I lived in south Texas for four years, there were no joys in sweltering at 40C+. one of the many reasons I came here was to avoid usa midwestern summer heat, but as gyac notes there is no escape from global warming. gonna make granitas now.

Y'all need more of this in your lives and you'll come around:

also helpful: I (currently) live in a basement apt, the only upside of which is it's always cool inside #basementprivilege

shoveling snow is the only part of winter I actually enjoy

I don't love it but I don't hate it either. Fuck slush, though.

pomenitul, Friday, 31 July 2020 15:13 (three years ago) link

the only slush I like is in the granitas I'm currently making

I think experiencing a week of Winnipeg in February made me a pro-summer radical forever tbh

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Friday, 31 July 2020 15:15 (three years ago) link

Québec City in early January is the worst I’ve experienced but I hear Winnipeg is on another level altogether, so: respect.

pomenitul, Friday, 31 July 2020 15:17 (three years ago) link

I honestly have no fucking clue how anyone lives there.

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Friday, 31 July 2020 15:19 (three years ago) link

Just came here to say, "It's like a fucking oven out there", but I see I've been beaten to the punhc.

I don't mind the heat so long as it's dry. Been 109F/42C here past few days and I'm just like pffft is that all ya got, Sun?? But one day recently it was 90ish and just humid enough for me to feel it (weather app said 36%) and I hated life.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 31 July 2020 16:16 (three years ago) link

"...but it's a dry heat."

lol, xp

nickn, Friday, 31 July 2020 16:19 (three years ago) link

WTF why can't we just have one week of 22-24 degrees, sunshine, and no miserable pissy rain.
That's all I ask for.

kinder, Friday, 31 July 2020 17:30 (three years ago) link

it's dropped to a more manageable 25 degrees here and dark storm clouds are on the horizon, that's more like it

calzino, Friday, 31 July 2020 17:41 (three years ago) link

i just made gazpacho. currently in the freezer until the second before it freezes. i will know when that is just by..... knowing

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 31 July 2020 17:45 (three years ago) link

Heat has dropped six degrees in less than an hour, that’s a storm on the way, right?

let them microwave their rice (gyac), Friday, 31 July 2020 17:51 (three years ago) link

Windows open front and back because the resulting breeze is the only way this is bearable. Flat now smells of next door's BBQ.

koogs, Friday, 31 July 2020 17:54 (three years ago) link

I can take bbq smells, but the smell of weed from the wanker next door penetrating every room in the house is enough to turn me into a cold-blooded murderer.

Bought this air purifier (Pure Enrichment Pure Zone 3-in-1 Air Purifier, if the Amazon link doesn't work) two years ago and have gotten amazing results.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 31 July 2020 18:07 (three years ago) link

I don't think it would help with how powerful and pungent the aroma of weed is these days, when he is smoking it at the back of his house he might as well be sat in my kitchen. I am just going to wear the bastard down through attrition and noise, because he started a war with the wrong person here!

calzino, Friday, 31 July 2020 18:20 (three years ago) link

one for the trouble with neighbours thread really, but when it is hot the troubles feel somewhat intensified and ready to burst into deadly violence!

I can't think of anything worse on a very hot day other than sitting next to a wood-burner full of industrial waste.

calzino, Friday, 31 July 2020 19:38 (three years ago) link

I was grilling the other day. Flipped open my digital meat thermometer, which causes it to turn on, and thought it was out of calibration because it read over 100F just from the air temp. Then I realized uh wait that's correct. It didn't feel that hot out! My house was blocking the sun. I've now grilled in 0F and 100+F and will take 100F all day every day.

Sonny Shamrock (Tom D.), Friday, 31 July 2020 19:55 (three years ago) link

ok wtf how is it hotter here than Phoenix?? Never seen that happen. 2000 ft higher elevation, 100 miles further north.

I prob should raise my thermostat a few degrees so AC doesn't explode

People who love hot weather and are like ISN’T THIS GREAT, especially when the weather is only going to get even hotter and eventually kill us all, are the worst. No questions at this time.

You think clearly and are of sane mind. You may proceed with living your life.

I lived in south Texas for four years, there were no joys in sweltering at 40C+. one of the many reasons I came here was to avoid usa midwestern summer heat, but as gyac notes there is no escape from global warming. gonna make granitas now.

This is also a rational mindset. Thank you very much for your contribution to this thread.

Those of you actually embracing the summer heat: do understand that as a native Texan (and someone from a Mexican family) I automatically see you as having something wrong with you and needing to seek out professional help. I've already lived a lifetime's worth of heat and sun, as have my antecedents. If I had the ability to live out the rest of my life in a location with a paucity of both and leave places such as the U.S. Sun Belt to those of you lacking sanity, I would.

Wasn’t it 54C in Iraq this week? 20C hotter than London today.

Michael Jones, Friday, 31 July 2020 21:03 (three years ago) link

Here's our low temperatures for tonight. 60ºF = 15.5ºC....... 70º=21º

I can't stand heat. Not sure why I live in Florida, lol.

When I start fantasizing about winning the lottery the main reason is to be able to buy two homes, one in Tampa for the 65 degree F (18 C) winters, and another one in Portland, OR for the 75 degree summers.

Here's the shitty thing about a lot places that are cold af in winter, the US Midwest in particular: it also gets uncomfortably warm and muggy in the summer! You spend winter fantasizing about how nice it'll be once it's not freezing, all the stuff you'll be able to do, you get a couple nice weeks of Spring weather, and then the heat, humidity, and bugs descend upon you and you fantasize about the arrival of cool Autumn weather! At least here in AZ I merely have to wait until the sun goes down to get relief.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 31 July 2020 21:46 (three years ago) link

Been thinking a lot about northern NM for that reason.

Irritable Baal (WmC), Saturday, 1 August 2020 13:52 (three years ago) link

one undeniable upside of heat is that cold showers are wonderful. whereas exiting a hot shower in winter is one of the worst casual sensations in existence

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Saturday, 1 August 2020 14:00 (three years ago) link

Preach it.

pomenitul, Saturday, 1 August 2020 14:10 (three years ago) link

Lukewarm showers work better for me for some reason, but the pre bed shower is a classic.

Winter is for baths.

The place we recently moved into only comes with a shower, so I can no longer pretend that I'm finally going to pick up my love of baths where I left it off, uh, 25 years ago.
