020

(not just whining because it's the cardinals - this whole season was and is a stupid idea, even if it were just the yankees and astros coming down with covid19)
honestly i'd rather watch a really tacky NFL Combine/workout style series of baseball events, like a combo of HR Derby and mini-games like seeing who can throw from the warning track to home plate most accurately or whatever. most people wouldn't watch and there would be a ton of complaints, but at least it would treat the players and staff as something more than the jocks favorite euphemism for athletes, "physical specimens"

probably doesn't matter if the season's getting cancelled or whatever, but the baseballs they've used this year seem to be less juiced than last year, at least going by league HR/FB. down to '16/'18 levels. they might just be using the '18 batch again like they did in the postseason last year.
maybe a small sample size so far but considering 1. games are starting in the middle of july when home runs should be peaking, none of that cold april weather lowering the number 2. NL adding the DH should hypothetically make a small difference at least
this is the only thing i care about anymore

Jeff Passan of ESPN writes that Mike Clevinger would fall one day short of reaching four years of service time in the Indians keep him optioned at their alternate training site for 20 days. This would delay his free agency by one year. It would be a quite the punishment for Clevinger, who initially misled his teammates about going out in Chicago on August 7. He actually boarded the team plane before the truth emerged. The Indians sit at 13-9 on the year, one game behind the Twins for first place in the AL Central. With expanded playoffs and the quality starting pitching they have, there's a real chance they could make a run this year. However, it's hard to imagine them getting there without Clevinger. It's going to be fascinating to see how this plays out and if this situation is even salvageable. Stay tuned.

jim edmonds has no idea what the word "leverage" means, dislikes the term "high leverage", thinks it should be "high stress" situation instead for relievers. mentions that "leverage" doesn't make sense, "unless you're talking about sticking a piece of wood in a crack to lift up something", then says "just saying" after 5 seconds of dead air time

huh, I used their "Clutch" metric:
https://library.fangraphs.com/misc/clutch/
Clutch measures how well a player performed in high leverage situations. It’s calculated as such:Clutch = (WPA / pLI) – WPA/LIIn the words of David Appelman, this calculation measures, “…how much better or worse a player does in high leverage situations than he would have done in a context neutral environment.” It also compares a player against himself, so a player who hits .300 in high leverage situations when he’s an overall .300 hitter is not considered clutch.

i'm not super-familiar with the clutch metric, but i think an overall career score close to zero is actually pretty good. it's an index, i think, with 0 set as the baseline. a score close to zero means that they performed just as well in high-leverage situations as they did in medium and low-leverage situations. and if they performed pretty well overall (like edmonds), that also means they performed pretty well in high leverage situations.
or at least, that's how i understand it
― The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 04:52 (three years ago) link
or really, i guess this explains the same thing, more concisely:
"It also compares a player against himself, so a player who hits .300 in high leverage situations when he’s an overall .300 hitter is not considered clutch."
