I can no longer imagine feeling bad for kanye and I've felt that way for some time tbh

people shouldn't take Elon Musk seriously either but alas we live in a society where being born rich is continued a great virtue which allows you to essentially invent your own reality where you can just dismiss every real problem as a hoax

i can't help but feel a little badly for ye, since he's surrounded by enablers and his only family is america's pre-eminent group of fame-obsessed narcissists

it was pretty weird when he was forced at gunpoint to marry Kim K

that was weird

Also weird how they kept playing "White Wedding" throughout the entire ceremony

Kate, re: mental health, you work hard to try to take care of yourself. Kanye pretty clearly thinks taking his meds and/or ensuring his prescriptions are actually working isn’t worth the time.

Loving the news either going with confused, bad faith readings or just consciously lying w/r/t the Harriet Tubman quote.

i do work hard to try and take care of myself! i also have a lot of people i trust who care about me and support me and have been very patient with me, so when i start thinking i should start randomly cold-turkeying my meds because clearly they aren't working, the people who care about me persuade me to hang on until i can actually see a professional to evaluate my meds even if it _is_ a two month wait, and i agree because i remember what happened when i cold-turkeyed the benzos.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 17:25 (three years ago) link

I know that from your posts on 77. I can see how you might’ve misread my post.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:09 (three years ago) link

Ye probably gets bored of his meds on the regular and just forgets they’re even in the medicine cabinet

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:10 (three years ago) link

i don't think i was misreading it! i'm just not inclined to judge anybody else for how they handle their mental health issues until or unless it directly affects me.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:12 (three years ago) link

Let’s just say I have personal reasons that cause me to have extremely low patience with people who refuse to attend to their diagnoses when care is available and effective. It’s not as if Ye is a victim of our country’s fucked up healthcare system.

Kanye is a tragic story predominantly of his own making is how i break it down to an extent.

I just want to see how Bret Easton Ellis will spin this into
Kanye being persecuted by “the left”. It’s awful reading, but I was genuinely mesmerized by Ellis’ impassioned, horrifically misguided attempt to rehabilitate the public image of a fellow narcissist/artistic collaborator in his book WHITE (!)

i don't disagree. just like i don't disagree that, you know, wesley snipes listening to those people who told him that he didn't have to pay taxes, that's ultimately his responsibility. i just also see, when i look at kanye, someone who has spent the last fifteen years in the panopticon. i have a hard time seeing a timeline in which things worked out better for him. there's lots of people who have their heads screwed on better than kanye right now, that's for sure, but i wonder if that'll still be the case five years from now. i wonder how someone who's had the experiences kanye has had is supposed to _not_ go completely fucking batshit crazy in 2020.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 19:30 (three years ago) link

i agree that things happen for a reason and i have some real sadness that Kanye - artistically, publicly, politically - has mostly disappeared so far up his own ass. At the same time, he and his family have chosen to be complicit with the Trump administration with the intent of getting federal favors in exchange for celebrity shine and, regardless of how righteous the asks they've made are, complicity with this administration means you can fuck off imo.

i think that there is a particular _sort_ of "genius" that is celebrated in people like kanye in a way that is essentially brutal and traumatic, those expectations. and i, being white, i can't speak to the _role_ of blackness in that trauma, but i see a lot of other "geniuses" who seem to get really incredibly fucked up by it in a way that Untold Riches and Superstardom really oughtn't do.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 20:09 (three years ago) link

like, i'm not defending kanye, the man means nothing to me. it just makes me uneasy when the narrative starts and ends at "he is a Bad Person", what the fuck is this world where all the people who are important and powerful are Bad People?

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 20:14 (three years ago) link

I agree with that, I'm just not sure why we should give him the benefit of the doubt over against other Bad People who are likely struggling with their own cast of demons.

pomenitul, Monday, 20 July 2020 20:18 (three years ago) link

Wtf!? Why tear down Harriet Tubman of all people? I’m not sure if I’m missing context to what he said before or after - though I’m sure it was on the same level of stupid - but I don’t see how it would benefit his “political campaign” at all. I don’t see how it would even benefit his album sales. I don’t see what the endgame is here but he keeps tarnishing his legacy.

West-Musk 2020

pomenitul, Monday, 20 July 2020 20:38 (three years ago) link

He keeps making it hard to separate art from the artist. Why should I care about the good ideas he once had, the great albums and songs, his most personal lyrics documenting his rise to fame, if I know it ends with a series of bullshit after bullshit after bullshit. I keep expecting a redemption arc from him but I’m not sure it will come anymore.

At this point I’m not angry anymore I’m just very disappointed.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 20 July 2020 20:43 (three years ago) link

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Monday, 20 July 2020 20:47 (three years ago) link

If that’s the case then it’s actually kind of in character for him? He sort of expresses the same theme in “all falls down”.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 20 July 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

Examples:

We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us. We trying to buy back our 40 acres. And for that paper, look how low we a'stoop. Even if you in a Benz, you still a n***a in a coop/coupe

I say fuck the police, that's how I treat em. We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom. We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em. Things we buy to cover up what's inside. Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth. That's why shortys hollering "where the ballas' at?" Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack. And a white man get paid off of all of that.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 20 July 2020 20:50 (three years ago) link

Even if that’s the idea behind it, which isn’t really that controversial, I don’t like that he feels the need to shit on Harriet Tubman’s legacy to make a point.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 20 July 2020 20:58 (three years ago) link

This is the first video I've seen that gives more context. It seems like he was going for what Whiney said (although focusing on the ownership of a few major corporations is a bit idk) but it still seems pretty strange, with stuff about how "you don't see the real power" and apparently concluding (?) that it all needs to change with him ending up on the boards of Adidas and Gap.

Here’s more context to what Kanye said. pic.twitter.com/Xv4mMFYqeg
