That wonderful Marti Caine track (comp/prod Barry Blue) first re-emerged in 2018 in a Velvet Season & The Heart Of Gold 12” re-edit - it was a big seller for several months.

Bill Brewster comped it in 2013.

love that. had no idea who she was, wouldn’t have guessed she was british.

Kind of bizarre to see Marti Caine's name popping up. She was mostly a comedian, I think? Basically a *Northern Variety performer - sang, told jokes, danced, did a bit of everything.

(*Northern variety - a cabaret circuit in the North of England, working men's clubs, local theatres, seaside resorts etc)

South African space disco from 1977. Clearly heard ‘Love to Love You Baby’ and thought is that as far as she can go.

Yea, he's championed it for years and it was the opening track on his 2013 Late Night Tales selection

Kind of bizarre to see Marti Caine's name popping up. She was mostly a comedian, I think? Basically a *Northern Variety performer - sang, told jokes, danced, did a bit of everything.

The album that song is from has been super-collectible for a long time now. Came out on the BBC's own label, and I think the only people who bought it at the time were exactly the sort of people who bought BBC records - basically her light entertainment fanbase. And those people might have been a bit shocked to find her branching out and exploring that sort of subtle, sexy disco vibe so it pretty much died a death. But it's been a good one to look out for at carboots and charity shops because if you find it at all, it'll most likely be among a pile of Lena Zavaroni and Don Estelle records and yucky old trash like that. Sadly never turned up a copy myself, but I do know people that have found it in exactly those circumstances. Got reissued last year, but was an easy hundred quidder at one point.

This is what you're looking out for anyway:

Quite taken by this very Chic-like tune at the moment - think they were Italian, same people who did the Electric Mind records:

I just discovered this song. Not a deep cut or anything, just something new to me. It's now my favorite ever. The melancholy bridge. Great video too. There's an extended frankie knuckles edit on youtube.

Patrick Cowley's low-budget-sounding instrumental version of "I Feel Love" seems as much organ as synth, anyway thee former stands out, in a soulful way, highlighting latent Latinate tints of original, and might even be a Farfisa, of 60s Top Forty fame, kind of a Paradise Garage punk effect---on Some Funkettes EP of prev. unreleased 70s tracks, and seems like the sassy finale, "Spiked Punch Dub," is also thread-relevant (as is whole thing, prob., but these two jumped on me right away, and stayed here). See what you think:

Valle is an all-timer, from his bossa stuff through the high concept 70's stuff to the boogie era. Saw him live at a Jazz club in London playing with Azymuth and it was one of the greatest concert experiences I've ever had. By the end of it everyone got off the tables and started dancing around despite the lack of space.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 29 October 2020 09:54 (three years ago) link

ten months pass...

So now that mainstream ILM has expressed its undying love for Van Halen and Cyndi Lauper in the Best Songs of the 80s thread, I’d be interested in seeing some lists of POV or POX for specific subgenres, like top five boogie songs from 80s, top five Italo disco cuts, or your top ten post-disco jams.

Feels like if it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well so I should put in some effort if I’m going to make a list, and not just post the first five songs that pop into my head.

Any interest here?

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 27 September 2021 14:19 (two years ago) link

POX/POV stands for... pick only 10 / pick only 5? i could go for that

davey, Sunday, 3 October 2021 11:33 (two years ago) link

Actually:

80s Italo Disco POX

And a major poll:

La musica si muove appena: The ILM ITALO Poll (Results Thread)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 3 October 2021 13:03 (two years ago) link

Moka I respect your intent but this is basically how most attempts to initiate non-popist discussion on ILM die now.

Anyway I’m still not sure when peak boogie was (was it actually the 70s?), I should probably look into that.

Meanwhile research for italo would involve me checking into Reddit, our sub had quite a good run of italo for a while which I should review for the sake of completeness, but I’ve been avoiding Reddit for almost all of this year and given the way things were going last time I checked, I have some anxiety that the admins there have already taken the sub from me and handed it over to the white supremacists or whatever. TMI I know but the tl:dr is that I’m not ready to face the wall of Reddit bullshit to look into italo yet.

Hence I will work on my list of top five post-disco tracks. Would it cause great offense if I tried to pass some new wave off as post-disco?

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 3 October 2021 17:00 (two years ago) link

Not like there was tremendous interest to begin with although I do greatly appreciate Davey’s input. Still I probably should have just kept my crappy bickering over tactics to myself, soz.
