My only concern with Lincoln Whatever is: someone who's an anti-Trumper while remaining a loyal Republican might split their ballot and vote against Trump while voting R downticket. In which case, fuck them slightly less than a straight-ticket R voter, but still fuck them.

As far as the Gates episode goes, were Sessions' comments merely just extreme ignorance or was he knowingly slandering Gates?

[i]On Wednesday, three Trump confidants told Axios that the president regrets heeding Jared Kushner’s advice to broaden his appeal by embracing milquetoast police and criminal-justice reforms; as one source summarized Trump’s thinking, he wants “no more of Jared’s woke shit.”

This account of Trump’s private reasoning comports with his public actions in recent days. Just this week, the president has:

• Described New York’s plan to paint “Black Lives Matter” down Fifth Avenue as a plot to affix a “symbol of hate” onto the city’s “greatest street.”

• Threatened to end an Obama-era policy that bars local governments from accessing federal housing funds unless they make affirmative efforts to track and reduce racial segregation in their communities. Trump said that he was reviewing this regulation on behalf of the “great Americans who live in the Suburbs,” and lamented that the policy is “not fair to homeowners.”

• Vowed to veto the Defense Authorization Act unless an amendment requiring the renaming of U.S. military bases that presently honor Confederate generals is stripped from the bill. (In announcing this position, Trump made sure to note that the amendment was sponsored by “Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren.”)

If one imagines Trump to be a rational political actor, it is difficult to make sense of these actions. According to Axios, Trump soured on Kushner’s calls for triangulation on criminal justice out of concern that indulging such reforms might be “seen as undercutting police” — as though anti-reform cops and Blue Lives Matter bumper-sticker owners were swing constituencies. George Floyd’s death has created plenty of political challenges for Trump. But one thing it absolutely hasn’t done is jeopardize the Republican Party’s grip on single-issue, “unshackle the police” voters.[/i[

I mean...they're people who don't give a fuck about their own well being or the well being of others, to the extent that they pose an active risk to the well being and the very lives within their communities-at-large. Given the circumstances, it's perfectly okay to hope for their hasty demise, imo. They're like a quarter step away from being full-on terrorists afaic.

Biden Supporters Are More Worried About the Health Risks of Voting

Hey, this is what I said this yesterday! Democrats have better risk-assessment skills than Trump-supporting Republicans! This time there are, like, graphs tho:

Over all, the voters who said they would be too uncomfortable to vote in person back Mr. Biden, 63 percent to 9 percent [for Trump].

Even so, Mr. Biden does not appear to be at a meaningful enthusiasm disadvantage: 65 percent of his supporters said they were “very enthusiastic” about voting this November, compared with 66 percent of Mr. Trump’s supporters. Importantly, the survey question asked whether respondents were enthusiastic about voting, not whether they were enthusiastic about the candidate they supported — where Mr. Biden appears to be at a more significant disadvantage.

(Flip side is that the six battleground states being tracked offer voting by mail.)

sleeve, Friday, 3 July 2020 15:48 (three years ago) link

i wonder how that would play out at a county level, rather than at the state level. i'd guess that even in states that trump carried, the bulk of the deaths have been in cities or more populated areas, including blue counties in red states

time is running out to pitch in $5 (Karl Malone), Friday, 3 July 2020 15:57 (three years ago) link

Karl OTM - cases and deaths are very correlated with population density for reasons that ought to be obvious. Nevertheless, as the pandemic has progressed, blue and red states (also, roughly, D and R governors) have diverged largely because of different attitude s toward precautions.

zombeekeeper (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 3 July 2020 16:52 (three years ago) link

Importantly, the survey question asked whether respondents were enthusiastic about voting, not whether they were enthusiastic about the candidate they supported — where Mr. Biden appears to be at a more significant disadvantage.

Why is that "importantly"? Voting is what seals the deal and wins the election. Sitting around watching the campaign ads and thinking 'atta boy, you go!' is comparatively unimportant.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:51 (three years ago) link

I don't wanna pick on you sleeve but "who's winning the pandemic, team red or team blue" is something I really hate about COVID discourse.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 3 July 2020 17:59 (three years ago) link

yeah that's fair, it just seemed relevant. I imagine the #s will even out (and deaths are skewed different as noted) but gee what a difference actual state level policy makes

sleeve, Friday, 3 July 2020 18:08 (three years ago) link

is there a correlation with the relative shittiness of state healthcare in general? i.e. states that have foregone medicaid expansion?
