Instant vote for Backxwash. Not only is it amazing but both members of Black Dresses have finally (albeit via features and production work) made the shortlist.

I'll have to find a new favorite since Men I Trust didn't make the cut.

geoffreyess, Thursday, 16 July 2020 02:24 (three years ago) link

that was a surprise yeah

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 16 July 2020 02:27 (three years ago) link

I LOVE the Men I Trust album

brimstead, Thursday, 16 July 2020 03:05 (three years ago) link

I'm confused. Are 2019 releases eligible?

pomenitul, Thursday, 16 July 2020 03:12 (three years ago) link

me too wait a minute

brimstead, Thursday, 16 July 2020 03:13 (three years ago) link

Voted Backxwash but Lido Pimienta is really good.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 July 2020 03:28 (three years ago) link

I'm confused. Are 2019 releases eligible?

I assume it goes back to august 2019 or whatever given when the shortlisting happens

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 16 July 2020 03:40 (three years ago) link

It’s June to June, I think. The Pantayo album is amazing, produced by Alaska from YT//ST. Lido’s album was co-produced by my bff and bassist and I’m thrilled and proud about how great it is. Obv I’m rooting for Backxwash but objectively as far as I can tell Kaytranada is the best of these

Also my drummer’s daughter is on the cover of the US Girls album lol Canada

wet pockets (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 16 July 2020 04:30 (three years ago) link

clearly going to have to check out the Pantayo then!

imago, Thursday, 16 July 2020 09:44 (three years ago) link

Yeah Pantayo is great. It's different from YT/ST obv but has the same spike to it. Honestly imago I think your fave record of these 10 would be the nêhiyawak, it's so special, it blows my mind that it's a debut, it is so so wild.

@ pomenitul, Klô Pelgag just came out less than a month ago and wasn't eligible.

wet pockets (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 16 July 2020 11:48 (three years ago) link

I just listened to the Pantayo, it is indeed great! Really good songwriting on top of the unusual rock sonics. Will check out nêhiyawak shortly...

imago, Thursday, 16 July 2020 11:52 (three years ago) link

nêhiyawak album really picks up a few tracks in - 'secret' is lovely

imago, Thursday, 16 July 2020 12:45 (three years ago) link

Thanks, fgti, that makes sense. I found it puzzling because almost every shortlisted title came out this year.

pomenitul, Thursday, 16 July 2020 12:57 (three years ago) link

Yeah this album maintains a really good level right through, ty

Will check out Pelgag soon, she's getting a lot of Weyes Blood comparisons so I was always going to tbh

imago, Thursday, 16 July 2020 12:59 (three years ago) link

Klô Pelgag seems to have achieved some cross-linguistic success, and her latest album happens to be quite good.

Picked up on this due to your French Vocalists (?) thread revive, it's really good!

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 16 July 2020 15:40 (three years ago) link

I arranged tracks 4, 5 and 7 :) glad you like it, love that album

wet pockets (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:36 (three years ago) link

I hear they're gonna rename it the poolaris prize in honor of fgti

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:37 (three years ago) link

:)

pomenitul, Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:38 (three years ago) link

Haha. Well arranged, OP! :) It's a beautiful 'little' album.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:44 (three years ago) link

I love 'À l'ombre des cyprès' in particular, so big-up fgti.

pomenitul, Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:47 (three years ago) link

^^^this was the track when I listened earlier

imago, Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:52 (three years ago) link

That one and the one prior to it, 'J'aurai les cheveux longs', are the brace of the album for me.

I think it's pretty clear who'll win the Polaris 2021 now :)

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link

Kaytranada

carin' (map), Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

the Polaris shortlist release is one of my favorite events of the year because I know I'm always about to be exposed to so much dope music I'm not plugged into yet

going to go into a music hole for the next week to dig into all this

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Thursday, 16 July 2020 19:02 (three years ago) link

might be fun to poll the longlist next year instead to see how it compares to the jury selection

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 16 July 2020 19:08 (three years ago) link

Sampled a few tracks from each album here and there, ended up listening to the Backxwash in its entirety.

pomenitul, Sunday, 19 July 2020 22:38 (three years ago) link

helps that it's only like 20 mins

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Monday, 20 July 2020 00:37 (three years ago) link

Kaytranada

Very pleased to have found Pantayo and Backxwash through here.

two months pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

can't not vote with my heart (lido) even though she already won

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 01:26 (three years ago) link

So grateful Pantayo was included, such an amazing album. I'd put "Kaingin" on any shortlist of my favorite songs at this point.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 15 October 2020 00:01 (three years ago) link

wow @ Witch Prophet!

this is kind of a Bajka + Radio Citizen + FlyLo '08 fresh punch. i couldn't have asked for more rn, really hitting the spot

where do all these unsold amps go? (gaudio), Thursday, 15 October 2020 18:09 (three years ago) link

btw if Caribou or US Girls wins this it will be the biggest disgrace in Canada's cultural history

Chip-vill-A (imago), Thursday, 15 October 2020 18:45 (three years ago) link

nothing worse than artists getting retrospective props for the much better music they used to make, after making really mediocre albums

Chip-vill-A (imago), Thursday, 15 October 2020 18:46 (three years ago) link

well there's a few things worse but

Chip-vill-A (imago), Thursday, 15 October 2020 18:46 (three years ago) link

I love that Caribou album so, so much in the context of his discography! US Girls is the weakest of the last three amazing albums tbh but it's still A+ imo

Objectively I think the "best" album here is... the nêhiyawak album. It's crazy, crazy good, I can't believe this band just shat out "the best album XTC never made" as their first offering.

flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 15 October 2020 19:38 (three years ago) link

it is really good yeah, did I say upthread? that and the Pantayo were great discoveries

celebration and announcement underway

congrats to the ILX-appointed jury!

There it is :)

Chip-vill-A (imago), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 08:39 (three years ago) link

Can you imagine something even approaching this wild even getting on the Mercury shortlist let alone winning?
