When I start fantasizing about winning the lottery the main reason is to be able to buy two homes, one in Tampa for the 65 degree F (18 C) winters, and another one in Portland, OR for the 75 degree summers.

I automatically see you as having something wrong with you and needing to seek out professional help. I've already lived a lifetime's worth of heat and sun, as have my antecedents. If I had the ability to live out the rest of my life in a location with a paucity of both and leave places such as the U.S. Sun Belt to those of you lacking sanity, I would.

Here's the shitty thing about a lot places that are cold af in winter, the US Midwest in particular: it also gets uncomfortably warm and muggy in the summer! You spend winter fantasizing about how nice it'll be once it's not freezing, all the stuff you'll be able to do, you get a couple nice weeks of Spring weather, and then the heat, humidity, and bugs descend upon you and you fantasize about the arrival of cool Autumn weather! At least here in AZ I merely have to wait until the sun goes down to get relief.

Been thinking a lot about northern NM for that reason.

The place we recently moved into only comes with a shower, so I can no longer pretend that I'm finally going to pick up my love of baths where I left it off, uh, 25 years ago.

See, I would much rather move further north than that to Canada or England where there isn't quite the issue with regards to sizzling hot summer temperatures. I mean, they still happen, it's just that it lasts for a significantly shorter period of time. But even with that, you all still manage to have all four seasons up in the upper Midwest. Down here where I'm from you get slightly cooler than Hades, fuck me I'm burning alive, it doesn't feel quite like an oven, and a couple of blissful months of actually being able to enjoy hot beverages such as hot chocolate and cider. And seeing as though I have a deep and abiding hatred of the sun and this is the second summer I've gone without using any air conditioning, it's not exactly happy fun times for me. (Also, I too lack a tub. Only shower stalls in the bathrooms at home.)

I am rarely, if ever, cold. I don't know what it feels like to be cold really, not in winter either. There's a sort of dormant heater built inside. Which is nice 3/4's of the year, except in summer. I love a cool shower in summer as much as anyone, except for the getting out part, when the cooling feeling literally evaporates and the sweat breaks out twice as fast.

35-36C twice within a week in London. 4-5 days in a row of 30+ is itself still not all that common here but that's what we're looking at.

But it occurs to me...can my body really tell the difference between 30C and 36C? If I just refuse to acknowledge it's higher than 30 maybe I can cope better.

Really I'm just disappointed (as well as alarmed) that the first times I've experienced heat quite this high (as we did one or two days last year too) is in my home country.

the next day the high here will be under 35C is...next Thursday. utterly disgusting.

I am on frozen water bottle rotation, mist spray bottle in fridge, cold salad for lunch and ice cream later to reward myself for working all day in this hell miasma.

We had a really nice 10-day cool stretch but it's back to the (ab)normal August starting today.

I assume you hell lovers have aircon at home? all I can do is keep the blinds down and the windows closed (even at night it only gets down to 26) & so each day this drags on, it gets hotter inside, with no way to relief, save destroying the planet

No airco here, inside it's up to 28. There's a bit of a breeze though, we've been opening all doors and windows after 22.00 to get some of the heat out. It brought it down to 26 last night.

yeah opening the windows doesn't help when outside it's staying 26+ all night. it's the heat effect of this glorious concrete capital. there was some wind last night with all the convection but during the days, like now, just stillness.

Yeah, and like you said, it's the city that retains the heat. Saw the metéo on F2 last night. Only place of refuge you can go to seems to be Bretagne.

yes, Bretagne is ok, and the southeast isn't that bad, Marseille to Menton. but the major part of the country is just sunk under this humid glove. Even Madrid is doing better.

It's way more common in North America. Ours is a cheap-ish window AC that only covers a single room, nothing fancy.

window ACs literally don't exist in the UK. search amazon uk for "air conditioner" for a good time.

i think there are also UK building regulations that haven't really caught up with global warming that make it particularly tricky to install AC in residential buildings.
