is it a curse... or a blessing in disguise (getting a new machine)

lag∞n, Thursday, 30 July 2020 17:30 (three years ago) link

Depending on the machine a gasket swap is cheap and DIY - getting the old one out is hard tho, screwing a screw into it and pulling carefully can work

assert (MatthewK), Thursday, 30 July 2020 20:52 (three years ago) link

I'm sure you will end up with a good and reasonably priced rig!

Don't be so sure but thanks!

lukas, Thursday, 30 July 2020 22:43 (three years ago) link

xp yeah i'm going to try to repair it, doesn't seem that hard and a new machine is doable but not exactly what i wanted to be spending money on.

two weeks pass...

I ended up buying a nicer grinder and stopping there. Then I started experimenting with different grind sizes, brew times, etc (there was a spreadsheet.) Tried a World Aeropress Championship recipe and didn't like it. Started to wonder whether I had been wasting a lot of money and time.

Then I went to a finer grind size and less water and found something I'm very happy with. So I substantially improved my morning coffee without, I think, acquiring a new hobby.

lukas, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 02:05 (three years ago) link

finer grind def makes a big difference, much more flavorful coffee ime

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 02:10 (three years ago) link

don't know about these quiddities, I buy Peet's coffee ground to 4/10, store it in an airtight container, and spoon some out each morning to brew in a drip coffeemaker

Dan S, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 02:16 (three years ago) link

as I get older though I’m just as happy with a morning cup of tea

Dan S, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 02:16 (three years ago) link

if the coffee I buy has a coarser grind I just use more

Dan S, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 02:28 (three years ago) link

the key element of a coffeemaker to me is having a pot that is a thermos, not one with a heating element underneath that just burns the brewed coffee while it sits

Dan S, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 02:32 (three years ago) link

I love cold brew, but all my attempts to make it so far have sucked. It is burning a hole in my bank account. Any tips on how to succeed in DIYing it, please share!

For some reason (hormones? body chemistry? taste getting more expensive?) I can't tolerate coffee from the coffee maker at all anymore, so it's either iced instant or cold brew.

Alpha 666, The Number of the Beast (I M Losted), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

Dry Iced Americanos are all that I need

Please put it in my personal cup. I have a reusable straw in my back pocket

beamish13, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 18:08 (three years ago) link

I M Losted, i have documented before - on this thread, i think - my homebrew cold drip, which just needs an aeropress and an empty plastic bottle. aeropress costs like 25 bucks. well worth it.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 20:21 (three years ago) link

Tried a World Aeropress Championship recipe and didn't like it.

which one? I’ve tried a few.

beard papa, Thursday, 20 August 2020 01:56 (three years ago) link

The 2017. Which doesn't mean the 2017 is bad, I just figured out I want a shorter, more concentrated cup, something halfway to espresso. So far, anyway. If there's one in particular you recommend, I'm interested.

lukas, Thursday, 20 August 2020 02:11 (three years ago) link

participating in this thread cursed me and my espresso machine spewed hot water and coffee grounds all over the place this morning. i guess the gasket is dead : (

i always wish that style of grinder played calliope music

lol. i got the breville bambino upgraded "pro" package from seattle coffee gear which includes a second single-walled portafilter along with breville's standard double-wall. still getting my bearings but one thing i can say is that it functionally doesn't have a heatup time. they say it comes to temp within 3 seconds which seems like some sort of magic trick.

thank you for your support

Office of a company I did some work for last year had a breville. Really good coffee machine and they bought great beans for it.

My coffee maker is the alibaba knockoff of this. Brews a great cup, 1 porlex full of Ethiopian in the top, fill with warm water to the 3 cup line on the bottom. Very smooth but strong coffee.

Siphon coffee maker IIRC

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Friday, 21 August 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link

I almost bought that one when I moved into a place with a gas stove but there were too many hot, fiddly, breakable glass bits for me.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Friday, 21 August 2020 00:44 (three years ago) link

I’ve broken the top part once but the whole thing only cost 30 dollars and a new glass was 10. I really like the taste, it’s somehow smoother and cleaner than filter or press.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Friday, 21 August 2020 01:33 (three years ago) link

so this may be a dumb question but do you actually light some kind of flame under the bottom to use it?

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 August 2020 01:38 (three years ago) link

A burner or I’ve seen some using like a Benson Burner setup or can of sterno.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Friday, 21 August 2020 01:40 (three years ago) link

KitchenAid makes an electric one.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Friday, 21 August 2020 01:40 (three years ago) link

It’s a little spirit burner, runs on meths/alcohol. Electric burners and all electric ones are available.

Bodum does an electric one I’ve had my eye on.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Friday, 21 August 2020 04:18 (three years ago) link

That looked like a lot of grounds for that much water. If the "6 cups" was the standard coffee carafe 6 cups and the scoops were standard scoops, that is four times what I use in my drip machine.
