“Stare” one of those all-purpose verbs that does a lot of work

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 14:41 (three years ago) link

BTW, today will be my 1000th day of my current Duolingo streak. Although I did have to use a streak freeze every once in a while along the way, such as last week.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 14:43 (three years ago) link

Yeah, that lesson is a drag, at least for getting things right without having to learn special expressions.

I'm not having too much trouble yet with da/di, but that may be luck.

yesterday

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 15:18 (three years ago) link

Hm, no obvious crazies in my cohort this week.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 16:31 (three years ago) link

Here’s another another expression from the lesson that will mess you up: non vedere l’ora.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 16:39 (three years ago) link

Not sure if it's overkill but maybe we could start a separate thread for that project.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 16:48 (three years ago) link

for which project? just learning italian? this thread isn't particularly active, I think it can stay here, but I dunno

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 3 August 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

Yeah, learning or improving Italian. Probably best to keep it here as you say.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 17:20 (three years ago) link

Just noticed that the reverve tree, from Italian to French, recently got an upgrade.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 17:20 (three years ago) link

Some new lessons maybe but hardly any tips or notes it seems.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 17:35 (three years ago) link

I don't ever read the tips or notes, if I don't just absorb the grammar from playing then I'd rather work through a more structured text. I choose duolingo for the former.

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 3 August 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

I used to do the same, but at some point started forcing myself to read them more often. I also almost always click through the speech bubble to read any discussion or get any extra audio.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

So what does don't green the time mean? Don't waste it?

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 3 August 2020 18:50 (three years ago) link

Duolingo left me pretty bewildered by prepositions but then I got to them in buusu and they make total sense

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 3 August 2020 18:51 (three years ago) link

I feel like I'm mocking an Italian accent by bouncing on the double vowels, but that's just how you gotta do them huh

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 3 August 2020 18:52 (three years ago) link

It's "vedere" not "verdere."

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 19:04 (three years ago) link

This is kind of hard and not a lot of fun. Going back to my other languages.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 August 2020 19:33 (three years ago) link

Started the Spanish a little over a week ago and loving it. Like others have said, I'm a little surprised that the gamification aspect apparently works so well on me.

It's stupid, but in the set 6 story "Need Help?", the way the narrator says "Nnnnecesita...ayuda!?" cracks me up every time.

Dan I., Tuesday, 4 August 2020 14:40 (three years ago) link

I only just started German a few weeks ago, but I feel like I'm taking to it faster than any other language I've ever tried. It's really fun.

jmm, Tuesday, 4 August 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

wow, they just updated the french->italian course, and most of my "progress" is erased? I don't care, it's not like "finishing" the older course would have signified anything in particular re. competence in the language, but it's still striking. at least the undone levels are easy again!

Joey Corona (Euler), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 16:56 (three years ago) link

Oh, yeah, it's all gone purple

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 17:29 (three years ago) link

But on the other hand I am much further along in the tree.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 18:20 (three years ago) link

same here. & I don't mind doing easy things, to boost my basics. & the lessons are different now, for instance I don't remember "pronto" being introduced in the old lessons but now it's in like basics 1.

Joey Corona (Euler), Thursday, 6 August 2020 11:46 (three years ago) link

Had that a few times in my Spanish tree and I'm always glad now, as it means more content, so I can keep going ad infinitum!

come to the german thread !

The German language

||||||||, Friday, 7 August 2020 09:22 (three years ago) link

I'm going to reset my german this week/next - might lace in some duolingo work as a novelty

||||||||, Friday, 7 August 2020 09:23 (three years ago) link

I was going to reset my Italian through French tree and then try to place out of all the purple but then I just went to the last castle instead.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 August 2020 14:08 (three years ago) link

I'm back grinding the French tree after my lessons finished for the summer. Allez!

Heh

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 11 August 2020 23:32 (three years ago) link

Today I discovered a person who does Duolingo at least twice as much as I do that I know in real life.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 11 August 2020 23:33 (three years ago) link

That’s...probably too much?

Joey Corona (Euler), Tuesday, 11 August 2020 23:40 (three years ago) link

Ha, he admitted as much himself. But he has been quite helpful in assisting me in learning his language, so it has worked out okay for me so far.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 12 August 2020 01:38 (three years ago) link

I see that I have mentioned Babel No More on other threads but not this one, a very interesting book about the possibilities of language learning.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 12 August 2020 23:56 (three years ago) link

How did everybody do this week?

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 17 August 2020 00:45 (three years ago) link

stayed put in diamond, nowhere near the top obviously since I'm never gonna grind like that. just chugging along.

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 17 August 2020 09:24 (three years ago) link

The Hungarian word for fish is great: tintahal.

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 23 August 2020 14:47 (three years ago) link

Squid I mean. Fish is hal.

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 23 August 2020 14:48 (three years ago) link

Spanish course just got updated again.

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 25 August 2020 19:48 (three years ago) link

Don’t see it. Must be in A/B testing.

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 25 August 2020 19:52 (three years ago) link

Yes, it is. https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/41530472

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 25 August 2020 19:59 (three years ago) link

Yep, that's what I've got. Good news for me, as I was getting bored again!

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 25 August 2020 21:05 (three years ago) link

what happened to the Gaelic?

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 25 August 2020 21:22 (three years ago) link

Sadly it fell by the wayside very quickly. I had to admit that I only really have time for one language at the moment.

brain (krakow), Thursday, 27 August 2020 12:29 (three years ago) link

I know how it goes. I can really do maybe two at time and still be learning something, although often I push it well beyond that. Anyway, came to say that today my streak reached 2^10 days of Duolingo.

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 August 2020 12:35 (three years ago) link

Nice.

Makes me realise that I actually passed the 4 year mark yesterday - 1461 days!

brain (krakow), Friday, 28 August 2020 16:12 (three years ago) link

the french tree got redone again

maura, Friday, 11 September 2020 01:15 (three years ago) link

They also pretty radically changed the German course. Completionists are pretty vocally upset on their forums, having to now redo a bunch of early material to get the tree back to gold.

Frobisher, Friday, 11 September 2020 19:25 (three years ago) link

At some point it is a form of torture to go back in fill in all the new purple circles
