if Barr gets it and dies of the VID along with Louie Gohmert, their bodies should be dropped out of a helicopter onto the Capitol steps

I know song parodies sung by government employees isn't everyone's cup of tea, but...

well, i don't really think that per capita can be assessed as of itself as being per capita because what does per capita feel like?

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 19:40 (three years ago) link

oh, that's from the ancient day of may 20, 2020. we can safely assume that's he's put in the time and effort to learn what the (very common, essential) term "per capita" means

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 29 July 2020 19:41 (three years ago) link

we should try to find a way of using "per capita" that puts things on a comparable playing field, so we can do "apples to apples" comparisons

You're going to have to be more specific when you are referring to per capitas, I can think of at least four different per capitas.

Ironically the suburbs stuff plays best in a state he has no chance of winning, and I suspect the Liveable California folks (ie racist anti-tax nimbys) are not thrilled that their alignment with Trump (who is using their exact language here) is going to be brought up regularly now.

bouie was just discussing on twitter how plenty of people think trump can win reelection but essentially no one thinks he can win the popular vote. that's pretty fucked up!

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 July 2020 21:39 (three years ago) link

there will be a time and place to address electoral reform. but it is not right now, after 2 of the last 5 presidential terms have been won by republican presidents who didn't win the popular vote. instead, we must wait 10-20 years to talk about it, sometime in the distant future, when there is greater trust and integrity in politics

Probably not in private (these groups predate nextdoor and Reagan for that matter), but they know which way the wind blows and they’ve spent the last couple of decades rebranding their public image.

Insane thread from IL GOP Senate candidate (lol, good luck with that), in which he offers the perfect motto for the GOP in 2020: "Death will eventually come for everyone."

There’s this mountain of pure diamond. It takes an hour to climb it and an hour to go around it, and every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. And when the entire mountain is chiseled away, the first second of eternity will have passed.

The scenario hinges also on an assumption that Trump’s political project is more weakened internally—in the psychological sense—than it is even in the external sense, as measured by polls and campaign coverage.

frogbs, Thursday, 30 July 2020 13:30 (three years ago) link

yes. exactly

ignoring his tweets, my friends will all freak but he does this "coyly asking questions" thing all the time so that hopefully his supporters or Fox News broadcasters et al will pick up the ball and run with it.

I get this, but also....isn't the near certainty that some of his more vocal supporters (inclusing members of congress) *will* pick the ball up and run with it reason enough *not* to ignore his tweets?

It seems clear to me by now that his tweets actually, really do impact policymaking. Which is different than saying he doesn't also spout off random nonsense that often has no bearing on anything.

singular wolf erotica producer (Hadrian VIII), Thursday, 30 July 2020 13:32 (three years ago) link

Tbf I think it's totally reasonable for people to freak out about this. It's the constant erosion of norms we've been seeing and, come on, the simple response of "he can't legally do that" doesn't feel like as much of a palliative as people who say it might think.

He can't legally send unmarked troops into random cities to kidnap citizens. But he did.
He can't legally use his office to direct Secret Service to stay in his properties to enrich himself. But he did.
He can't legally separate refugee kids from parents. But he did.
He can't collude with a foreign power to influence the outcome of an election. But, despite what the GOP senate wants you to think, it sure as as hell seems like he did.
He can't legally obstruct justice in ongoing investigations. But he did, multiple times.
etc etc

Obviously the elections lie with the states and it would be infinitely more difficult to actually postpone an election. It almost certainly won't happen. But let's not shame people who are freaking out about him even stating the intention, because JFC "he can't legally do that" has not stopped this fucking administration before.
