it's Batumi, right?

bravo, right off the bat!

this thread never fails

Temporary Erogenous Zone (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 14 July 2020 19:21 (three years ago) link

wow, never got even close to any of these, but the single Turkish-type minaret gave me something very concrete to work with: sea port city in a non-muslim country in the Eastern Mediterranean or Black Sea. actually checked and discarded Batumi at first (but of course you wouldn’t pick a photo that displayed the actual city centre) - but when I searched for the minaret-golden onion-shaped dome combination Batumi was the top result, and then that distinctive church tower sealed the deal.

oh, it’s a clock tower turned boutique hotel apparently.

"clock tower turned boutique hotel" I'm sold

I want to say Kandahar, other than the colouring is maybe too light. The low rise layout points there though

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 11:07 (three years ago) link

Kandahar indeed!

what a place eh?

rumpy riser (ogmor), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:53 (three years ago) link

I thought Kandahar straightaway, then had a quick look at first image that came up

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_Kandahar#/media/File:Aerial_view_of_a_section_of_Kandahar_in_2013.jpg

but both of these look darker and not as sandy as yours so I wasn't 100 on it but thought it close to enough!

I will say: is it in Asia? just to get the ball rolling

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Saturday, 1 August 2020 09:43 (three years ago) link

31st is in Asia, and 27th isn't!

cherry blossom, Saturday, 1 August 2020 09:48 (three years ago) link

oh yeah, I meant the 31st, sorry. East Asia, no? (but that will probably all from me)

not a clue.

ominous looking and disused Eastern European train station?

Temporary Erogenous Zone (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 August 2020 17:21 (three years ago) link

I'm struck by how it's all very clean, with no litter or visible graffiti.

There's some characters/a logo on the modern building in the background on the right hand side of the last photo, but I'm not sure what to make of them - are they Japanese maybe?

Definitely wondering about Asia, but struggling to guess a country even.

brain (krakow), Friday, 21 August 2020 17:44 (three years ago) link

In the first photo there's a motorway-esque road in the background with green gantry signs, if anyone knows which countries use that colour for those.

There also looks like what could be two flags on the right in front of the road, but sadly no wind to display them. Looks like they might be white and red, maybe blue too? My brain keeps filling them in as British flags, but that seems like nonsense.

ah, interesting. seem to be characters that are either not roman (nor Cyrillic) or if they are perhaps with diacritics not usually found in European languages

Could be Vietnamese, Hanoi?

Those look like US green highway signs in the first picture and honestly everything about this looks like a desolate NJ Transit station except the wooden slats on the train tracks

this is USA for sure

The shape of the buildings feels like New Jersey but that obelisky thing in the first picture is making me consider Massachusetts.

Lots of clues (poverty, light skin-tones, ex-communist-style architecture) that indicate the poorer parts of Europe or west/central Asia. The most intriguing clue is how flat the landscape is, so most of the Balkans are out. Looks more like the steppes than a littoral, since it is so bereft of vegetation.
