Maybe they decided that since the track record for anime to live action adaptations is like 80 to 1 against, this doesn't need to be made

And Netflix's last one, the Death Note adaptation, might honestly be the worst one I've seen

Vinnie, Saturday, 25 July 2020 12:35 (three years ago) link

Filming is happening in NZ; they and other productions there got the government go-ahead.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 26 September 2021 17:30 (two years ago) link

i will of course watch this even tho i do not need it

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Sunday, 26 September 2021 18:46 (two years ago) link

A good approach. (Started a rewatch of the original last night. Amazing still.)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 26 September 2021 19:30 (two years ago) link

Oh I'll definitely watch but my hopes are soooo low for this. Reasons being 1) Netflix 2) can't help but pale in comparison to one of the best anime ever

Vinnie, Monday, 27 September 2021 11:57 (two years ago) link

Same feeling here. I'll give it a shot, of course

Nhex, Monday, 27 September 2021 13:20 (two years ago) link

It'll auto-advance to the top of my watching queue and we'll see what happens.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 00:19 (two years ago) link

i remember the anime being stylish but empty. not that i finished it.

adam t. (abanana), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 03:06 (two years ago) link

I think maybe you should have finished it

enough style can be its own substance

Jaime Pressly and America (f. hazel), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 16:20 (two years ago) link

^ That's how I'd break it down to an extent

Vinnie, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 23:26 (two years ago) link

I have a long-standing crush on John Cho, and also loved the anime, so I am very interested how they combine these two things I love.

3-2-1, let's jam.

recreating scenes shot by shot just makes it look like an expensive fan cosplay video

Lots of complaining online but I rather liked the first episode. Slower pace but it all works and the music is unsurprisingly on point.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 November 2021 23:39 (two years ago) link

Haven't watched yet but seen several reddit posts that look suspiciously like astroturfing

Vinnie, Saturday, 20 November 2021 03:03 (two years ago) link

first ep was fine but my feeling is if i was gonna watch this or rewatch the anime, why not do the latter?

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 20 November 2021 15:44 (two years ago) link

clips of this I've seen are cringeworthy

akm, Saturday, 20 November 2021 16:31 (two years ago) link

not watching this but the whole thing just looks like a goofy community theatre sendup of the source material shot like a film school sendup of the source material

the whole thing looks weirdly clean. even if it wasn't based on a very dusty/grainy looking show it would still look too bright and HD. makes it look corny.

, Saturday, 20 November 2021 20:19 (two years ago) link

it's fun, mostly carried by the charisma of the principal three actors. gets too grimdark at the end, I guess that's the times. and the character who turns up in the last fives minutes is fuckin' abysmal.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 December 2021 23:50 (two years ago) link

I've never seen Cowboy Bebop, the cartoon or this show, but I don't quite understand what's up with networks green-lighting notoriously fraught or difficult projects based on reputable source material (this, Y: The Last Man), allowing them to be fucked up despite such solid source material as guidance, and then cancelling with extreme prejudice. Like, a live-action adaptation of a cult anime classic is such a seemingly bad idea on its face, so ... why bother?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 10 December 2021 00:55 (two years ago) link

i presume whichever exec was the shepherd on these projects saw their star dim and didn't have the juice to push them forward to a second year

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Friday, 10 December 2021 04:08 (two years ago) link

Repeating myself from FB:

It's notable that the 'lost session' teaser absolutely nailed it in terms of tone, editing, etc, quick, witty, goofy and serious at the same time -- if they had carried this through the rest of the series then things would be better (not perfect -- my biggest story complaints were Jet's new rather clunky backstory and turning the whole Vicious/Julia thing into an unneeded running B plot instead of it just surfacing via a couple of episodes in the original, though I did like the standalone flashback episode well enough). Also, nothing against Alex Hassell per se but besides the unnecessarily convoluted Vicious backstory this time out, he just doesn't LOOK like Vicious, who is supposed to be absolutely beautifully evil. Hassell's got too rough a face for the character.

Still, can't argue that Yoko Kanno's music was always on point -- though to turn it around, I honestly think that they got in their heads that 'bebop' was meant to represent the entire sound/aesthetic of the whole series rather than it being a signifier -- the fact that they felt compelled to create this whole jazz club element as a key part of the series was pretty unnecessary!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 10 December 2021 04:51 (two years ago) link

guess my levels of expectation are lower than most as i really enjoyed this.
loved the whole steampunk vibe of it.
thought the whole world building/cgi thing looked great.
yeah, it got grimdark (great phrase !) in last episodes, but that was inevitable.
think it had a lot more legs to it for a second season.
feels weird how quickly netflix have pulled the plug on it.

note : had no idea re the anime source, so have no idea who turns up in the last scene.
