Not speaking on whoever was in that SC parade, but when you live on or near lakes, having a boat, even a beat up old metal fishing boat w an outboard, is pretty normal. If you have a truck and a few gallons of diesel, you have "the resources."

It has definitely been interesting to follow all the pandemic regs that address **boating** so specifically? Like the risk level of activities including "pontoon boating" which is just INCREDIBLY specific lol. I mean in theory going to the dock or the public boat launch, as long as you only go with ppl in your bubble, should be low-to-no risk. But if ppl want to like, have their friends over, unmasked, on the PONTOON BOAT then you're at frat party levels of danger basically.

This might be a Great Lakes thing bc we have so much access, but...water activities are a great equalizer imo? The bar for taking part in fishing, boating, swimming, & other fun stuff is pretty low ALTHOUGH ADMITTEDLY I don't have a good racial diversity lens on this problem because...this is not a very diverse place. (Full disclosure I am 2 miles from a Great Lake right now.)

Yeah, there are all ranges of boats on the little lake my mom lives on, from the guys with bare bones fishing boats with outboard motors to fully tricked out pontoon boats with water slides, huge ass sound systems, lights and all the bells and whistles.

I grew up surrounded by water and owning a boat was super common but there’s definitely different vibes /socioeconomic status between owning an aluminum fishing boat, speedboats that can haul skiers and pontoon boats.

Re: the cabins thing, I've lived in and visited many cabins, some incredibly shitty, some total things of wonder. Not really sure where this idea about cabins comes from.

I think it's fair to say that the Trump/"re-opening" rhetoric around boating is def aimed at ppl with economic privilege, but it also lands with the people on other levels too. Thinking about 4 MI counties that refused to follow the gov's shut down orders back in May--all are very rural and on the water and on or adjacent to, like, national forests. Shutting down beaches, outdoor boat launches, and prohibiting going into the woods for people who live in rural/natural areas--those are some of the only things to do that are actually free or low cost that make living there worthwhile! And all are very low risk under certain circumstances, ie distancing, low pop density, etc.

Their non-compliance got combined in the news (afaict) with other counties but which were all Detroit suburbs-adjacent and very clearly ideologically motivated. Different groups, but the message hits for both.
