U2 then showed up to do a free concert and played the most obvious song to commemorate it....

I can't believe the news today...

I’ve seen more rebel flags in rural Pennsylvania than I ever have in rural Maryland. Truly baffling.

Historically speaking, Maryland's confederate sympathizers were concentrated in Baltimore; rural Western Md. had independent farmers who resented the south's free labor. It was a CSA miscalculation that Marylanders would welcome them as liberators.

West Virginia is a weirder case - it was quite literally formed due to anti-Confederate sentiment.

And yet in my 1970s/80s childhood, that fucking battle flag was on every third towel for sale in roadside emporia, and on half the truck bumpers. If asked, its fans said it was about resisting Federal power, and government in general, but there is really no mystery to the appeal.

Proof (as if it were needed) that the 20th century usage of that flag was always WAY more about 1965 than 1865.

I cannot speak with authority about Pennsylvania. But there is an old saying about Pittsburgh at one end, Philadelphia at the other, and Kentucky in between.

I've often wondered if he suddenly died would there be celebratory parades and marches.

if that somehow translates into a spontaneous worldwide celebration, what can you do.

i think the chances of this scenario happening get pretty low after he's been out of office for a bit, though. but if he died any time between now and january 2021, maybe even may 2021? you may just see some

We had a pretty well-attended party the day that Thatcher died, and that was in Oakland.

I predict lots of parties no matter when it happens

it seems a bit gauche to celebrate a death publicly, but I'd probably risk the roni to get in on some street parties if this happened.

He's the horrifying spider who currently sits at the center of the web of wrong, bad and evil. The bigger problem is all the people who love this man. And who love people like Bolsonaro, Modi, Duterte, and Netanyahu. There will be another Trump after Trump, but at the least we must keep them out of the White House.

someone explain to me why the federal government is so bad but apparently the state government is fine with these people?

if you ask the libertarians they'll say some shit about the state government being closer to you, more accountable to the people. of course those guys are sort of quaint now

they don’t know any FBI agents or federal employees or doctors or professors in real life and anyone they went to high school with who might work in these careers moved away a long time ago

That sounds kind of weird to me. You don't know elitist libertarians? I sure have...

Nhex, Monday, 6 July 2020 05:12 (three years ago) link

Self-described libertarians are more likely to not like the cops or military much either.

Not pretending otherwise conservatives like cops because they harass and kill the people the conservatives don't like, they also generally hate local and state government when it's not actively enforcing their worldview. Damn zoning rules keeping me down! I have to get a PERMIT to build my backyard GUN RANGE in this suburban cul-de-sac? TYRANNY.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Monday, 6 July 2020 06:44 (three years ago) link

The divisions on the right only come out when you have a vote on like funding a new baseball stadium or something - the pro-business conservatives are on board because they love welfare for the rich, the deep reactionaries are opposed because taxes are inherently evil, the libertarians split the difference depending on what the taxes are.

@realDonaldTrump
They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct. Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!

He just sees attacks on Warren as bolstering his popularity with his fan base. He never neglects to feed them sure-fire applause lines each and every day. No matter how hackneyed and overdone they are, he'll fall back on them because his audience expects them and delights in them neverendingly.

here is the first NSA of the trump administration taking the Q oath, "where we go one, we go all"

Travis View, host of the QAnon Anonymous podcast, said Sunday that Flynn’s β€œoath” the previous night was β€œpart of a years long pattern of signaling to the QAnon community.” Two years ago, View noted, Flynn was inscribing books with the β€œWhere We Go 1 We Go All” slogan.

Honestly, I could not care less about what Flynn is doing with his time right now. Let him go full wackjob. I'd rather worry about how this administration is working overtime to even kick out the immigrants doing things "the right way".

This is insane. Surely this is a feint of some kind. Classes start in two months, they’ve already been paid for.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:23 (three years ago) link

I absolutely agree that it is insane. But I'm also going to venture that no one in this administration or at ICE gives one flying fig about how much a student may have paid for their classes.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

it seems likely to have the predictable but unintended consequence that schools will not go online-only to accommodate students who would otherwise have to leave the US, thus ensuring a third wave of covid in the fall.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:26 (three years ago) link

This is insane. It places foreign students who are essentially helpless in a middle of huge argument over online vs in-person teaching. No university will be able to go fully online (which is arguably the medically responsible thing to do) if it shafts their students like this. https://t.co/n8h1J1BA3J

xps

this is probably way off and it also sounds like a conservative warning from the mid-90s, but i wonder how much of the rise of the Q bullshit is related to the demise of the centrality of religion to people's lives? some of this stuff just seems like people desperate for evidence of a higher power or force that guides things.

that was my first thought. it seems like an inevitable trump admin policy because it supports covid denial and nationalism at the same time
