newsflash we're all mentally ill under capitalism

man, when you've lost the "grifter creep naming his kids an unpronunceable character string" vote...

https://www.spin.com/2020/07/kanye-west-at-2-in-first-national-poll-since-announcing-presidential-run/

LOL - he actually pulled votes from Trump in this poll.

2% might alarm some but trendy third party candidates tend to poll much higher than they will when we're still far out from election day (hence Nader polling close to double digits in the summer of 2000).

still just LOLing that the poll bucked "conventional wisdom"

I hear that sometimes Satan wants to defund police (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 14 July 2020 13:04 (three years ago) link

is he even on the ballot anywhere?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 14 July 2020 13:08 (three years ago) link

unless he's secretly diligently fulfilling campaign requirements as we speak, he'll be unable to appear on 10 state ballots after this week.

Steve Kramer tells @Bencjacobs he was hired to help @kanyewest get on the ballot in Florida and South Carolina. But while he was following up with Kanye's publicist, the operative suddenly texted the reporter to say "He's out."https://t.co/StNEgFZflF

He's...not out. And now on the ballot in OK. Which cost 35k.

However, FL's deadline was yesterday and the dude helping him get signatures there thought he quit...so?

Lol so OK is one of 3 states that you can buy your way onto the ballot. Guess he decided to say fuck it to the states with signature requirements. He's missed 8 other states deadlines and is about to miss a 9th today

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Thursday, 16 July 2020 15:15 (three years ago) link

Kanye said this and I left immediately. I went for a laugh and I got one. But when it got disrespectful for me it was over. pic.twitter.com/nNqjUp03mu

nice to know there's a level of fame you can reach in this country where establishment newsmedia will take seriously your run for president in spite of your clear mental illness.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 20 July 2020 12:58 (three years ago) link

You mean whatever level of fame Trump was at?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 July 2020 14:26 (three years ago) link

At this point it just makes me sad, he clearly isn't getting the help he needs.

That said, even with my sympathy for his mental health, I also wish the media would stop treating this with any sincerity.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 20 July 2020 14:29 (three years ago) link

the difference is I think Kanye is capable of doing good things but he's got all the wrong people in his ear. Trump is a pure sociopath who is incapable of doing a nice thing for anyone unless he gets something in return

frogbs, Monday, 20 July 2020 15:33 (three years ago) link

I don't know how to take the way things are going down right now. I suffer from severe mental illness. I don't like it when people use it as a pretext for disregarding what I'm saying. All that bias, all that stigma, that he's been through all his life. Not being taken seriously because he's black, not being taken seriously because he's bipolar, and what? Some goddamn white lady somewhere who's never listened to a single song of his says she's worried about him, worried that he might not be getting the help he needs?

Kanye deserves better, sure. We all deserve better. I don't think taking Kanye West seriously is really that much different from taking, oh, say, Bari Weiss or Elon Musk seriously. Things are fucked and Kanye isn't the only one having problems. Hell, I'd venture to perhaps suggest that maybe some of the problems Kanye is having aren't really _his_ problems in the first place, they're problems a lot of us have in common.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 15:42 (three years ago) link

I can no longer imagine feeling bad for kanye and I've felt that way for some time tbh

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Monday, 20 July 2020 15:55 (three years ago) link

people shouldn't take Elon Musk seriously either but alas we live in a society where being born rich is continued a great virtue which allows you to essentially invent your own reality where you can just dismiss every real problem as a hoax

Kate, re: mental health, you work hard to try to take care of yourself. Kanye pretty clearly thinks taking his meds and/or ensuring his prescriptions are actually working isn’t worth the time.

i do work hard to try and take care of myself! i also have a lot of people i trust who care about me and support me and have been very patient with me, so when i start thinking i should start randomly cold-turkeying my meds because clearly they aren't working, the people who care about me persuade me to hang on until i can actually see a professional to evaluate my meds even if it _is_ a two month wait, and i agree because i remember what happened when i cold-turkeyed the benzos.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 17:25 (three years ago) link

I know that from your posts on 77. I can see how you might’ve misread my post.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:09 (three years ago) link

Ye probably gets bored of his meds on the regular and just forgets they’re even in the medicine cabinet

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:10 (three years ago) link

i don't think i was misreading it! i'm just not inclined to judge anybody else for how they handle their mental health issues until or unless it directly affects me.

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 18:12 (three years ago) link

Let’s just say I have personal reasons that cause me to have extremely low patience with people who refuse to attend to their diagnoses when care is available and effective. It’s not as if Ye is a victim of our country’s fucked up healthcare system.

Kanye is a tragic story predominantly of his own making is how i break it down to an extent.

I just want to see how Bret Easton Ellis will spin this into
Kanye being persecuted by “the left”. It’s awful reading, but I was genuinely mesmerized by Ellis’ impassioned, horrifically misguided attempt to rehabilitate the public image of a fellow narcissist/artistic collaborator in his book WHITE (!)

i don't disagree. just like i don't disagree that, you know, wesley snipes listening to those people who told him that he didn't have to pay taxes, that's ultimately his responsibility. i just also see, when i look at kanye, someone who has spent the last fifteen years in the panopticon. i have a hard time seeing a timeline in which things worked out better for him. there's lots of people who have their heads screwed on better than kanye right now, that's for sure, but i wonder if that'll still be the case five years from now. i wonder how someone who's had the experiences kanye has had is supposed to _not_ go completely fucking batshit crazy in 2020.

ok. i don't know those people. who are some of them?

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 July 2020 19:30 (three years ago) link

i agree that things happen for a reason and i have some real sadness that Kanye - artistically, publicly, politically - has mostly disappeared so far up his own ass. At the same time, he and his family have chosen to be complicit with the Trump administration with the intent of getting federal favors in exchange for celebrity shine and, regardless of how righteous the asks they've made are, complicity with this administration means you can fuck off imo.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 20 July 2020 19:58 (three years ago) link
