xp to Neanderthal—I totally understand this. But there's a whole spectrum of reasonable response to this kind of thing btw talking about it/taking it seriously and going into a panic.

I am speaking about the people who I literally see doing the latter right now. of which the number is non-negligible, despite the news being less than an hour old. as of right now, that doesn't include anybody ITT.

Trump even worded it as a question, as he usually does with things that he has no intention of doing, so that he can attempt to use plausible deniability ("what? I was just asking if it's possible!"). just like the time he threatened to revoke federal funding from schools that barred Milo from speaking - he worded it as a question that time too. or like the time he tried to demand a new election in Arizona during mid-terms, because he claimed there was widespread fraud. same thing.

Fair....aren't there episodes of him "just asking?" that function as shoehorns though? For real shit? I can't keep up with all of it anymore

singular wolf erotica producer (Hadrian VIII), Thursday, 30 July 2020 14:01 (three years ago) link

Yes, but I think it's fair to even push back against that. I'm just so tired of the whole, "lol it's just Trump, that's what he does", which only excuses it the next time too. The Dems should be forcefully pushing back against this "just asking questions" every single fucking time - it's what the GOP would be doing to a Dem president. It's not going to make a difference, no, but there should be a highly visible, coordinated campaign to push back against this shit, every day if needed.

the correct response to him is "sure, let's delay it a few weeks - that will give us additional time to get our voters who were illegally purged from voter rolls reinstated, as well as paying the fees to reinstate felons' voting rights in Florida. how does two more weeks sound?"

xpost obviously Nancy et al have to reply to it. that's their job.

don't think I'm not scared of Trump. I even overstepped and called milo a Trump revisionist once because I felt like he was going too easy on him.

just tuesday in the house of representatives the most corrupt attorney general in US history appeared, finally, under threat of subpoena. this seems kind of scary, even without 2scoops tweet this morning

Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., pointed out that Trump has suggested that no ballots should be counted after Election Day and asked Barr, "If the president asks you to intervene and try to stop states from counting legal ballots after Election Day, will you do the right thing and refuse?"

Barr responded, "I will follow the law." He separately said he would "enforce" the law. So that means if a state has issued a ruling saying that votes cannot be counted if they were postmarked before Election Day but didn't arrive until after that, he would be willing to intervene on behalf of the president to ensure those votes weren't counted.

Anyone who lived through the Florida 2000 election debacle should know that this is not a matter for federal law enforcement. Elections are run by the states. If there's a dispute it goes to the courts and in a worst-case scenario to the Congress. Barr has no authority to intervene at all in how states count and tabulate their votes, but judging from his recent behavior, I doubt that would stop him. With Barr, "follow the law," seems to mean "do whatever benefits Donald Trump and hurts his enemies."

XVI Pedicabo eam (Neanderthal), Thursday, 30 July 2020 14:09 (three years ago) link

why don't we ask Barr and Trump to go to a state voting station of their choosing, then invite known COVID patients to show up for a private voting session, and all simultaneously lift their masks and cough and spit the fuck over both of them.

actually why wait until the election

XVI Pedicabo eam (Neanderthal), Thursday, 30 July 2020 14:13 (three years ago) link

Okay, one more Take: If your general election pitch is that you can pull the country back to normal - booming economy! vaccine! etc! - "things will be so bad in November that we can't have an election" is not helping you do that.

So this fed troop presence in major cities is just going to probably be the new normal huh? They ratchet it up, Dems get elected and try to grind the gears a little on the surface. But it just trucks along in the background until the next insane crypto—or very likely *literal*—fascist comes into office.

Because golly geez we just couldn’t push through the necessary legislation. The sausage-making is not for Pollyannas you see. I mean, it’s *technically* legal and jeez looks like Dems in precarious districts and red states where the GOP has super-super majorities (but no major cities looool) are clamoring for the Robocops, Inc. They vote too, ya know. Look guys these things aren’t just fixed by the snap of the fingers. Lots of ins, lotta of outs, lotta what have yous. And lookit, some of our very biggest donors are looking into this, fielding simulations of how mechsuit supersoldiers could deploy PPE for Covid flare ups or the next pandemic that we’ll absolutely shit the bed on. They’ll do cool things like direct traffic in congested cities! “Deal with” inevitable climate change refugees, etc. That’ll be cool right!? Gah why’s it always yes gotta be doom & gloom with you all?? Grow up, etc etc

XP: There's been a group of ~80 leaders emeritus who've gamed out scenarios for how Trump can interfere with electoral results:

WBUR: On Point: This War Game Maps Out What Happens If The President Contests The Election.

IIRC, delaying the election wasn't mentioned, but there's a lot of dire things that Trump could do, particularly with mail-in ballots. Voter suppression leads to a closer election than polls, a contested swing state, Covid-19 scare used to prevent mail in ballot counting, the DHS nazis called to street protests, and there's no one in the government in a good position to fight back. The presidency holds all the Federal law enforcement, and the career millitary guy on the program (Lawrence Wilkerson, aide to Sec State Powell) was practically begging the military to stay in their barrocks.

Sanpaku, Thursday, 30 July 2020 18:13 (three years ago) link

Voter suppression is one they're already actively pursuing.

They have to lean on state legislatures and Governors for that, but they have enough cronies to do that around the country.

ACLU probably gonna be at the ready with tons of state lawsuits for States disenfranchising voters or disallowing vote by mail. I don't have huge confidence that this SCOTUS would rule in their favor on most, but...gotta try.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/29/politics/trump-economic-approval-rating-analysis/index.html

But Trump now may be seeing this advantage dissipate. His approval on the economy has seen a dramatic decline since the beginning of the year, and he's lost his edge on the economy over former Vice President Joe Biden.

NO WAY, Harry!

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Thursday, 30 July 2020 18:24 (three years ago) link

I do love how he's losing his "edge" to someone who is, afaict, literally doing next to nothing beyond existing as an alternative. Trump would probably lose his edge to Pop-tarts.
