Oh wait sorry tohms i didn't see this post you made

what can I say, I have to hand it to you "Oink Admin," RickyG is in fact a part of Oink as of a few days ago, so it seems this place may not be hoax after all (or your just real good). That said I still dont understand why you are leaving all of these "accepted" people hanging. None of the transactions ive made have ever had this problem.

2) rockism? British term that refers to the level of authenticity in popular (pop) music. It is a purist movement which believes that at one point music has reached its pureststate of expression. All subsecuent styles of music and technologies used to produce these styles will have resulted in a loss of authenticity, and that some kinds of new musical expression are nothing more than merchandising.
Rockism critics observe the following ideas: The use of synthesizers or other such digital media instruments are questioned for their authenticity, as they would tend to give the music a prefabricated feeling. Composer and Songwriting skills are taken into account as indicative of the quality of the musical production process. "Design" of the product is taken into account, i.e., it is more a merchandising product, or is it a unique creative expression.
Rockism critics are searching, as all critics do, for a certain purification or reduction of judgement to one single line of thought (western science teaches there must be only one origin to one thing). Problems with this or any kind of criticism arise when the reader or the critic him/herself questions the authenticity of his/her OWN judgement, that is, how does one conclude that one's own judgement is in fact authentic, and not biased or inadvertantly influenced by another idea (on whose judgement can we decide what is good music and what is not, what is authentic and what is not). The purity then, of "rockism" critiques would the be tainted, and lose value as a "dependable" source of criticism. The point to criticism is to make available other sources of thought and logic, then also the danger of critiques such as rockism or other music critiques is that they tend not to offer meaningful insight so much as offering simplistic views ("I dont like it bcause it talks about sex, I dont like it because its based all on samples of music which have been digitally mass produced, etc).

4) Sufjan Stevens. It is like being asked to choose between apples and pears. Maybe the taste would be similar to some, but completely different to others. However, I would dare to state, trivial it may sound, that its not that Sufjan Stevens is better or worse, similar or dissimilar than Deerhoof, but simply different. Sufjan Stevens is different in a way that appeals to my particular sense of aesthetics. I do not dislike the clear musical influences that result in Deerhoofs eclectic style, but those of Sufjan Stevens evoke in me, because of the time and place that i was raised in, and my subsecuent choice in musical consumption. That being said, Sufjan Stevens style of expression, as per my taste, is a pleasantly surprising exprimentation in form and content of both musical structure/style, and creative expression in lyrics. I would not dare to make a comparison between the two, but only state that that afect that Sufjan's style has on me as an individual is that of contemplation and serenity and introspection and curiosity to hear what more he can think of. That in a nutshell, is great music to me, and that is what i search for in Sufjan Stevens music. It is quite an experience, and to find out whether or not another individual would agree to it, demands direct and personal experience.

I'd like to go on record as saying that even though I specifically noted THAT I DID NOT WANT AN INVITE in my application; I was sent one anyway. I don't have to use Oink, because people mail me free music all the time (I HAVE A BLOG; i can prove this) but I could use it if I wanted to.

I'm of the opinion that a great many of the people complaining on here are only trying to get an additional invite to sell IN A DIFFERENT AND NON-OINK SANCTIONED FORUM, which I think is just sad.

Shame on you opportunists and thanks to the administrators who work tirelessly without appreciation or renumeration.

I would also like to request one additional invite; my little brother would like to try the service, as he does not have a blog.

Oink Admin-

I posted a response to the necessary questions and I am waiting to see if i recieve an invitation to Oink. You had commented on one of my essays that I wrote concerning the differences between Deerhoof and Sufjan Stevens, in which i explained that I have never experienced these artits; and therefore, cannot conclusivly say which supreceeds the other, so no I am not sure weather or not one is better in my opnion. Additionally, others have written that they are divergent in forms and preformance, likening them to apples and pears. I suppose all music has the same impact in the simplest form of of dancing, but the emotions that are evoked from the sounds may be completely different, take for example heavey metal and gospel music. Furthermore, the dance preformed may be extremely different, considering mosh pitting and praising. Reguardless of this, what precautious do I need to take in order to be considered for an ivitation again?

Fondly,

Kford1

1) Feist - The Reminder, Prodigy - Return of the Mac, Rick Danko - Self Titled (mp3s are 192 kbs, but sound quality is not pristine as it is a vinyl rip).

2) I'm unfamiliar with the term rockism, so I'll discuss its potential meaning within the context of my own passion for music. Rockism describes my obsession to always seek out and acquire new music. My happiness is predicated on the continued growth of my music collection. The viral corollary to my rockism disease is my need to share new music with friends. I find that most people are amenable to some musically transmitted disease swapping. However, sometimes I run into someone who is not interested in new music. My rockism does not allow me to understand these people. They may enjoy music, but are content with whatever happens to be playing so long as it is pleasant and innocuous. They are not driven to constantly seek out new musical experiences. These people are a different species from me. I can respect anyone's musical taste, so long they are serious and passionate about their music. That is rockism and it is independent of genre or taste.

3) http://cms.pitchforkmedia.com/images/image/24216.livedinbars.gif

4) To me, Sufjan is better than Deerhoof. However, I will qualify my response by noting that I have all of Sufjan's albums and none of Deerhoof's. I have not taken Deerhoof seriously. I downloaded their free song from Emusic and was unimpressed. I judged them quickly and harshly, but if someone whose taste I respected suggested that I give them another chance, I would be willing to give their albums a listen. There are many reasons to criticize Sufjan. I think the most potentially damning criticism relates to his seriousness bordering on pretension. I don't think I can make a reasoned argument that Sufjan isn't twee-pretentious to the point of inducing nausea. All I can say is that I have bought into the Sufjan project and enjoy most of his work a great deal. Therefore, I choose Sujan over Deerhoof.

2) Rockism refers to the fact that some musical artists are seemingly more true to the art form of rock than others. Artists that are overproduced often fall into this category, whether it be true or not. For example Lo-fi sound lends itself to a positive reception in rockism since all aspects of music creation is controlled by the artist. While it could be argued that Bjork most certainly is an auteur/artist, the rockism philosophy stands in opposition. The use of synths and computers transcends (or maybe ruins) the humanity of her art. There is also a bitter undertone to rockism. The philosophy is probably born out of the desire of critics for things to be like the old days - before someone could play their instrument poorly only to have the producer clean it up beyond recognition of their failure. Rockism, in this day and age, should probably adapt as the advent of computers has moved from simple cleanup to a whole new avenue of creative output.

3) Anyone who posted any picture other than this one is wrong: http://www.richardavedon.com/images/editorial2004/newyorker/catpower_full.jpg
http://www.richardavedon.com/images/editorial2004/newyorker/catpower_full.jpg

4) I would choose Deerhoof. Not to discount Sufjan's talent as a songwriter, composer, and musician. Deerhoof just has the intangible element of being much more fun. Sufjan has made fun music to be sure. In fact, I really love the album Enjoy Your Rabbit, but this is his only electronic and most non-traditional album. I come back to Deerhoof to find the fun and amazing hooks through all the noise. I smile a lot more when I listen to Deerhoof. Their transcendental feeling is greater. I would also rather see a girly, diminutive Japanese bassist sing than a boyish, diminutive Episcopalian (no offense to the church of england) multi-instrumentalist sing.

5) I would appreciate 2 invites.

in case anyone would like to give me an invite, I would gladly accept one. Mainly because something in oink is linking to my band's website and I assume that our album leaked and wound up there; I'd just like to log in and see this for myself, though.

"explicitly clear?" the guidelines do not state that pictures couldn't be repeats, and I haven't seen you say it until now. but for the record, I haven't seen anyone else use my picture.

oh you know... we got a small cottage in the countryside where I can be free to write my screenplays while she keeps a small flower garden and a pet rabbit named Belle that we rescued one dewy morning.

did feigning interest in her fishing trip get you any action?

atomsforpeace, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Not to be a bitch - but "explicitly clear" apparently means not mentioning that rule at all in the first post, or does that mean the new rule was mentioned in one of the ~1000 responses?

Also, explicitly clear is redundant. Based on this redundancy I move that my application be reconsidered. Suggestion: you should change it to Jenny Lewis pictures since all the Cat Power ones have probably been used.

2)Rockism ideology to me takes away from the numerous forms of renaissance like genres of music today. It does not just pertain to rock and roll music but all forms of music. Music such as underground hip hop that can still achieve an originality to its music and do something different enough to catch your interest and reach popularity, embodies what rockism is against which is important. Hip Hop is able to sample music, similar to rock bands using synthesizers, and make good music. Despite the fact that they are not creating their own original scores or instumental sounds. Although there is nothing wrong with wanting to have music that follows rockism there needs to be music that does not in order to keep a balance. Sometimes music needs to follow a rockism path because sometimes the real instrumentals are distorted and ruined by use of all these new technological instruments and computers. In the end rockism is a great way to model music but music that does not can be just as entertaining.

4) I am not huge fan of sufjan stevens. I have tried to listen to his music numerous times and can never find something that really grabs my attention. Although i do not find the music of sufjan to be intolerable, i find it perfectly fine to listen but with me it just does not click. Deerhoof on the other hand i find to be a very good and entertaining band. I was lucky enough to see them at coachella and it was great. Their music is very catchy at times and can be relaxing for me as well. Usually anything that puts me at ease and can make me zone out for a little while is always welcomed by me and deerhoof does just that. With that said I am a much bigger fan of deerhoof than I am sufjan stevens soley based on connection not genre.

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
The central tenet of rockism is that authenticity is the (or at least a) key indicator of the quality of a piece of music/artist/genre/etc. (Leaving the difficulty of defining authenticity aside) I think that's rather silly. Take the blues for example. Robert Johnson's music is a more authentic take on the blues than Kenny Wayne Shepherd's because Johnson is black, from the Delta and long dead and Shepherd is a young white kid with long hair. Johnson's music is better than Shepherd's, but why? Well, the easy answer is because Johnson is authentic and Shepherd is not. But that is intellectually lazy. If you can't come up with a better reason than that to explain why Johnson is better than Shepherd you should turn in your rock critic card right now. Extend this argument and you get that rockism is just an intellectually lazy way to justify liking Prince but not Justin Timberlake.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
I like Deerhoof better. I enjoy the music of both, to an extent. When I'm listening to it, I like it. I sometimes buy their CDs. But I rarely, if ever, find myself thinking "Hey, I should put on some Deerhoof/Sufjan Stevens right now". Their music doesn't stick with me. However, I find Deerhoof a rather fascinating band from an intellectual standpoint. I'm much more likely to end up thinking about Deerhoof than listening to them, but that's more than I can say about Sufjan. I never think about Sufjan. Even Sufjan's worst stuff is vaguely pleasant, which is a large par of the problem for me. When Deerhoof fuck up, it's always in an interesting way. Like the last track on their new album. It sucks, but at least it's not boring.

Also I hate the Jesus.

2) What is rockism?
I don't know if I'd call myself a rockist, I'm definitely more comfortable in the company of Peridotites and other Igneous types like myself, but I dated a shalestone in college.

Or....

If you can play it live, without loops, samples etc., and it's basically a 12 bar blues structure, it fits the tenets of Rockism.
For example, Beatles before Sgt. Peppers, Pink Floyd before The Man and the Journey = Rockism.
After said albums = not Rockism.
Oddly enough, Rage Against the Machine is 100% Rockist.
Thus the theory of Rockism.
This sentence is padding.
This is the eighth sentence.

Sorry, just not my thing, but I'll choose Deerhoof, just because it's a cool name.
Since I have nothing to say on this subject and I don't think you really care about my musical tastes I'll have to come up with something better to say that'll make me invite worthy.
