This album is all Crooked Man joints!

Is it all Parrot? Don't get me wrong, I like each of these tracks, to a point, sometimes a high point, but most of them really do drag. Almost every one outstays it's welcome and even though this bpm is *very me* I want them to be zippier. There's a lethargy in them that I find a bit depressing. I'm sure that's a very unpopular opinion on here, though.

It's quite possible that R Machine feels the same way, actually, as she mentioned on something (was it the chat with Jessie Ware?) that the parrot collab was done now.

“Róisín Machine is the culmination of a rich, decades-long partnership between Murphy and one of her most trusted collaborators Crooked Man aka DJ Parrot.”

while I'm c+p'ing, Something More was written by Amy Douglas:

"I asked her to write me a song about never being full or satisfied, exponential need," Murphy says. "She sent a very basic but brilliant demo very soon after, just her singing and playing a piano. The challenge then is to get the music direction right, the arrangement and the voicing."

Murphy described "Something More" as "a swansong to how we once lived, there's plenty of bravado in the lyrics and the character is a kind of antihero but the indefinable yearning and the feeling of arriving at a point of emptiness is universal right now!"

I'm assuming the Amy Douglas who is half of Peach Melba with Juan Maclean

Never Saw It Coming Amy/Parrot joint was probably my tune of 2019. Amazing that she wrote Something More! She's quite the force of nature.

again, for those that haven't heard:

And yes, sic, I know what people write in press releases!

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 31 July 2020 23:32 (three years ago) link

Never Saw It Coming is one of those rare tracks where I/you thought, "oh I haven't heard this track for years"/"oh fuck, this is brand new!" when it came out. I think it was/is a classic straight off the bat. You felt like you knew it as soon as you heard it.

although this is ABSOLUTELY THEE VERSION of Never Saw It Coming:

fkng amazing.

Had never heard that - thanks! (FYI discogs says two remixes by Crooked Man, but the original is written with and produced by a NYC guy)

I guess the press release doesn't say that anyone else didn't produce anything on Machine, but it does seem to intentionally imply that it's all Parrot.

Steppin' RZA (sic), Saturday, 1 August 2020 01:27 (three years ago) link

here's the audio for the full-length Something More btw

Steppin' RZA (sic), Saturday, 1 August 2020 01:29 (three years ago) link

she previously said before the album was announced that it was all produced by him?

ufo, Saturday, 1 August 2020 01:33 (three years ago) link

Very happy to have introduced you to it but amazed as well, sic, wtf?!

I'm gen. amazed!

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:00 (three years ago) link

I'm delighted, tbh.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:06 (three years ago) link

I have played that out in Glasgow and had a room of people singing every word of the track. That probably says a lot about Glasgow and also skews my perception of the general reception of the track.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:15 (three years ago) link

she previously said before the album was announced that it was all produced by him?

The quote in Josh's revive a month ago still only implies it, now I look again. It's a pretty safe bet though!

We can treat that Amy Douglas jam as a sister song to the Roisin album

Steppin' RZA (sic), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:24 (three years ago) link

totally. best sister.

sic, also worth checking out "Walls (Subsidence version)" by crooked man w/ Amy Douglas. I won't embed it, I don't want to turn this into an Amy Douglas thread.

it's all Parrot

Love “Never Saw It Coming”, but prefer the Crooked Man Remix to the Dub.

Tim F, Saturday, 1 August 2020 04:25 (three years ago) link

Amy on writing for Roisin, last October:

I’m starting to write songs for Róisín Murphy. That’s another biggie. I have a very deep and meaningful relationship with Ms. Murphy. Whenever I hear myself say that, I get a lump in my throat because I can’t even really believe that I’m saying it. She and I are linked, and that’s forever, and yeah, so I’m starting to write songs for her upcoming ventures, some of which will be duets, some of which will be solo stuff. We’re not even sure what it is.

Basically, my task was to go home and fuckin’ write songs… mother fucker. If she had told me to get on all fours and bark like a dog for 37 hours, I probably would have been grateful to do so.

Turns out they met when Douglas was in London to record for a duo project she has coming up with Joe Goddard. Roisin invited her to a seminar Weatherall was holding - Amy credits Weatherall with breaking Never Saw It Coming - and they went out on the lash afterward.

I've always known it's pronounced Ro-sheen but that doesn't stop my stupid brain from reading it as Roy-sin every single time xps

― chonky floof (groovypanda), Thursday, July 30, 2020 9:17 PM (three days ago)

I think the point is it's actually rosh-in

― or something, Thursday, July 30, 2020 9:20 PM (three days ago)

Nah, the fada over the 'ó' and 'í' generally indicates a long vowel, so it is indeed Row-Sheen. Up north, we pronounce it Rosh-sheen, but that wouldn't be the case in Leinster (where Ms. Murphy is from).

very interesting tidbit from recent interviews is she's already working on a new album that's being produced by dj koze

ufo, Thursday, 24 September 2020 10:18 (three years ago) link

yes - album was pushed back to october 2 due to "processing delays". one more week to go!

That "Something More" vid is majestic, and I don't even care about the song that much

timber euros (seandalai), Saturday, 26 September 2020 01:45 (three years ago) link

I think the song itself is great, it's just let down by dreary production. A track that sounds like it couldn't even be bothered getting out of bed.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 26 September 2020 12:17 (three years ago) link

Quietus interview, including the nugget that one song on Roisin Machine was inspired by discovering a K-Punk review of Moloko last year.

Please don’t stop dancing – that’s another part of my manifesto. I dance round the park and in my house. Scientists know for a fact it’s the best cardiovascular activity for your brain. It burns pathways, it’s maths and motion and absurdity and poetry. It’s magic stuff. I’ve never stopped dancing… and the record is like going back to that girl in the flat in Stockport, freaking out to Biting Tongues, rolling around on my orange sofa.

whatever, I actually like this dish

octobeard, Thursday, 1 October 2020 08:47 (three years ago) link

new album unsurprisingly quite good but none of the previously unreleased tracks are among the best on it

ufo, Friday, 2 October 2020 04:23 (three years ago) link

agree although I love “game changer” with its callbacks to “murphy’s law” and rhythm that seems part “the dreaming” and part...something from ruby blue, maybe.

the continuous mix nature of it all means that even some of the singles that I’ve been rinsing for years feel fresh

monotony, Friday, 2 October 2020 04:37 (three years ago) link

also, kudos to those brave enough to stomach andouilette

Narcissus with the RTE concert orchestra:

erratic wolf angular guitarist (sic), Friday, 2 October 2020 06:21 (three years ago) link

just put on "Murphy's Law" on Sp*t*fy and the original 8-minute track has an "- Extended Mix" added to it when it wasn't there before (in addition to the ~4-minute edit), so my guess is the length of the album version (and the other album tracks) are gonna be somewhere in between those running times

Looking forward to hearing the continuous mix (!!) but on this: the digital version apparently comes with previously-released long versions of the six singles as bonus tracks: the Original Mix-es of Simulation, Incapable and Murphy's Law, the Extended Mix of Murphy's Law, the Disco Mix of Jealousy, and the 2019 re-recording or edit or w/e of Narcissus - all now labelled "Extended Mix"

octobeard, Friday, 2 October 2020 07:03 (three years ago) link

Wow, I put this on this morning when it came on my release radar, and several hours later, I've listened to it 3 or 4 times in a row, and I've basically forgotten that any other music even exists?!?!?
