once the ballads hit it's too late, but the disco pop stuff is great yeah

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 14:05 (three years ago) link

yeah the ballads are clunkers for sure. I'm on "Dream Street" now and the first 3 songs are also fire

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 9 July 2020 14:23 (three years ago) link

oh my god this synth breakdown at the end of "Pretty Boy" is sheer euphoria

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 9 July 2020 14:26 (three years ago) link

off the first album, 'come give your love to me' will def get a vote from me

my ballot is, again, already full, but i'm really considering doing this too, what a cool song

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 14:48 (three years ago) link

OK how the fuck am I supposed to make room for "Moist" and "SloLove"

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 July 2020 15:24 (three years ago) link

re: dream street: "don't stand another chance," "pretty boy," "fast girls," all great

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 15:58 (three years ago) link

"fast girls" is very proto-control

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 16:06 (three years ago) link

re: "black cat," i forgot, the video version is superior

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 16:16 (three years ago) link

i am kinda digging rediscovering Janet's ROCKIN THE FUCK OUT tracks,"Trust a Try" is fucking awesome

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 9 July 2020 16:40 (three years ago) link

oh man the remix poll is gonna be even harder than the main one

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 22:30 (three years ago) link

lol remembering how incredible it was to hear unbreakable for the first time

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 23:35 (three years ago) link

i *have* to vote for "dammn baby," that is a finely-layered piece of production

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 23:42 (three years ago) link

janet/jam/lewis 4ever

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 23:44 (three years ago) link

"shoulda known better," wow, ;_;

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 23:46 (three years ago) link

this may be beside tim's point about damita jo but "dammn baby" sorta realizes the idea of janet's last train to paris for me

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 23:47 (three years ago) link

which, really it's the jam & lewis version of mustardwave, but that's how it ends up for me regardless

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 23:54 (three years ago) link

oh my GOD "night"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 July 2020 23:59 (three years ago) link

how do i get everyone to vote for "night"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 10 July 2020 00:06 (three years ago) link

I remember five summers ago almost weeping when "No Sleeep" was so damn good.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 July 2020 00:12 (three years ago) link

Same.

Get the point? Good, let's dance with nunchaku. (Eric H.), Friday, 10 July 2020 00:19 (three years ago) link

Was just thinking that if "Feels So Right" had shown up in, say, the back half of Erykah Badu's "Cain't Use My Phone" EP I'd still be spinning it weekly to this day.

omg TIL Janet released a promo-only single for Pepsi in 1999 that I don't believe has been available anywhere else since?? I wouldn't say it's one of her all time best tracks but I def don't hate it and it came with a Masters At Work remix

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 10 July 2020 13:53 (three years ago) link

The post-All For You records aren't doing a whole lot for me these first time through them, but for what its worth, "So Much Betta" (from Discipline) is the only thing I've heard so far that I think is flat-out awful.

A White, White Gay (cryptosicko), Friday, 10 July 2020 22:39 (three years ago) link

*THIS first time through them

A White, White Gay (cryptosicko), Friday, 10 July 2020 22:40 (three years ago) link

oh that's how i feel about "this body" on 20 y.o.. terrible

i like "so much betta"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 10 July 2020 22:43 (three years ago) link

I used to hate “Rock With U” but I played it the other day and was like “wait this slams, what is happening”

shout-out to his family (DJP), Friday, 10 July 2020 23:48 (three years ago) link

yep

the bridge in "the great forever" is unreal

ufo, Saturday, 11 July 2020 00:54 (three years ago) link

I wish "Free Xone" had more xones. Xones to infinity.

geoffreyess, Saturday, 11 July 2020 01:45 (three years ago) link

how do i get everyone to vote for "night"

top ten for me, I promise

geoffreyess, Saturday, 11 July 2020 01:45 (three years ago) link

One rule
No rules

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 11 July 2020 04:23 (three years ago) link

Okay, after a couple of listens of “Janet Jackson” and “Dream Street” my takeaway is that the s/t is pretty unexceptional and generic but “Dream Street” is like... pretty great?? Which surprised me, bcz my impression was that they were both equally mediocre and filler-y.

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 11 July 2020 13:58 (three years ago) link

i still think dream street is a little patchy but again, the jesse johnson and marlon jackson tracks, whew

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 11 July 2020 13:59 (three years ago) link

also i have tried very hard but there's no way i'm ever going to like "two to the power of love"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 11 July 2020 14:00 (three years ago) link

it does not make the mistake the debut makes of wandering off into wispy ballad land

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 11 July 2020 14:01 (three years ago) link

Oh yeah it’s definitely patchy and imperfect and nowhere near the tier of Control thru Velvet Rope BUT it is a bigger improvement over the s/t than I thought, like in terms of sonic palette I can see a progression from Dream Street to Control, it’s not like a total schism like Underworld’s first 2 albums or something.

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 11 July 2020 18:05 (three years ago) link

also I love love LOVE “Pretty Boy”’s booming “ONE👏TWO👏ONE TWO THREE FOUR” followed by, like, a pleasant but fairly sedate synthesizer solo that is nowhere near as grand as one would expect from such a count-off

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 11 July 2020 18:11 (three years ago) link

listening to damita jo for the first time and "strawberry bounce"!!!

ufo, Saturday, 11 July 2020 23:42 (three years ago) link

It is a secret weapon

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 12 July 2020 04:11 (three years ago) link

Strawberry Bounce will likely be in the 20-25 range for me

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Sunday, 12 July 2020 13:49 (three years ago) link

Strawberry Bounce is probably going to just miss out on my list but there will be a handful of Damita Jo songs in there.

kitchen person, Sunday, 12 July 2020 14:29 (three years ago) link

Would it be fair to say that the general consensus is that 20YO is the nadir of her post-Control career?

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 12 July 2020 19:15 (three years ago) link

yes and i agree with the consensus

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 12 July 2020 19:29 (three years ago) link

Yeah, that's quite comfortably her weakest album.

kitchen person, Sunday, 12 July 2020 20:22 (three years ago) link

damita jo is her most consistent album. there are no duds! and, like, at least ten perfect songs

uberweiss, Sunday, 12 July 2020 20:39 (three years ago) link

"all nite (don't stop)", "warmth" and "slolove" will all be in my top 10 probs

uberweiss, Sunday, 12 July 2020 20:44 (three years ago) link

i would argue Velvet Rope as her MOST consistent album.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 12 July 2020 22:06 (three years ago) link

but some of this may be a "your favorite season of SNL" argument
except Janet is, you know, talented
