I thought Joe Biden's ads were annoying.

Jaime Harrison's (Lindsay Graham's opponent) outright sound stalkery.

"sorry Rob but we are emailing you again"
"sorry for the late email but I just couldn't sleep"

just another "the president fucking sucks, you all" story, but i've remixed it a bit for dramatic emphasis

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

Callers on President Trump in recent weeks have come to expect what several allies and advisers describe as a “woe-is-me” preamble.

The president rants about the deadly coronavirus destroying “the greatest economy,” one he claims to have personally built. He laments the unfair “fake news” media, which he vents never gives him any credit. And he bemoans the “sick, twisted” police officers in Minneapolis, whose killing of an unarmed black man in their custody provoked the nationwide racial justice protests that have confounded the president.

Gone, say these advisers and confidants, many speaking on the condition of anonymity to detail private conversations, are the usual pleasantries and greetings.

Instead, Trump often launches into a monologue placing himself at the center of the nation’s turmoil. The president has cast himself in the starring role of the blameless victim — of a deadly pandemic, of a stalled economy, of deep-seated racial unrest, all of which happened to him rather than the country.

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

“Every guy that talks to him, the first half of the conversation is, ‘Woe is me,’ ” said one of the outside operatives, speaking anonymously to share private details. “They’re all saying, ‘You’ve got to snap out of it. You’re the president. Presidents are supposed to deal with crises.’ But he’s fixated.”

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

We had the greatest economy in the world,” Trump said in an Oval Office meeting last month, talking about how good the statistics were before the coronavirus, said one adviser. An outside adviser in frequent touch with the White House offered a similar recollection, saying that Trump simply keeps on repeating, “I had this great economy and they made me shut it down.”

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

Other top White House advisers — including Hope Hicks and Dan Scavino — have also sought to buttress Trump’s mood with events they thought he would enjoy, such as celebrating truckers by bringing 18-wheelers onto the White House South Lawn in mid-April or creating social media videos that feature throngs of his adoring fans, according to aides. That's right, they had to create an event with 18-wheelers to put president toddler in a good mood before bedtime.

The president’s mood had also improved as he focused on the fight over whether to rename or tear down statues named after Confederate generals and other controversial historical figures. Aides say he believes a battle over such symbols will help him politically. he's a fucking racist!

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

We've seen many iterations of the "Trump is petulant and whiny and narcissistic" story. Whenever I see them I wonder if they are seen and understood by anyone who isn't already convinced. Trump doesn't read the Washington Post; I suspect no one around him is allowed to either. No Trump voters read the Washington Post, and they wouldn't believe anything in it even if they did.

Are there persuadable undecided voters who will read that story and say "ah, NOW I get why he is unfit to lead!"

LinkedIn Park (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 10 July 2020 16:29 (three years ago) link

presumably a major section of WaPo readership never tires of those stories as it feeds the permarage they are hopelessly addicted to

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Friday, 10 July 2020 16:32 (three years ago) link

i don't think the purpose of those stories is to persuade voters one direction or another (actually, it would be bad if that was the primary intent, if it's in the News section rather than op-ed! before i get flamed). i think it's just a periodic reminder to everyone that he's a colossal childish dipshit. it's weird to consistently get a dripfeed of such "news", but it would also be weird if no one reported it. it's a weird fucking conundrum! but that's just a minor side effect of having a weird fucking president

Karl Malone, Friday, 10 July 2020 16:37 (three years ago) link

(oops, forgot to add the rest of the "before i get flamed" comment, but maybe i'll just leave that dangling there)

Karl Malone, Friday, 10 July 2020 16:38 (three years ago) link

YMP, are you arguing that one of the two or three biggest newspapers in the US should not document the fact that the US president is a jabbering moron with the emotional grip-strength of a two-year-old? Because it lacks partisan value?

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 10 July 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link

presumably a major section of WaPo readership never tires of those stories as it feeds the permarage they are hopelessly addicted to

not to defend the permarage, and certainly not to defend the particular kind of permarage/obsession that focuses in on all the least important details (what melania is doing, covfefe, whether or not trump is actually in a failing state of cognitive ability and can no longer form sentences out loud), but perhaps once Canada is led by a Trump-like administration and half of your fellow citizens lap it up like hitler youth, you'll have a bit of sympathy for the people who are hopelessly addicted to new information on the thing that has ruined their lives

Karl Malone, Friday, 10 July 2020 16:55 (three years ago) link

it never ceases to amaze how thoroughly the Right has built up AOC as this all-powerful demogorgon. I saw a TV ad last night against Cal Cunningham, the extremely MOR milquetoast dude trying to unseat Thom Tillis in the Senate, that OF COURSE prominently featured her. because yes, if centrist Cal Cunningham is elected to the goddamn Senate to represent North Carolina, he is definitely going to be the minion of a one-term House member from the Bronx.

No, I am not arguing that. I am actually curious! Like, I genuinely wish to know (a) to what extent people's minds can be changed by information and (b) whether anyone's minds are actually changing. It's not a rhetorical question but an interrogative one.

LinkedIn Park (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 10 July 2020 17:02 (three years ago) link

to find the person whose mind can potentially be changed, we first need to take a journalistic journey to a small town in rural Pennsylvania. Maude's Diner was opened in 1984, in the heart of Reagan country, and some of those first patrons are still there as I step through th-
