patricia taxxon is a musician and youtuber who has released 43 albums

last month she released a jawdropping microtonal pop single

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2478o311QcQ

and followed it up with a video explaining how and why she made it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDkRfbACbzU

then followed that up with a cyberstep banger, a truly wild pitchshifting stevie wonder cover and one of the best piano ballads I've heard in years

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_czBcs7tFtE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNELQfAwY94

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V8yd5qgf4g

then proceeded to release a trilogy of albums (containing all of the above) over the course of 3 days, with an overarching concept drawn from oskar schlemmer's triadische ballett. these are her 5th, 6th and 7th albums of 2020 so far. they're absolutely phenomenal pop, techno, classical and whatever else she's chosen to throw in there. above all there is a love of melody and the possibilities of melody, and everything is so confidently realised

I listened to your first five links--faves: How & Why Made, "Pretty," also Gelb. So far, I like her music better when she's the one singing, the less processing of her voice the better, also liked the brief instrumental-only passages of Gelb. Will listen to more albums later this week, thanks for posting.

there is so much amazing music, this for instance is just incredible

doraemon/foley artist/pix & bit would seem to be the big 2019 trilogy, if you can just ignore her other 7 albums of last year alone (and i'll surely get around to them)

The basic compositional idea in "Spiral Staircase" is really interesting and I think the composition could work (but lol "pop song"). The electronic timbres are not very interesting imo, though, and I feel like the idea might come across stronger with a more accurate singer - assuming that I understand it correctly: the first half of the first verse is in 12tet in C and then she modulates to B half-flat for the second half but the melody here is still essentially supposed to be in 12tet, just a quarter-tone flat? Because if that's correct (and the musical setting and her description suggest this), I think she's singing a bit out of tune, especially when she has to leap, such that her G half flat veers near F natural and her C half sharp gets close to C natural territory. If she is actually trying to hit these quarter-tones, then cool but that seems like it would be a pretty different idea.

Alternatively, maybe if the whole thing were done with acoustic or amplified instruments with imperfect intonation and she sang it all in her offhand way, that might also work?

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Sunday, 5 July 2020 05:33 (three years ago) link

Sorry, I meant G half sharp veers near G natural, iirc.

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Sunday, 5 July 2020 05:39 (three years ago) link

it's a pretty good effort considering she's never touched microtones before! we all have to start somewhere. i quite like her singing voice (some don't) but yeah trying to sing accurately in quartertones is a pretty herculean task

j. playing grinch up there. why not create? she's even said on Twitter that she hopes to slow down and spend longer on projects, this is basically all practice and training at this point. the fact that so many of the results are so great already is kind of astonishing

imago, Sunday, 5 July 2020 09:47 (three years ago) link

the subjective fact, according to me, that is (she has a video about the impossibility of objective truth)

Spiral Staircase is really interesting, particularly in conjunction with the visuals, until the precise point when it becomes a song. Would pay for an instrumental.

Just started listening to Schwarz, I am a huge sucker for gorgeous synths set against harsh granular shit. Her stuff sounds so fresh to me. That feeling is why I started listening to electronic music in the first place.

i love spiral staircase until the dry vocal comes in

here 1st (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:20 (three years ago) link

it'll grow on you!

'pix & bit' is an absolute start-to-finish knockout of a record, it is up there with 'gelb' and 'rosa' and maybe more weirdly consistent than either despite being 71 minutes long. i've hardly been able to listen to any other artist for a week

imago, Monday, 6 July 2020 22:04 (three years ago) link

there's a lot to dig through, but so far the hyperpop of Beauty is the one for me.

fffv, Friday, 10 July 2020 01:18 (three years ago) link

feel like a track like Moons would hit harder if it had been mastered properly, but if she paid to get things mastered we wouldn't get an album a day, so

Jyväskylä is very good, maybe my favorite so far.

lukas, Friday, 17 July 2020 02:48 (three years ago) link

she ranked it first of all her albums on twitter a while back - it isn't my favourite but then i definitely skew towards her ultramelodic stuff

opening track of Victory Lap ('Hello, I Ruined Music') is possibly the best mash-up i've ever heard, and i've heard everything Cicierega has ever done in that field: https://patriciataxxon.bandcamp.com/album/victory-lap

& seeing as Pix & Bit is still the best album, here's its Neocities page: https://pixandbit.neocities.org/

Hm, what is it that clicks with you about this cover? I'm not really sold on the rapping - is this sampled? Do like "Spiral Staircase" quite a bit.

she's done an ambient instrumental album and it's kind of incredible (if not THAT ambient at points, more a sort of chilled classical thing)

crocus 3-6 is a genuinely stellar run of music

imago, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 15:37 (three years ago) link

It is! The whole thing is straight-up gorgeous though. I like how she varies and steers it towards neo-classical, though only in a nuanced way. It's playful but within a pretty clearly defined space.

This is fantastic. Some sounds maybe too directly autechre-influenced (not that that's a crime or anything) but not all, way more kinetic than lots of recent ae and huge fat tunes on top.

Hah, nice! I'm excited to dig into these.

I really enjoy Patricia Taxxon's music. A few months ago I used some of the more ambient cuts from Traveler, Hotel, Aeroplane, Doraemon, and The Good Night in a documentary series I was working on. She was super cool about it! Her music really enhanced the vibe.
