I think maybe we should start calling Róisín's bangers "bing bong ding donger"s

the only song I know by her is the one that goes "bing bong ding dong" and it's in my head all the time

that remix is track 3 on "Róisíngles ‎2008-2011 [Bs]" btw :)

it's nice (especially to be occasionally reminded of House Of House, RIP) but the original version is such a great bing bonger

Any idea what happened to them?

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Thursday, 30 July 2020 22:30 (three years ago) link

One of them was also half of Still Going. It's possible HoH only ever intended to do the one single and just got a few remix gigs off the back of it.

Steppin' RZA (sic), Thursday, 30 July 2020 22:47 (three years ago) link

what a single though!

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Thursday, 30 July 2020 22:53 (three years ago) link

for those who have never heard it, this is the House of House single we're talking about:

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 31 July 2020 00:26 (three years ago) link

if the other four tracks are as good as the six we've already heard this will surely be her best album?

ufo, Friday, 31 July 2020 05:41 (three years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ8dJ4b4zMA

interestingly this version of "jealousy" transitions from the disco mix to the house mix at the end, i wonder if that's what the album edit will be like? the album edit is around 4 minutes

ufo, Friday, 31 July 2020 05:51 (three years ago) link

the new single might be the best one yet

monotony, Friday, 31 July 2020 08:20 (three years ago) link

from the press bio:

"Although packed to the rafters with masterclass singles, including 'Simulation', 'Jealousy', 'Incapable', 'Narcissus' and 'Murphy’s Law', it is also an ingeniously and seamlessly edited listening experience, designed to be listened to in one uninterrupted sitting, from start to dazzling finish."

winters (josh), Friday, 31 July 2020 08:21 (three years ago) link

xp though at the same time i've returned to "murphy's law" over and over in lockdown to the point where it's pretty well solidified as one of my top songs of 2020

monotony, Friday, 31 July 2020 08:21 (three years ago) link

good spot!

I'm totally into the idea of the album being a tight comp of edits of bongers we already know, though it has the potential of being a waste without radio play to send ppl out to earning appearances by Mickey Murphy's Daughter :(

(xpost ooh)

I hope they've tightened up Simulation, it really drags on.

drunk midnight youtubing, it also turns out there was an eight-minute cutdown of the 12-minute original for the Simulation video btw

if the other four tracks are as good as the six we've already heard this will surely be her best album?

the first two solo albums are still very good! but no problem assuming this will be on par with those, and it's lovely that she's held onto the Parrot collaboration so long and finally made a single album out of their work.

Steppin' RZA (sic), Friday, 31 July 2020 08:29 (three years ago) link

the album version of simulation is 8 min but a little longer than the video edit

ufo, Friday, 31 July 2020 08:33 (three years ago) link

vinyl pre-ordered. saddened by absence of jacuzzi rollercoaster on the album.

closed beta (NotEnough), Friday, 31 July 2020 08:53 (three years ago) link

This album is all Crooked Man joints! Jacuzzi Rollercoaster was one of eight tracks on her Maurice Fulton collab 12"s

Steppin' RZA (sic), Friday, 31 July 2020 09:00 (three years ago) link

it would have been nice if she'd put out an album compiling those 2018 singles but you can just do that yourself at least

ufo, Friday, 31 July 2020 09:42 (three years ago) link

"Something More" is new on UK Spotify today: 4:01 edit, 7:57 extended.

mike t-diva, Friday, 31 July 2020 11:28 (three years ago) link

“The album is called Róisín Machine because I am a machine. I never stop.”

winters (josh), Friday, 31 July 2020 16:53 (three years ago) link

omg "something more." just imagining the silly shit i would pull to this on the dance floor.

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 31 July 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

i would pre-order but i'm not sure if i would ever get it :|. ordered a PAN vinyl in may and i think it's still in the uk.

This album is all Crooked Man joints!

Is it all Parrot? Don't get me wrong, I like each of these tracks, to a point, sometimes a high point, but most of them really do drag. Almost every one outstays it's welcome and even though this bpm is *very me* I want them to be zippier. There's a lethargy in them that I find a bit depressing. I'm sure that's a very unpopular opinion on here, though.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 31 July 2020 22:56 (three years ago) link

It's quite possible that R Machine feels the same way, actually, as she mentioned on something (was it the chat with Jessie Ware?) that the parrot collab was done now.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 31 July 2020 23:00 (three years ago) link

“Róisín Machine is the culmination of a rich, decades-long partnership between Murphy and one of her most trusted collaborators Crooked Man aka DJ Parrot.”

Steppin' RZA (sic), Friday, 31 July 2020 23:11 (three years ago) link

while I'm c+p'ing, Something More was written by Amy Douglas:

"I asked her to write me a song about never being full or satisfied, exponential need," Murphy says. "She sent a very basic but brilliant demo very soon after, just her singing and playing a piano. The challenge then is to get the music direction right, the arrangement and the voicing."

Murphy described "Something More" as "a swansong to how we once lived, there's plenty of bravado in the lyrics and the character is a kind of antihero but the indefinable yearning and the feeling of arriving at a point of emptiness is universal right now!"

I'm assuming the Amy Douglas who is half of Peach Melba with Juan Maclean

Steppin' RZA (sic), Friday, 31 July 2020 23:15 (three years ago) link

Never Saw It Coming Amy/Parrot joint was probably my tune of 2019. Amazing that she wrote Something More! She's quite the force of nature.

again, for those that haven't heard:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq_IWcNfJOk

And yes, sic, I know what people write in press releases!

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 31 July 2020 23:32 (three years ago) link

Never Saw It Coming is one of those rare tracks where I/you thought, "oh I haven't heard this track for years"/"oh fuck, this is brand new!" when it came out. I think it was/is a classic straight off the bat. You felt like you knew it as soon as you heard it.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 31 July 2020 23:35 (three years ago) link

although this is ABSOLUTELY THEE VERSION of Never Saw It Coming:

fkng amazing.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 00:06 (three years ago) link

Had never heard that - thanks! (FYI discogs says two remixes by Crooked Man, but the original is written with and produced by a NYC guy)

I guess the press release doesn't say that anyone else didn't produce anything on Machine, but it does seem to intentionally imply that it's all Parrot.

Steppin' RZA (sic), Saturday, 1 August 2020 01:27 (three years ago) link

here's the audio for the full-length Something More btw

Steppin' RZA (sic), Saturday, 1 August 2020 01:29 (three years ago) link

she previously said before the album was announced that it was all produced by him?

ufo, Saturday, 1 August 2020 01:33 (three years ago) link

Had never heard that - thanks!

Very happy to have introduced you to it but amazed as well, sic, wtf?!

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 01:59 (three years ago) link

I'm gen. amazed!

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:00 (three years ago) link

I'm delighted, tbh.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:06 (three years ago) link

I have played that out in Glasgow and had a room of people singing every word of the track. That probably says a lot about Glasgow and also skews my perception of the general reception of the track.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:15 (three years ago) link

she previously said before the album was announced that it was all produced by him?

The quote in Josh's revive a month ago still only implies it, now I look again. It's a pretty safe bet though!

We can treat that Amy Douglas jam as a sister song to the Roisin album

Steppin' RZA (sic), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:24 (three years ago) link

totally. best sister.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:39 (three years ago) link

sic, also worth checking out "Walls (Subsidence version)" by crooked man w/ Amy Douglas. I won't embed it, I don't want to turn this into an Amy Douglas thread.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Saturday, 1 August 2020 02:47 (three years ago) link

it's all Parrot

winters (josh), Saturday, 1 August 2020 04:12 (three years ago) link

Damn, all this Amy Douglas stuff on Spotify is HOT!!!

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 August 2020 04:17 (three years ago) link

Love “Never Saw It Coming”, but prefer the Crooked Man Remix to the Dub.

Tim F, Saturday, 1 August 2020 04:25 (three years ago) link

Amy on writing for Roisin, last October:

I’m starting to write songs for Róisín Murphy. That’s another biggie. I have a very deep and meaningful relationship with Ms. Murphy. Whenever I hear myself say that, I get a lump in my throat because I can’t even really believe that I’m saying it. She and I are linked, and that’s forever, and yeah, so I’m starting to write songs for her upcoming ventures, some of which will be duets, some of which will be solo stuff. We’re not even sure what it is.

Basically, my task was to go home and fuckin’ write songs… mother fucker. If she had told me to get on all fours and bark like a dog for 37 hours, I probably would have been grateful to do so.

Turns out they met when Douglas was in London to record for a duo project she has coming up with Joe Goddard. Roisin invited her to a seminar Weatherall was holding - Amy credits Weatherall with breaking Never Saw It Coming - and they went out on the lash afterward.

Steppin' RZA (sic), Saturday, 1 August 2020 09:34 (three years ago) link

I've always known it's pronounced Ro-sheen but that doesn't stop my stupid brain from reading it as Roy-sin every single time xps

― chonky floof (groovypanda), Thursday, July 30, 2020 9:17 PM (three days ago)

I think the point is it's actually rosh-in

― or something, Thursday, July 30, 2020 9:20 PM (three days ago)

Nah, the fada over the 'ó' and 'í' generally indicates a long vowel, so it is indeed Row-Sheen. Up north, we pronounce it Rosh-sheen, but that wouldn't be the case in Leinster (where Ms. Murphy is from).

very interesting tidbit from recent interviews is she's already working on a new album that's being produced by dj koze

ufo, Thursday, 24 September 2020 10:18 (three years ago) link

yes - album was pushed back to october 2 due to "processing delays". one more week to go!
