I don't know what's happening in the US but it seems like every sports event in the UK has been 100% behind BLM, kneeling before matches, wearing Black Lives Matter on their shirts, the West Indies cricket team were even wearing single black gloves before the test match with England.

(For what it's worth, the Edmonton franchise is the Packers/Cowboys/Patriots of the CFL; that's where Warren Moon began, and my guess would be they've won far more championships--Grey Cups--than any other CFL team.)

Brief swing back to Nancy Green, the original Aunt Jemima: the Times printed an obituary a century late

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/17/obituaries/nancy-green-aunt-jemima-overlooked.html

Green was buried in an unmarked grave in Oakwood Cemetery in Chicago. That same year, the United Daughters of the Confederacy nearly succeeded in erecting a monument to “faithful colored mammies.” Legislation was approved by the United States Senate, but did not make it past the House.

****

Green's great-great-great nephew, Marcus Hayes, is studying to become a pastor at Oakwood University in Alabama, which is affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Hayes said in a phone interview that Green had used her prominence to promote equality and would be disappointed that others had profited from her talent while her family received no recognition or compensation. “She would want the real story to be told of her and the ladies that came after her,” Hayes said. “Aunt Jemima is more than a character. She is Nancy Green, and this is her recipe, and her legacy must be told.”

Sherry Williams, the president of The Bronzeville Historical Society, which preserves African-American culture in Chicago, writes, “History does not simply disappear when you remove the Aunt Jemima image and brand name. Aunt Jemima is representative of the countless Black women who were and are the essential workers. Nancy Green in particular is the ideal woman to salute.”

Newly available to the public for streaming:

https://americanarchive.org/catalog?f%5Baccess_types%5D%5B%5D=online&f%5Bseries_titles%5D%5B%5D=Black+Journal&sort=episode_number_sort+asc

In the spring of 1968, the nation was reeling from protests in hundreds of cities in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., racial inequality and school segregation, and the Vietnam War. Media reports on these issues came from white-dominated network news programs.
It was at this crucial moment that New York City’s National Educational Television (NET), the precursor to WNET and the PBS network, launched the public television series Black Journal, produced by Black talents. Premiering on June 12, 1968, the first episode included the recently widowed Coretta Scott King speaking that very day at Harvard University, a progress report on Dr. Martin Luther King’s Poor People’s Campaign, and a study of the African American political reaction to Robert Kennedy’s assassination, which had occurred that week.

Black Journal’s broadcasts spanned 1968 to 1977 and 59 episodes from the series are available to stream for the first time, thanks to The WNET Group’s participation in The American Archive of Public Broadcasting.

The moment that we're living through is more Kwame Ture than John Lewis. Clinton's remark isn't just historical commentary, but a plea to quell the insurgent Black radicalism we're seeing today. I thought this was an interesting article that also highlights the devolution of the Republican Party as much as it highlights the evolution of Elizabeth Warren: https://www.boston.com/news/politics/2020/08/03/elizabeth-warrens-journey-on-race-is-a-preview-of-her-partys

shout-out to his family (DJP), Monday, 3 August 2020 14:40 (three years ago) link

that is an interesting article, thank you for sharing it djp

it's definitely good to hear about warren's journey. it makes me think of what i've read of bobby kennedy's journey in the '60s.

and honestly, a lot of it resonates with my own experience. i'm always cautious about how much to center my own experience in any conversation about race, as much as i know that white people need to openly talk about their own prejudices, so i'll just leave it at that for now.

A White Couple Allegedly Terrorized Their Black Neighbor for 3 Years

In July, Jennifer McLeggan — a 39-year-old Black single mom who lives in Valley Stream, New York — posted a sign in the doorway of her home. On it, she accused her two white neighbors, John McEneaney, 57, and his live-in girlfriend Mindy Canarick, 53, of several abuses, and concluded, “I live in FEAR for my life at home.”

McLeggan, a registered nurse, wrote that she had a recording of her neighbors goading their friends into spitting on her property. She said the couple also walked around the back of her house holding BB guns, took a blowtorch to her house late one night, wore blackface, threw feces on her lawn, left four dead squirrels in her yard, and said that McLeggan could be “erased.” She wrote that when police were contacted, they told her that she needed to be harmed in order for them to proceed with an arrest.

On Monday, police arrested McEneaney and Canarick and charged them with several misdemeanors. The pair have allegedly harassed McLeggan for three years. Canarick was charged with criminal tampering in the third degree, and McEneaney with criminal mischief in the fourth degree and harassment in the first degree. The couple were arraigned at the Hempstead District Court and subsequently released. Sources told CBS2 that McEneaney’s father has been accused of similar harassment, but prosecutors have not found enough evidence to arrest him.

...

Judge Erica Prager has reportedly granted McLeggan an order of protection from her two neighbors, but McLeggan told ABC News she feels even less safe now, especially since they are still living next door. “I just feel like now they’re more dangerous because now they’ve been arrested,” she said.

Thank god they finally prosecuted her neighbors but she's likely correct that they're gonna feel newly energized.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2020/10/jon-henrys-stranger-fruit-shows-black-mothers-constant-fear-of-loss-and-trauma/

There is a demand put upon you with “Stranger Fruit.” That much is clear. The photographs of mothers and sons, of Black bodies—whole and unpierced, yet still Christ-like in death—do not gently plead with viewers any more than street protesters merely invite police to change. These are Black mothers, sitting, standing, kneeling with their lifeless sons, staring straight at the camera, straight at the viewer, straight at the nation, commanding your attention, and it costs you dearly to see them. But it costs more to look away.

The mothers are seen with their sons of varying ages, posed in the classic pietà, a grieving Mary holding the dead body of Christ. The photos are shot in big cities and other places where you can see a motionless Black body without visible trauma and believe that the person is dead. These places, you understand, are complicit in what you are seeing. Henry, who for 15 years worked as a sexton in Queens, says this project was inspired by Christian iconography and memories of his mother’s incessant worry as he was growing up. Stepping outside always brought exhortations to her only child to be careful, to stay safe, to make it back home.
