I'm also glad that Shawn Reynaldo, an old editor of mine, continues to be with me on the cranky side of things-- we used to spend afternoons making fun of all the shallow techno coming from Europe circa 2009-2010

I’ve seen some critique about said editor blocking black techno artists on twitter who disagreed with him but I have no idea whether it was a one-off thing or what

Haven't heard wind of that. Will investigate...

That said, he was always on my side when I vociferously demanded we treat techno and house as originating in the Black and queer communities.

His writing on class in the electronic music scene is also indispensable

Yep, seems to be a side project of Mullen, io.

Overall his catalogue is really solid on whiteloops and blackloops. Big loopy tracks but with a solid structure that lock me in.

I'd never heard of black madonnas before, so I thought it was weird name choice when I first heard of her. I incorrectly read it as "Madonna, but black", and for some time as well.

I don't know her music though only the name!

I sat down to compose a thoughtful reply to this, then realized that I'm lazy, and that also I don't buy her assertion that the more obvious meaning of "Black Madonna" didn't play into her name choice.

Well, she is Polish and from Chicago, right? The most famous of Black Madonnas is in Czestochowa, PL, so I can sort of see her using that name as she was coming up and it becoming more problematic as her star rose.

I think she's a great DJ, but don't care for her productions.

Oh I believe her about the primary meaning, but I'm sure the ambiguity appealed to her as well.
