aiui, there are two potential routes - libel (the information is untrue and defamatory) and data protection (personal identifying information being misused through leaked publication). The former is highly contentious and unlikely, imo, to go anywhere unless the party settles to get it out of the way. The latter is more of a problem - but people are getting very excised about multi-million-Pound payouts when the reality is likely to be a lot less catastrophic.

Is there a link to something that isn't confusing on this. The link above and the twitter thread seem to presume you already know about it all and have opinions to match. Not so good for anyone who's tuned this whole thing out and is none the wiser

probably more chance of a frozen shaft of urine taking Starmer out of the game than Labour going bankrupt, but I will keep praying every day.

Would it also be true to say that the contents of WhatsApp conversations etc are not the private property of the individuals in the chat if the devices they used to have the chat were furnished to them as part of their jobs? Because I cannot imagine Iain McNichol paying for his own phone etc.

I think it’s a moot point if they got caught out by emailing the archive to themselves on their LP email account, by which I assume that archive becomes the party’s property?

But yeah, I assume that anything I do on my work devices can be seen by my employer, it’s their equipment.

I mean, it’s surprising how easy it is to not chat shit about colleagues when you’re busy doing the work you are contracted to do, right?

xps I haven't seen any particularly useful articles.

I would guess that even if it's the property of the organisation, failing to keep it secure is the issue. The stronger case would likely be people who'd registered complaints and had their names shared unredacted.

Yeah, wonder how all of this crosses over with GDPR.

Btw, Lab party in deep shit financially is a story the Telegraph has often run over the years (before twitter it wouldn't have been a thing I'd pay attention to)

I really regret being a member of this party and even giving them an additional donation for their election fighting fund after what has come out in the wash, never again in my life is a political party getting a fucking penny (nor a vote!) off me.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jul/24/russia-report-uk-intelligence-services-moscow-mi5-mi6

Consider the following highly topical example. The potential break-up of Britain that might have resulted from the 2014 Scottish referendum is axiomatically not in the interest of the UK and is also a major problem for UK national security. It therefore has to be a concern to MI5, not least because breaking up the UK is obviously also in the interest of a hostile power such as Russia. The large political constraint is obvious. A majority in Scotland could have voted for it – and may yet do so. The agencies’ role here is obviously immensely delicate, but it is hard to argue that they should just do nothing.

Martin Kettle having a normal one and seemingly suggesting our secret services need to consider Scottish nationalism as a branch of domestic terrorism that is a threat to the state, maybe that is my bad reading comprehension and I'm on my second beer, but it's sure what it sounds like to me!

It seems weird that an outspoken personality (with penachant for stirring things up?) is able to keep something like this under wraps for a long time with no outwards signs whatsoever?

anvil, Saturday, 25 July 2020 08:43 (three years ago) link

I would assume either he's had a full on breakdown, he's doing it for the notoriety/attention or he's really trying to piss off his manager, who's also Jewish. But also, if it quacks like a duck for hours on end...

Also no one, let alone an account with half a million followers, should be able to go on a ten hour antisemitic rant without Twitter lifting a finger to stop it.

Labour are angling to get RT taken off air.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-53510838

I’d guess the main reason it hasn’t is that getting rid of a channel with, iirc, an average audience of 1300 isn’t worth the inevitable tit-for-tat expulsion of the BBC Russia service but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Interestingly, the government is supposedly mulling over a requirement similar to the US for lobbyists on behalf of foreign interests to register. I can’t see it happening tbh, as I can’t imagine anyone actually wants to lift that rock, but it would be delightful for a certain former Prime Minister to have to come clean about who pays him.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 25 July 2020 10:35 (three years ago) link

I'm guessing Fishing TV has an incredibly loyal fanbase who will watch it for hours on end and they've got the advertising market absolutely nailed.

The only thing I've ever seen from Russia Today is that clip where Simon Danczuk tries to ignore a belly dancer for several minutes.
