yeah, i have to erase a game before adding a new one 9 times out of 10

Just got a 2TB external and I’m pleased to find that all the games I deleted still have their Save data

yeah, i'm always curious if the two production studios had any communications about that. i'm assuming the pro studio would have sued or something, if they had standing

wilds was openly in development with that title for years before worlds was announced. and "the outer worlds" is not a remotely good enough name to warrant the inevitable confusion.
this is at least the third time the worlds or wilds conversation has happened on ilx

The Outer Worlds = postmodern satirical AAA RPG where you explore the galaxy Outer Wilds = Indie action-RPG where you explore the galaxy but only for 22 minutes at a time

I just bought "Wilds" and "Control" (which was 66% off; $20 is my cutoff point for impulse purchases). My 1TB drive is pretty packed, but I figure as I go through titles I can delete them and, should I return to complete more of the games later, just download or install them again. I assume that whether playing from a disc or from a download, my progress is saved on my machine, and that when I reinstall my progress returns with it. Right? So if I uninstall, say, "God of War," where I am hovering around 60% completion, and then reinstall it later, I'll still be at 60%?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 July 2020 13:11 (three years ago) link
yeah unless you explicitly delete your saved game data files, all that information will remain when you reinstall your games
― Neil S, Thursday, 9 July 2020 13:13 (three years ago) link
yeah saves don't go away unless you go into the system settings somewhere and purge them. i think the sports games are the only ones where that'd even be a consideration because they make huge save files for the simulation stuff
― ciderpress, Thursday, 9 July 2020 14:37 (three years ago) link
Thanks. Size of games can be so misleading, especially since game discs still need to download most (all?) data to the drive to play, right?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 July 2020 14:51 (three years ago) link
right, running off the disc is too slow for modern games. the disc is basically just a DRM check once you've installed the game
― ciderpress, Thursday, 9 July 2020 15:26 (three years ago) link
Just like PC gaming of old. Looks like killing of the physical disc might finally happen this generation for consoles given the new driveless models
― Nhex, Thursday, 9 July 2020 17:10 (three years ago) link
I haven't bought a game disc in years. I have maybe three PS4 discs.

I definitely wanted to play something lighter and less intense/gruesome than "Last of Us" next (even though honestly I've been looking forward to "Bloodborne"), but while I was considering a return to "Spider-Man" again, I think I may go for something like ... "Ratchet and Clank," which I know I bought at some point, since iirc people really like, and I've never played in any way shape or form.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 18:56 (three years ago) link
yes! very fun + light game. i think you'll enjoy it.

Yes, all good fun, not too hard, and look like they've really pushed the PS2 to its limits (I mean that in a good way).
― BRAVE THE AFRIAD (onimo), Thursday, 16 July 2020 12:38 (three years ago) link
I have the version remade for the PS4.
Looking at my future backlog, besides some From stuff and Spider-man, it looks like I have all the Uncharteds, and all the nu Wolfensteins and Tomb Raiders, too (I've never played any version of any of them) so a bunch of interactive movies a la Last of Us. Plus a couple of Resident Evil stress balls, the first couple of Batman games and ... Mad Max! That last one should be fun to play. And I just got Outer Wilds and Control on sale as well, but no hurry there (lol).
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 July 2020 13:08 (three years ago) link
I've become a big fan of Outer Wilds. One of these games that etches it's way into my mind. I have started dreaming about it. I think about it while I'm away. But I love how low stakes it is (especially for a game about the END OF THE GALAXY). Very little violence. Lots of exploration. And I can play it for as long as I like thanks to the 22 minute time loop.
― doorstep jetski (dog latin), Thursday, 16 July 2020 13:36 (three years ago) link
Mad Max is a fun game as it uses the Batman Arkham fight mechanics which are always good and some of the vehicle weapons are very satisfying. It does include a lot of collecting stuff missions that fill up a whole load of open world games where 20 hour campaign modes turn out to be 15 hours of finding scrap metal - though I suppose that makes more sense in a Mad Max universe than in other games.
― BRAVE THE AFRIAD (onimo), Thursday, 16 July 2020 14:05 (three years ago) link
"Ratchet & Clank" may be the literal opposite of "The Last of Us," which is perfect, but ironically more challenging than it should be at first as I adjust to something so low-stakes and goofy.

ghosts of tsushima is good, reviews are wrong, and i typically find open world checklist games unbearable. infamous x babby mode bushido blade.

i guess the bushido blade ref is a good one - i used to fucking LOVE bushido blade, although i sucked at it
it is tempting and getting good fan reviews, but I still have Witcher, Death Stranding, RDR2 and Horizon all in various states of completion so maybe i'll wait

my wife described it as "elegant" which is not a word i'd use to describe like assassin's creed.
the bushido blade thing comes from the standoff mechanic which is basically a little minigame where you hold triangle and wait for a dude to commit to an attack. release triangle at the right time and it's a samurai movie instakill. you can upgrade it and chain them together and it's pretty cool, if simple.
there's a big map with lots of dumb shit to do, mostly "talk to dude/kill other dudes/return to first dude." but the HUD is minimal, the vibe is chill and pretty, the combat is stupid fun. lots of toys and easily-pulled-off moves. bombs and shit.
it feels kind of ps2/3-ish, in a good way, in that you can break the systems pretty easily. set of an alarm and train all the dudes in a fort in a big line around and around until you can grab whatever the goal is, then run away and pick them off one by one. the stealth is basic but funny. like just stabbing dude after dude making a huge pile of bodies that the remaining mooks don't seem to notice.
― adam, Friday, 24 July 2020 15:37 (three years ago) link
for context i thought ass creed odyssey, RDR2, and spiderman were brutally unfun and tedious but i love jak 2, beyond good and evil, and ass creed liberation.

whoa thanks for the impressions. might give it a try when it gets to the $20 part of its lifecycle
the black and white 'kurosawa mode' getting advertised as a draw despite being blatantly poorly conceived was enough of a red flag that i wrongly assumed the whole thing would be off

witcher 3's central story isn't very good either ime, its the sidequest writing thats fun
― ciderpress, Friday, 24 July 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link
Main story of Breath of the Wild was pretty pro forma, it was the side stuff that made that game, too.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 24 July 2020 21:10 (three years ago) link
breath of the wild actually has the right approach to make open world storytelling work - fragmented and environmental rather than a linear central narrative
