Jordan, I really dig your beats!

For my part, I just put a new EP up: https://foundriver.bandcamp.com/album/fr-01. I'm not quite where I want to be with this stuff yet, but it isn't *completely* horrible (I think) and I wanted to put something out there. Be gentle pls.

Dig it. Tho' Azure Cloud is a Microsoft product :)

DJI, Friday, 7 August 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

Thanks zchyrs. Really nice synth stuff on yours. Have you thought about doing any beatless tracks? I don't mean that as a diss, I just think it would sound good.

I set up some drums in my garage attic and practiced on a kit for the first time in years. It's been very frustrating and not especially enjoyable, mostly due to being out of practice + sick of my limitations + having watched too many great drummers on Youtube. Luckily these days you can curate the decent moments:

Thanks, Jordan! Yeah, synth textures are my main focus with this project. I've made some beatless tracks before (like this one: https://soundcloud.com/found-river/sundogs) but I often feel like something is missing from them. I am currently attempting some stuff that skews closer to "pure" ambient, we'll see how that goes.

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Friday, 7 August 2020 22:57 (three years ago) link

i was trying to make a slow hip-hop beat on my sampler but when i recorded it onto my computer, the speed and pitch somehow got doubled and it ended up sounding more footwork-y. i decided to go with it, added back the missing bass and some other stuff. it's still clunky because i don't know what i'm doing yet but i think it's fun: https://soundcloud.com/user-378919876-468565288/porcupine

Working on a lockdown covers EP at the moment, enlisting pals to play what I cannot.

However, I'm about three-quarters of the way into a version of Evil by Red House Painters, now I'm in a moral quandary *sigh*

Maresn3st, Monday, 17 August 2020 19:37 (three years ago) link

NA that bass sounds amazing. My ear wants to hear your guitar phrases fed into the sampler and chopped up like a footwork vocal.

Unearthed a sort of piano rock/AOR demo I recorded a few years ago -- this was in a phase where the kids were very little and it was hard to find time to record, so I had to stick with imperfect takes, also never got the vocals down the way I wanted so it remained instrumental. Still really like parts of it.

thx

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 19:54 (three years ago) link

thanks Jordan. i considered looking for a vocal sample to chop up in that way but thought the song already had enough elements and that maybe i was moving too far into overt footwork style but yeah doing it with the guitar part could be cool.

paolo, Wednesday, 14 October 2020 14:16 (three years ago) link

And while I'm here, anyone got any advice on getting your music out there, ie sending it to labels and DJs etc? I'm sharing my music with my friends but am mainly making it for myself right now, which is a bit boring and lonely. I would like to release tracks at some point but I don't think I'm ready yet.

paolo, Wednesday, 14 October 2020 14:21 (three years ago) link

I have been in touch with one label and someone there said they like my tunes so that's a start

paolo, Wednesday, 14 October 2020 14:22 (three years ago) link

I asked the same question a little while ago here. There was some good advice: what is going on in your musical life

(Nothing has materialized so far for me. I'm probably just going to self-release; thinking of holding it until January since yearly roundup lists seem to start in November these days.)

I guess I'd be lonesome (Sund4r), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 23:01 (three years ago) link

Thanks, and good luck! I guess it would be best to just keep working because even though I feel that my tracks are getting better I don't think I'm at the stage where a label is going to put out my stuff.

Am I correct in thinking that if you're a bedroom producer the normal process is basically to spend years learning how to make tunes by yourself and then you start firing them off to labels and DJs and hope that someone likes them? Because that's been my strategy so far.

paolo, Thursday, 15 October 2020 09:30 (three years ago) link

Thanks Paolo. I'd say yeah, that's pretty much what I did/do. If possible, try to find other producers you like who are working in a similar sphere, and send each other tracks for feedback. Find people doing radio shows you like, keep sending tracks. Same with labels, even if you're not there yet, ime if someone likes one of your tracks or hears potential in it, they'll encourage you to keep sending stuff and eventually develop a release.

Making mixes and putting your tracks alongside released ones can be educational too. Putting aside the fact that they're unmastered, it can provide some lightbulbs about what areas you might want to work on.

I'm not saying I have it all figured out, but these are all things that have been helpful to me in the past.

paolo I'm always in awe of your drum sounds

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 27 October 2020 15:15 (three years ago) link

Thanks! I don't think I'm doing anything particularly original with them, unless I've somehow stumbled across some perfect combination of effects in Ableton. I'm less picky about them than I used to be - obviously there's thousands of drum samples in Ableton and I used to spend ages going through them to get the perfect kick or whatever, now I just listen to a few and go 'eh, that'll do'.
