I think he was probably talking about H1N1, except he's too stupid to realize he has to say the thing he's talking about first, and what he's saying likely isn't true, so that's another reason why it's hard to follow.

this is evidence that continued pressure from grassroots climate orgs (and other parts of the left) works. that's in part because those campaigns have been pretty well-run and sustained, and in part because the recipient is a frail old man seems to be invulnerable to attacks that he is socialism in disguise (cf. nixon could go to china).

I wish people would stop saying shit like this. Everyone tries to enact their platform once they are elected. They often aren't successful, which is built into the design on the federal government; everything is set up in opposition to each other in order to promote compromise and slow down change. This doesn't change the fact that Presidents, including Trump, try to enact the platforms they ran on.

but yes, i fear for the future. the progressive wonderland of 2009-10 briefly featured a democratic supermajority in the senate, too. this time around we might have *knock on wood* 53-54. I'm glad that biden's team allowed themselves to be pushed toward a much stronger policy. before this task force, they were advocating zero net emissions by 2050. now that's 2035. before it was a $1.7T over 10 years, now it's $2T over 4 years - that's almost 3 times more per year, and over a period of time that actually covers the presidential term rather than a wishlist for future fascist spending.

these are good things, significantly better than before. it's not the plan that bernie sanders would have proposed, that's for sure. but it's probably getting close to what elizabeth warren would have landed on. and regardless, yes of course they will be significantly watered down, potentially destroyed, during the negotiations with the republicans, everyone knows that.

i do think that the political climate, both in the senate and also across the country, is a little different than in 2009-10. it seems easy to predict that the republicans will unanimously stonewall anything that has to do with a "green new deal". but i don't know - they may be in for an asskicking this november, and whoever is left will face the choice between going down in their own racist flames or compromising with democrats and going down in the racist flames of their supporters. along with that, democrats on climate change will face a decision between following all the proper procedures and traditions and waiting another 10-20 years to get another supermajority in the senate so they can actually pass a real green new deal without it being watered down, or they can pull a mitch mcconnell and get procedurally evil to accomplish what needs to happen

Being unable to pass something is not the same thing as straight-up lying to you to secure your vote. If you think these people on both sides of the aisle are straight-up lying to you to get your vote, look at what the timelines of what they've tried to do once they've gotten into office. The majority of Obama's "broken promises" were attempts that failed or line items that were actively thwarted by other branches of government; ditto GWB. You will find the same pattern with GHWB and Clinton and Carter and Reagan and Trump. All of them tried to enact their platforms; it's borderline stupid to assume they won't given that these are the policies they are trying to enact.

There are fundamental differences between being unable to enact your platform, trying to enact your platform and failing, and making up shit people want to hear so you can get into office and do whatever you want, even if the end result is the same. Not every bad result is the outcome of malicious intent and it's wholly unhelpful to ascribe it when it isn't there. It's not about "trusting politicians"; it's about looking at the history, following the actions of everyone involved, and realizing that none of this shit exists in a perfectly-formed vacuum.
