So beautiful there! We were going to take my nephew on a popular sand dune ride attraction but we found out they're putting 25 ppl in (open air) vehicles together and even with masks that was way too much.

Things are looking grim in TC iirc? Hope yr folks are doing okay & stay that way.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Thursday, 9 July 2020 17:36 (three years ago) link

i think to the extent today's ruling sets a bad precedent about oversight it's bad. but in terms of election stuff these both feel true

Hot take. Not sure I 100% believe this one, but worthy of tweeting.

Congress going through Trump's tax records and the media spending a ton of time on that story pre-election might be better for Trump than the alternatives, which is focus on COVID, the economy and the protests.

— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) July 9, 2020

Dramatically overstates Democratic ability to control the media. If thousands are dying from coronavirus and the economy is in shambles it doesn't matter what Democrats are prioritizing, that's the story.

Holy shit would it be awesome if they held it in a zoo. There's a high school right by here right next to a zoo. Apparently you could sometimes hear things like elephant trumpets and lion roars during gym class. Imagine that racket behind Trump on stage. Though you do run the risk of Don Jr. shooting something, I guess.

We spent a little bit of time in Traverse City last summer, and boy was it pretty. Especially a little further out, like Sleeping Bear Dunes, Glen Arbor, Leelanau ... Maybe if we end up going on a trip this summer we'll finally hit the UP.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:07 (three years ago) link

thousands of Covid deaths are not gonna be overshadowed by this. it's gonna be held up in courts forever just like everything else Trump related. people will forget by Sunday.

frogbs, Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:13 (three years ago) link

right, I think Silver is way overstating the electoral importance of what MSNBC happens to be talking about. I could certainly see them and CNN breathlessly covering the Trump tax story and somewhat back-burnering COVID but it's not going to make any appreciable difference on the election.

basically where I'm at now is that it's very difficult to imagine Trump winning if the pandemic is in roughly the same or a worse place than it is right now, and it's very difficult to imagine that not being the case.

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

what revelations would come from his financial documents? would they top his entire family's 50 year history of tax fraud that was already extensively reported by the NYT last year, and which no one *checks notes* yes absolutely no one cared about or ever mentioned again on any show, any book, any magazine article, or any forum post anywhere in the universe, ever again?

Karl Malone, Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:36 (three years ago) link

because it would be tough to top that one in terms of gamechangers

Karl Malone, Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:37 (three years ago) link

i guess to put it a different way: at this point, there's nothing we can learn about donald trump that will be surprising. we all know he's full of shit, and that he is in fact a giant piece of shit. inside and out, covered in it. all his supporters know that too. the ones that are delusional enough to not see that are QAnon people and/or lost causes. in a way, his awfulness has become predictable.

covid19 and the economy and his always escalating white supremacy, though, are things that are happening in the present that are still unpredictable and very important to pay attention to. they'll dominate. maybe there will be news of a couple other women he slept with and paid off through national enquirer or whatever. but no one cares about that shit any more. that was donald trump misbehaving on one of his good days, back when he hoped he would be on E! or perhaps a carson daly segment. but all of that of kind of gets ran over by "another 1000 people died today"

Karl Malone, Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:46 (three years ago) link

the obsession some ppl have with his tax returns has always been moronic, the world in which that could ever have mattered vanished with his election

the only way they could ever be relevant (in the sense the resitance people want them to be) is if they revealed prosecutable crimes that are prosecuted during his presidency. that ship/boat has sailed and was probably always magical thinking.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:48 (three years ago) link

they are completely irelevant in a "trial by media" sense when there's a pandemic happening.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 9 July 2020 18:48 (three years ago) link

and i tend to agree with the idea that if they were to become a story while he is president (they won't) it would help him rather than hurt him.

It's folly to expect different results, but there's the chance that actual proof, that is to say, receipts, for the sort of stuff alleged by Trump detractors might sway a few naysayers who complained about the lack of clear evidence for past accusations. There's also the further useful purpose of any tax return revelations of shenanigans perhaps putting a nail in the coffin of any future Lil Trump runs. Don Jr, Ivanka ...

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 July 2020 19:07 (three years ago) link

There's still a lot of ppl who aren't full Trumpers but think he's good for "the economy" or will overturn roe v Wade or whatever 1 or 2 issue bullshit they focus on and think the media just hates him cause they are "unfair" and hey all politicians are corrupt liars, surely if Trump was that awful and a criminal he'd be in jail and/or out of office by now, both sides yadda yadda…to whom maybe just maybe hard evidence of certain things in his taxes and financial records presented close to election would be final straw.

kinda funny how every Republican presidency's conclusion results in disastrous, almost unfixable destruction to the US. can't wait to see what the next Republican prez does to us.

By design. So that the next administration can be blamed for the mess it inherited.

It's clever, in a diabolical way. And it demonstrably works! Why should they abandon the strategy at its moment of triumph?

just another "the president fucking sucks, you all" story, but i've remixed it a bit for dramatic emphasis

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

Callers on President Trump in recent weeks have come to expect what several allies and advisers describe as a “woe-is-me” preamble.

The president rants about the deadly coronavirus destroying “the greatest economy,” one he claims to have personally built. He laments the unfair “fake news” media, which he vents never gives him any credit. And he bemoans the “sick, twisted” police officers in Minneapolis, whose killing of an unarmed black man in their custody provoked the nationwide racial justice protests that have confounded the president.

Gone, say these advisers and confidants, many speaking on the condition of anonymity to detail private conversations, are the usual pleasantries and greetings.

Instead, Trump often launches into a monologue placing himself at the center of the nation’s turmoil. The president has cast himself in the starring role of the blameless victim — of a deadly pandemic, of a stalled economy, of deep-seated racial unrest, all of which happened to him rather than the country.

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

“Every guy that talks to him, the first half of the conversation is, ‘Woe is me,’ ” said one of the outside operatives, speaking anonymously to share private details. “They’re all saying, ‘You’ve got to snap out of it. You’re the president. Presidents are supposed to deal with crises.’ But he’s fixated.”

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

We had the greatest economy in the world,” Trump said in an Oval Office meeting last month, talking about how good the statistics were before the coronavirus, said one adviser. An outside adviser in frequent touch with the White House offered a similar recollection, saying that Trump simply keeps on repeating, “I had this great economy and they made me shut it down.”

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.

Other top White House advisers — including Hope Hicks and Dan Scavino — have also sought to buttress Trump’s mood with events they thought he would enjoy, such as celebrating truckers by bringing 18-wheelers onto the White House South Lawn in mid-April or creating social media videos that feature throngs of his adoring fans, according to aides. That's right, they had to create an event with 18-wheelers to put president toddler in a good mood before bedtime.

The president’s mood had also improved as he focused on the fight over whether to rename or tear down statues named after Confederate generals and other controversial historical figures. Aides say he believes a battle over such symbols will help him politically. he's a fucking racist!

“The President’s message has been consistent: resilience, hope, and optimism", White House spokesman Judd Deere said in an email statement.
