fwiw there's a new Nazar EP as of Friday

solo scampito (mh), Monday, 6 July 2020 00:00 (three years ago) link

This is the year of massive compilations that have too many tracks but are also infuriatingly high quality

While it is certainly in the realm of gqom, I think this new EP from Menzi is sick.

Thanks for sharing that Menzi EP, tables. I posted a couple of gqom bangers (of the nonderground kind) on the Rolling Afro thread last week btw icymi ymmv etc

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Friday, 10 July 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

Np, breastcrawl. I need to set aside a day to go through the Afro thread, I returned to ILX in June and it was already so overwhelming that I bookmarked it three posts in.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Friday, 10 July 2020 18:33 (three years ago) link

Also, glad you dug the Menzi! It's good.

best thing i have heard in ages is this by someone from poland :

https://malim.bandcamp.com/album/moonshine

it just kicks my head all over the place.

mark e, Friday, 10 July 2020 19:02 (three years ago) link

I like that, mark. it does what it's doing very well.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Friday, 10 July 2020 19:17 (three years ago) link

yeah, i have subsequently dug into their other stuff in recent weeks.
both of the tropicadelia mixtapes are really good fun.
but nothing hits the spot quite as much as moonshine.

The gqom thing reminded me - I posted this on Rolling Afro back in February:

Desire Marea (half of queer duo FAKA) dropped an album last month with experimental art pop. There’s a video for “You Think I’m Horny”, but check out highlights like “Zibuyile Izimakade” and “Tavern Kween” as well.
Pitchfork reviewed it, favourably. There must be other suitable threads for this - not sure which ones though. It’s probably not clubby enough for Jordan’s (post-)Reconstructed Club Music thread. Anyone have any ideas?

Not gqom, but South African, and on second thought it might actually fit here, some of the tracks anyway - experimental: yes, art: yes, pop: scratch that. Check also "Thokozani".

from that Pitchfork review: "on Desire, their exploration of the divine takes them in a many-splendored multitude of stylistic directions, often within the span of a single track: liturgical drone, galloping club beats, existential noise."

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Friday, 10 July 2020 19:30 (three years ago) link

I really liked that Desire Marea album, the last track is incredible

And Lighght's new EP has some bangers:

This is a pretty unique record, sort of a blend of modern sound design, post-punk, noise, etc:

I believe she also produced most of this Lebanese rap record:

On the fun dance music side, this is just pure siren sound effect joy:

And this Leonce x Neana ep has some cuts for sure:

That Houndstooth comp is out, lots of wild tracks, brings together a lot of ppl associated with different crews/labels (Svbkvlt, NAAFI, etc):
https://houndstoothlabel.bandcamp.com/album/alterity

It looks like Houndstooth is picking up where Tri Angle left off with Lotic, Aya, etc

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 28 August 2020 21:38 (three years ago) link

I was going to post it as possible Jordan-bait!

I have mixed feelings about that label jumping in and have fears it's a weird, semi-gentrified stamp of approval despite loving the music

irn-scamp (mh), Saturday, 29 August 2020 02:30 (three years ago) link

The Gooooose track on that is excellent, sounds really fresh but also some classic filter sweeps in there

lukas, Monday, 31 August 2020 19:40 (three years ago) link

Yeah I hear you, my first reaction is that it felt bandwagon-y given their past releases. On the other hand a lot of these artists could use a boost and good support, so hopefully it works out for everyone.

I was just listening to this new Gooooooooooooooooooooose, which is excellent: https://svbkvlt.bandcamp.com/album/jac

Also I haven't had time to put it on yet, but here's another giant charity compilation (for Beirut) with a ridiculously stacked lineup:

got a little burned out on this during quar as i regressed to comfort music but god damn that houndstooth comp slaps. was confused by gentrification talk until i realized i was confusing them with wisdom teeth ... anyways this comp is like the best of this style

Not dance music but this drums/synth duo record truly hits a sweet spot for me, I really think that people who are into the Beatrice Dillon record would like this:
https://health.bandcamp.com/album/neighbours
(Church Andrews & Matt Davies - NEIGHBOURS)

New Dengue Dengue Dengue on NAAFI:
https://denguedenguedengue.bandcamp.com/album/fiebre

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 16 October 2020 14:56 (three years ago) link

So I regularly listen to stuff on the main bobbins thread and think "nice, but I know how to do that" but some of that NEIGHBOURS stuff makes me feel like a total production chump, probably because of the live element. Really impressive.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Saturday, 17 October 2020 03:10 (three years ago) link

all right, it’s time for me to listen to this new Hyph11e album

mh, Sunday, 18 October 2020 22:58 (three years ago) link

Tombot - same, I get the impression that the synth half of the duo is in total control of his rig, and in a very flexible and musical way. I really like his recent solo record too:
https://health.bandcamp.com/album/ca1-extended

(I need to listen to the Hyph11e too!)

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 19 October 2020 19:12 (three years ago) link

I need a second listen. A few noisy ambient things, some more melodic stuff, only a couple tracks stood out on first listen

I’m assuming the bangers will be whatever remixes happen. The single before the album had a kode9 one iirc that was pretty good but not a huge variation?

mh, Monday, 19 October 2020 20:20 (three years ago) link

fwiw there are a couple tracks on this that would qualify for this thread so it just baaaarely squeaks by when it comes to meeting our criteria, but I enjoyed it:
https://sneakersocialclub.bandcamp.com/album/evident-ware-full-lp

mh, Monday, 19 October 2020 20:21 (three years ago) link

neighbours is def dillon-bait and similar to that record seems like a breath of fresh air wherein experimental doesn't mean "dour" "academic" or "insultingly boring as shit" as it so often does in NYC ...

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Monday, 19 October 2020 21:59 (three years ago) link

Ooh, well said. I'm trying to take a page out of this approach too, focused but fun.

I just realized that Church Andrews is an alias of Bambooman, which I can totally hear now:

That Neighbours record— I find the mix, at least on the first two tracks on the bandcamp, to be really heavy in the mids and high frequencies. It is interesting and fun, but I'm finding it slightly irritating in a way I don't find other stuff we're putting here. Does it get, uh, bassier?

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Friday, 23 October 2020 14:31 (three years ago) link

this Hyph11E record has some good shiny sounds and nice moments of glitchy dnb abandon, super gross cover art too, can't stop looking at it

adam, Monday, 26 October 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

Not really. My guess was that the subby kicks and claps were sampled and the drummer was just playing all the clattery inbetween stuff, but from this video it looks fully live:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWfNfNCi5o4

(my guess is that it's the old trick where a tone generator/sine wave + gate is sidechained to the kick)

The Nazar mix for RA is pretty wild (and dark). Really enjoyed the Jamz Supernova one too, more on the conventional side but it led me to this great South African ballroom track (reading about Kirvan Le Cap now, who sadly was murdered earlier this year):

What do we consider Giant Swan? The preview track from their upcoming EP is very noisy, I love it.

Industrial techno, I guess? I enjoyed their debut, looking forward to the EP.

pomenitul, Sunday, 29 November 2020 21:57 (three years ago) link

It's too weird to be industrial techno, I think. That's there, sure, but there's also the Sewn Leather/DJ Dog Dick noise punk/grind thing, the more refined digital hardcore of the late 90s and early 2000s, and some dare I say OPN-like vibes on the debut. The track above is definitely not the best representation, but I love it still

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Sunday, 29 November 2020 22:11 (three years ago) link

this might fit here - awesome stuff:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWXTQkNSRlc
D'Vo • Mbalax

from the compilation Pluralistic Reflex on Byrd Out

fwiw - I don't any of these names: "D'Vo [is] the solo electronic output of Tilé Gichigi-Lipere of Cykada, Myriad Forest and more."

Love the sound world of that track.

yes thanks to jordan for being a boss at not only curating but producing this style

perhaps just like "rolling experimental post-bass", is that too clinical? i can't think of any more jokes. but i do think that is the difference between this and the "doing it wrong" thread which is for more shredded and lo fi traditional house and techno (i think?)

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Monday, 4 January 2021 16:22 (three years ago) link

Aw thanks <3

I agree with that, although the word "experimental" can be a touchy word for some. I'll start a new thread soon!
