LJ, I found this by typing "pivot to video" into the Google search bar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pivot_to_video

It took me a total of 3 seconds.

Also, we were all around and kicking 5 years ago when this nonsense happened so I don't believe that you are actually unaware of it.

shout-out to his family (DJP), Monday, 27 July 2020 13:14 (three years ago) link

omg i wasn't aware of the gallows euphemistic use of the phrase, posting it here on ilx is literally like walking into the oscars and asking if everyone thought television was the future

lmao sorry

and yet...written criticism is definitely suffering atm? what is to be done

LJ do you have some genetic disorder that prevents you from just admitting you don't know what you're talking about?

unless you've actually worked in running a media outlet that tried to make money on video, you don't, trust me,

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 27 July 2020 13:40 (three years ago) link

i was admitting my mistake there! then asking how written criticism has to adapt? all the big qns

imago, Monday, 27 July 2020 13:42 (three years ago) link

for the health and safety of their writers this site should make it clear writers don't choose scores

― devvvine, Monday, July 27, 2020 8:18 AM (fifty-three minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

for the health and safety of everyone metacritic should make it clear neither writers nor editors wrote their score weighting algorithm

but critic is now a vocal, bardic tradition

Am I supposed to be LOLing @ this?

well yes 100% this as well (if shutting it down completely isnt an option)

anyway, i'm logging out

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 27 July 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

brad c'mon this is a bit much, what is ilx for if not shooting the shit and road-testing opinions, u know i am not set in my ways and constantly have my mind changed about things, yeah i've always had a bone to pick with pitchfork but they've always exuded an imo unearned sense of authority, and yes i know i'm probably being a little uncharitable, but they are so prevalent that it's v hard to see them through anything other than a distorted lens

imago, Monday, 27 July 2020 14:27 (three years ago) link

i don't have any beef with the individual pitchfork writers (well, the odd historical exception, but none among present company!)

imago, Monday, 27 July 2020 14:30 (three years ago) link

for me, the fact that i frequently exhibit behaviors common in people who have been diagnosed with asd means that i need to put _more_ work and thought into how i present myself online.

imago, Monday, 27 July 2020 15:34 (three years ago) link

i've always had a bone to pick with pitchfork but they've always exuded an imo unearned sense of authority

there's an incredibly long thread here on ILM that takes Pitchfork to task for everything from participating in the music industry PR game to not giving BNM to certain genres to failing to catch grammatical errors to adjusting their year-end lists to make certain ~statements~, which suggests their sense of authority has been entirely earned whether you/we like it or not! If it's unearned what the hell is this cursed thread about?

rob, Monday, 27 July 2020 15:37 (three years ago) link

the title should really be changed at some point

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Monday, 27 July 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link

8.0 with no BNM is their traditional jazz album score

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 27 July 2020 15:48 (three years ago) link

It's also the score they gave the 1975's latest, which suggests it's also their traditional "Brad" album score.

MarkoP, Monday, 27 July 2020 15:49 (three years ago) link

That's because the entire field of contemporary jazz deserves a 8.0 iirc.

xp

Yeah but can you think of a recent jazz album about which you can credibly say that 'no music has ever sounded quite like it'?

pomenitul, Monday, 27 July 2020 15:52 (three years ago) link

Does the Coin Coin series feature Rashomon-level Dawson’s Creek-type narratives? I think not.

pomenitul, Monday, 27 July 2020 15:58 (three years ago) link

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 27 July 2020 16:01 (three years ago) link

I'm not necessarily in love w/the album, but I don't feel like the review really considers the music deeply enough (or maybe it just uses the terms "indie" once too often). I also think it probably deserved BNM, but whatevs.

Sonny Shamrock (Tom D.), Monday, 27 July 2020 16:03 (three years ago) link

The Coin Coin series is literally Matana Roberts sorting through her own family's history with slavery, Jim Crow, etc. through music and multimedia art, so...yes?

thread finally delivers--I didn't know this was out already!

rob, Monday, 27 July 2020 16:08 (three years ago) link

I'mma step out of my passive-aggressive irony and simply state the obvious (to me): contemporary jazz is infinitely more interesting than most of the shit that gets reviewed on p4k and Coin Coin Chapter Four: Memphis, for instance, deserved way better than an 8.3. Also, Taylor Swift's music is more like a 2.0 and as much as I enjoy Fiona Apple's previous albums, Fetch the Bolt Cutters bit off more than it can chew and is more of a 7.0 in my book and certainly not deserving of its plaudits.

pomenitul, Monday, 27 July 2020 16:09 (three years ago) link
