Am I the only one who, when upgrading to a new phone or machine, just leaves it 'Mac-Mini-2' or 'iPhone (2)' out of superstition and/or a belief that attempting to fix it will be far more trouble than it's worth, yet still allowing it to bug them every time they see it??

I started listening for the home server discussion. I want to get a nas but the guy who has one (instead of like a Mac mini) is obviously an idiot which makes me doubt my own judgment haha

if you’re going to use the functionality that automatically prompts you to share wifi passwords with friends, it seems like it’s limited to about five feet. so lean in for a sec, if you’re in a yard with wifi

Does anyone have a car with Carplay? Any good? It's one of the factors in our car buying decision (basic trim vs next level up one of the upgrades is carplay).

i don't know how much i'd pay for it if it wasn't included as standard, but it is great for navigation. waaaay better (and feels safer) than using your phone. other than that, i don't get a ton out of it that i don't get out of a bluetooth connection.

I’ve used it on rentals and it’s much better (and simpler) than the UI on any car with a dashboard screen I’ve used otherwise. I’d make sure it’s a vehicle that has a screen close enough that’s meant to be reached out and tapped safely — one loaner from a dealer when my car was being serviced had a touchpad thing in the center console that was trying to be too fancy, and I think the distance to screen was part of the decision

Definitely an improvement on using a suction cup / phone on the inside of the windshield for navigation. Voice calling works well and I think it refuses to deliver texts while driving which is good.

i think carplay is pretty darn good although it can get a little flakey at times (random blank screens, stuff just suddenly not working). i use spotify, waze, and the apple podcast app. texting using siri is also nice if you just need to respond quickly to a text.

Same. I don’t have it in my car, but the rentals I’ve used with CarPlay have been great when they worked, but had a bunch of bugs and disconnect issues. Could have been overworked USB jacks though.

The texts are read aloud! I think iOS is getting this as an option, but AirPods also do this now. It works reasonably well.

Hmm. Does sound nice but I don’t know if there are enough other features on the stepped up trim that I care about to make it worth the extra 2500 or so.

I was going to say some upgrades are worth it on cheaper cars but I think I know what you’re playing at and, yeah

on second thought, that looks like a good trim package

specifically the blind spot package (safety!), heated seats/moonroof (comfort) and six speaker system

I would assume you’re going above the base level upholstery which I have decided is good after having cloth seats that never cleaned up well and tore

never discount the value of a toasty butt

yeah the BSI, heated seats and airplay are the best things about that package. the BSI is the big deal though.

is "hondalink" a thing where you can use an app to start the car? that is extremely handy if you're dealing with extreme temperatures and kids.

i don't know if it's worth $2500, but unless you keep the car until it has a resale value of $0, it's not actually going to cost you $2500.

I so miss the days when optional equipment was sold a la carte rather than in packages or "trim levels", so I didn't have to spend thousands on crap I don't want, or worse would rather not have, just to get a few crucial items. Honda has long been one of the worst offenders in this regard.

Anyway Carplay is totally worth having, especially for beaming the navigation maps to the dashboard screen. Some new cars (and replacement head units for old cars) have wireless Carplay which is more convenient than the kind that makes you plug in a USB cable, especially the slow-charging old USB-A type.

Also, the dual-zone climate control is a relationship saver...

The wireless CarPlay with charging pad should be available as another step up in trim than the wired regular CarPlay

The worst feature of my 2015 Honda Fit was when I had to replace the transmission even though I was still below 15k miles. This was last week. The dealer told me to call Honda to complain and Honda covered 75% of the cost but I’m still out 1200$

CarPlay is better than nearly all the integrated systems I’ve tried except the Audi virtual cockpit one. (They’ve managed to make that much worse with the new touchscreen version though).

Do talk about Honda somewhere as I’m on the brink of leasing a CRV

I rented a Ford Expedition (inadvertently) with the top of the line upgrades and drove it to Michigan and back and it was BA NA NAS stupidly big and boat-y, but also I got kinda used to some of the things?? Not only heated seats but ventilated seats, with AC vented through them! Heaven. Also the on-board nav w touch screen that displayed the map as I drove, BSI with warning lights on the side mirrors, wireless charging pad and USB/12v outlets everywhere, a reallly good back-up cam (you need it on that thing)...oh and the driver's seat auto-retracts when you turn the car off, so you can get out more easily. That was wild but useful bc I'm short and have to sit really close to the pedals.

Basically it was scarily comfortable except for driving like a boat and being huge enough to kill a lot of pedestrians at the same time.

Sorry that should read 50k miles. Still way to early For a new trans.

Oh and the headlights and wipers work all by themselves--it even dims and brightens the headlamps when it senses lights ahead. I appreciated both features when I drove through a sudden downpour in PA on my first day and I didn't know where the wiper control was yet.

I've never driven a car w modern tech, so I was just really charmed that it automatically connected to my phone & itunes library, contacts, etc and I could call anyone with voice commands and so on. Magical!

The iPhone 12 Mini does look the business, physically smaller than the SE2020 but edge to edge, larger, higher res OLED screen. Like...any Samsung.

But it’s gonna be nearly twice the price of the SE, so there you go.

Yeah, the SE2020 was the first time I've ever had the "latest thing". Usually it's last year's or the year before's model. It's nice, but I've dropped it more often in five months than I did any of the smaller handsets, ever. This could just be senility. Happy to go back to small and not-the-latest-thing if 12 Minis are going cheap in 2022!
