Honestly, I could not care less about what Flynn is doing with his time right now. Let him go full wackjob. I'd rather worry about how this administration is working overtime to even kick out the immigrants doing things "the right way".

International students who are pursuing degrees in the United States will have to leave the country or risk deportation if their universities switch to online-only courses, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced

This is insane. Surely this is a feint of some kind. Classes start in two months, they’ve already been paid for.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:23 (three years ago) link

I absolutely agree that it is insane. But I'm also going to venture that no one in this administration or at ICE gives one flying fig about how much a student may have paid for their classes.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

it seems likely to have the predictable but unintended consequence that schools will not go online-only to accommodate students who would otherwise have to leave the US, thus ensuring a third wave of covid in the fall.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:26 (three years ago) link

This is insane. It places foreign students who are essentially helpless in a middle of huge argument over online vs in-person teaching. No university will be able to go fully online (which is arguably the medically responsible thing to do) if it shafts their students like this. https://t.co/n8h1J1BA3J

xps

this is probably way off and it also sounds like a conservative warning from the mid-90s, but i wonder how much of the rise of the Q bullshit is related to the demise of the centrality of religion to people's lives? some of this stuff just seems like people desperate for evidence of a higher power or force that guides things.

miller: you have to leave if your school is online only
schools: ok let's do some classes IRL

that was my first thought. it seems like an inevitable trump admin policy because it supports covid denial and nationalism at the same time

So far, the monetization of QAnon has been done by amateurs and small time grifters. I'm guessing Flynn just sees a fallow field and wants to grow his cash income.

The order concerning foreign students in the USA revolts me but does not surprise me. I have been advising students to avoid going to the USA for some time. This may get the message through. It is not a safe place.

xp that's the thing they're trying to communicate. i don't think they care about whether campuses reopen this year, or whether these specific students go home. they are trying to diminish campuses as 1) a place where "liberals" are created 2) a route through which people enter the US. anything that creates uncertainty this year is good for _years_ of uncertainty.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 6 July 2020 22:43 (three years ago) link

this is the least important thing right now but how are you supposed to use your school's libraries, archives, laboratories, whatever else a grad student needs if you are in your home country? it's like these people don't know what school is.

57% of the usa’s 1 million foreign students are from China, India, and South Korea. Universities are counting on that money, especially public universities.

Still going to be in the midst of the first wave for most of the country, so it's fine.

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 6 July 2020 23:59 (three years ago) link

HRC tried as hard as she could to publicize Trump's business frauds and failures. It made no difference. By now everyone on earth has seen enough of him and they know just where they stand, pro or con; nothing Biden does or says will alter that. Even Biden knows he is basically a bystander in this election.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 00:05 (three years ago) link

I hear you but he wasn't yet responsible for tens of thousands of deaths

whoever's minding Biden needs to get him some Omega 3's and caffeine and just trot him out there on his porch to call Trump a negligent idiot twice a week, it's not that hard

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 00:10 (three years ago) link

His campaign tweets out that he's a negligent idiot every day. If he trotted onto his porch and said it twice a week, the media would soon get bored and wander off. He doesn't put on the kind of non-stop dog and pony show they're used to from Trump. Pulling any sort of attention to herself was a primary problem for HRC in 2016.

It's already happening; you're just not paying attention.

WILMINGTON, Del. — Former vice president Joe Biden on Tuesday seized a moment when the coronavirus is resurging to stress how poorly he says President Trump has handled the pandemic and to promise that as president he would take a different path.

“It didn’t have to be this way,” Biden said at Alexis I. duPont High School. He did not wear a mask during his speech, but he held one in his left hand for much of the address. “Month after month, as other leaders and other countries took the necessary steps to get the virus under control, Donald Trump failed us.”

Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, cited Trump’s declaration earlier in the outbreak that he was a “wartime president,” saying, “It seems like our wartime president surrendered, waved the white flag and left the battlefield.”

The campaign event, for which Biden left the house where he has largely been staying home, highlighted the starkly different messages the candidates are sending on the pandemic. Trump has portrayed his handling of the virus as a success, refused to wear a face mask even as other GOP officials are increasingly doing so, and often sought to direct the conversation elsewhere. Biden, in contrast, frames Trump’s approach to the coronavirus as a historic failure that illustrates his shortcomings.

I am surprised you’re so naive about that possibility. Boris caught it, lived, and it’s basically as it always was. The only difference it could possibly make in Trump’s case is if he didn’t get so lucky.
