you don't have to answer that, apparently permanent residents are not foreign nationals in the relevant context of campaign donations

Cornyn successfully avoids inspiring the visceral disgust at seeing or hearing him that Cruz does.

He's pretty disgusting

He is but you have to really know him to hate him (president of his high school's George Wallace 1968 street team!), whereas I'm pretty sure everyone who has laid eyes on Ted Cruz instinctively distrusted and despised him.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Monday, 13 July 2020 06:22 (three years ago) link

Yeah he looks kind of avuncular.

Cornyn? There are times he strikes this kind of rictus rubber-face grin that reminds me of Jim Carrey playing the Grinch.

predictions on the inevitable Trump tweet on the Redskins name change? I'm thinking something like "Washington REDSKINS is a proud name with a long and very successful tradition. Sad to see Lil Danny Snyder give in to the PC mob. GO COWBOYS!"

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 13 July 2020 14:38 (three years ago) link

I fucking hate these political solicitations. I donated to Jaime Harrison in SC, then within the hour got two emails asking for more money. There was an option to reduce email volume, so I selected that, and still got a third email within the next hour. So, three in the same day - hours, really - after already donating. I immediately unsubscribed and there was a field to write why, so I basically wrote "I already know who you are and that Lindsey Graham is an asshole; that is why I donated. Plus ... I literally just donated. So leave me alone and trust that if I ever feel like donating again I will."

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 July 2020 14:50 (three years ago) link

I mean it's how they work - idk any politician whose solicitation doesn't involve shitting emails out every two hours. regardless of what you already gave.

Jaime's just amuse me because of the titles. Whereas Joe Biden's are all "give me $5, asshole", Jaime's are all "Sorry, Neanderthal" or "Bad news, Neanderthal", or "I am awake, I can't sleep, so I am emailing you, Neanderthal", or "What color do you think I should paint my house, Neanderthal"?

I'm contributing monthly though so I don't feel guilty just deleting em.

I’ve got a spam email account just for pol donations

I know it’s probably as much of a long shot as Mitch but my god seeing Lynsey put out to pasture would be massively satisfying

Dem fundraising emails are definitely obnoxious but the Trump ones are actively creepy, it's always something like

From: Don Jr.

Hi Jim :( Daddy's really mad at me again. I promised him you were going to contribute to his campaign...I even imagined myself triumphantly presenting the Patriot List to Daddy with YOUR NAME at the top. He even told me personally about the 6X MATCH...I said Dad, you're crazy, Jim is a real American, he's proud to stand against Antifa and the fake news, you don't need to do the 6X MATCH....but he insisted. I just want to know, what happened? I thought you believed in my Dad and in this country. What should I tell him before the deadline of JULY 14, 2020 6:00 PM CST??

frogbs, Monday, 13 July 2020 15:42 (three years ago) link

I signed up to get a ticket to a Trump rally (which I know won't impact attendance due to overselling), but he keeps sending surveys and I keep taking them and trolling him.

tehy're all questions like

DO YOU THINK THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS

A) GOOD???!!
B) BAD!

DO YOU THINK SLEEPY JOE IS

A) STUPID
B) BAD
C) OTHER

The cover of that Don Jr. book is awesome. What is he even doing on it? (And which Democrat is defending the indefensible, do we have to read it to find out?)

Don Jr. does this chest flex thing that makes him look like a puffing prancing preening animal.

I find it perplexing that Fauci does not loudly resign. Not only is it counterproductive if not outright dangerous to be in a position where the president can reportedly restrict his appearances and comments, even aside from that this is a president that consistently undercuts and contradicts his advice at every turn. Anyone that appreciates Fauci now would appreciate Fauci wherever he was, and he might have even more of an impact freed from the constraints and abuse from the Asshole in charge. How effective can he be when the person in charge of executing his recommendations is both muzzling him and encouraging the opposite of his advice?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 July 2020 16:01 (three years ago) link

Fauci's main job right now is to convince Republicans that this thing is real & dangerous and I respect him for swallowing his ego to do so

frogbs, Monday, 13 July 2020 16:07 (three years ago) link

β€œPublic spokesperson for infectious disease response” is not his real job. He’s the widely respected director of NIAID, has been for decades, and has an organization and an extramural community of hundreds of grant-funded researchers supportive of his leadership. Resigning wouldn’t dent Trump and would hamper the work of his colleagues.

all cats are beautiful (silby), Monday, 13 July 2020 16:10 (three years ago) link

I'm sure there are a lot of government folks right now thinking "Six months to go..."

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 13 July 2020 16:11 (three years ago) link

If Fauci resigned, the GOP line would be that his opinion is invalid as he no longer has access to the most up-to-date information.

henry s, Monday, 13 July 2020 16:13 (three years ago) link

yeah he's in a shitty spot. he's allowed to do media appearances it seems as long as they aren't official or only via podcasts and crap. I hope he's getting through to some Republicans but I honestly don't know. And the longer he's there getting crapped on by Trump it introduces this doubt about scientists that is bound to wreck any vaccination effort when and if a vaccine shows up; I hadn't really thought through all the implications of this until Kathleen Sibelius said this:

"Kathleen Sebelius, who served as secretary of Health and Human Services under former President Barack Obama, told CNN efforts to discredit Fauci and other scientists are "potentially very, very dangerous" as the US and other countries work toward a coronavirus vaccine.

"I think people want to know from the scientists that the vaccine is safe, that it is effective, that it will not do more harm than good," she told Blitzer on "The Situation Room."

"And if the public scientists have been discredited, if the President says 'don't believe them, you can't listen to them, they're often wrong,' we have then undermined a national vaccination campaign which is an essential step to bringing this horrible period to an end.""

Fauci remains in control of the vaccine search stuff IIUC so has concluded that he is better inside the tent being pissed on, which, fair enough, thank you for your service.

Trump's campaign is spending 13% of its Facebook digital advertising budget on Texas.

To what extent does any progressive / liberal / Democrat need to "work" with the Lincoln Project?

I think I can enjoy whatever chaos they are able to sow without endorsing them as people or it as an organization or whatever. Let them to their thing (because hey, free country and all). I don't need to like them personally to accept that they may peel off some support from DT.

That said, I doubt they're having much impact. The vast majority of Republicans are on the Trump Train. There's a tiny little sliver of NeverTrumpers who are in conversation with themselves.

Decent humans were already convinced that Trump is a vile piece of shit and didn't need slickly produced ads to convince them further.

What am I missing?
