We've known Trump is Mr. 'Double Down Whenever I Shit the Bed' for at least the past several centuries of his endless misrule.

what's funny is I forget how much more jaded most of us are than the rest of the people I know so I'll say shit like this out loud and people say "that's fucked up, you shouldn't wish death on people!"

actually makes me feel bad for a moment.....until I remember my brothers and sisters used to kill each other over squirrel meat

I mean...they're people who don't give a fuck about their own well being or the well being of others, to the extent that they pose an active risk to the well being and the very lives within their communities-at-large. Given the circumstances, it's perfectly okay to hope for their hasty demise, imo. They're like a quarter step away from being full-on terrorists afaic.

Biden Supporters Are More Worried About the Health Risks of Voting

Hey, this is what I said this yesterday! Democrats have better risk-assessment skills than Trump-supporting Republicans! This time there are, like, graphs tho:

Over all, the voters who said they would be too uncomfortable to vote in person back Mr. Biden, 63 percent to 9 percent [for Trump].

Even so, Mr. Biden does not appear to be at a meaningful enthusiasm disadvantage: 65 percent of his supporters said they were “very enthusiastic” about voting this November, compared with 66 percent of Mr. Trump’s supporters. Importantly, the survey question asked whether respondents were enthusiastic about voting, not whether they were enthusiastic about the candidate they supported — where Mr. Biden appears to be at a more significant disadvantage.

(Flip side is that the six battleground states being tracked offer voting by mail.)

sleeve, Friday, 3 July 2020 15:48 (three years ago) link

i wonder how that would play out at a county level, rather than at the state level. i'd guess that even in states that trump carried, the bulk of the deaths have been in cities or more populated areas, including blue counties in red states

time is running out to pitch in $5 (Karl Malone), Friday, 3 July 2020 15:57 (three years ago) link

Karl OTM - cases and deaths are very correlated with population density for reasons that ought to be obvious. Nevertheless, as the pandemic has progressed, blue and red states (also, roughly, D and R governors) have diverged largely because of different attitude s toward precautions.

zombeekeeper (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 3 July 2020 16:52 (three years ago) link

Importantly, the survey question asked whether respondents were enthusiastic about voting, not whether they were enthusiastic about the candidate they supported — where Mr. Biden appears to be at a more significant disadvantage.

Why is that "importantly"? Voting is what seals the deal and wins the election. Sitting around watching the campaign ads and thinking 'atta boy, you go!' is comparatively unimportant.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:51 (three years ago) link

I don't wanna pick on you sleeve but "who's winning the pandemic, team red or team blue" is something I really hate about COVID discourse.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:59 (three years ago) link

yeah that's fair, it just seemed relevant. I imagine the #s will even out (and deaths are skewed different as noted) but gee what a difference actual state level policy makes

sleeve, Friday, 3 July 2020 18:08 (three years ago) link

is there a correlation with the relative shittiness of state healthcare in general? i.e. states that have foregone medicaid expansion?

How the argument they're making applies any more to these Lincoln Project ads than any other stupid low-rent throw-them-off-their-game ads is entirely lost on me.

It doesn't, but those are the ones people are posting here.

Just say it pisses you off that Republicans are doing it.

well, yes, they're a bunch of murderous bush-era republicans trying to rehabilitate themselves in the eyes of credulous "i can't wait to not think about politics when trump is gone" centrists. that does bother me, and it bothers me to see their content get promoted here and on twitter.

there's also the fact they're running on issues that, among persuadable voters, have proven to be ineffective at best, and are probably counter-productive (we should give russia hell, the president is a vulgarian, etc.).

they fucking suck.

caek by "you" I meant the author(s) of that article

anyway I suspeect the effect of all televised PAC ads is cumulative, through repetition, and general. The vast majority of people who see them aren't paying any attention to who is producing them, and aren't participating in the rehabilitation of their producers' reputations.

I mean, Joe Biden himself needs a lot of rehab—he's a major player in policies his ooponent is now defending. So is posting his ads here, and those of the DNC, "promoting" his exoneration?

They all suck and all want Trump to lose for a variety of complementary reasons

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 3 July 2020 21:16 (three years ago) link

I guess the real takeaway for me is that I shouldn't be allowed to post without putting on my reading glasses, and I have to stop pretending I don't need them in order to get through a single sentence w/o a typo

if you think it makes no difference to the outcome of the election and you agree it's an attempt to make money and launder the reputations of extremely bad people, can you see the problem?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 3 July 2020 21:31 (three years ago) link

I don't think those things. Or rather I don't think in the latter case it will do that, nobody cares.

Anyway the reputation laundering comes w/ the Biden nomination. Whose forgiveness are they looking for?

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 3 July 2020 21:33 (three years ago) link

To the extent any political ads "make a difference" I believe they are "effective."

they have bought TV advertising in DC only (zero electoral votes). they have a total ad spend of $400k. they don't care about persuading persuadable people of anything, and it shows.
