from the 1970 list - Performance was unhinged but fascinating, I watched it recently and want to see it again. I haven't seen The Conformist or Five Easy Pieces in decades. enjoyed watching M*A*S*H and Dodes’ka-den a couple of months ago.

Close-up, Goodfellas, Days of Being Wild, and Kurosawa’s Dreams aside, 2000 seems like a better film year than 1990 overall, with In the Mood for Love, Werckmeister Harmonies, Code Unknown, In Vanda’s Room, Platform, La Commune, Yi Yi, The Gleaners and I, Songs from the Second Floor

Dan S, Monday, 29 June 2020 03:02 (three years ago) link

I think I mentioned it on the other poll thread, but 2000 is probably the best single movie year in my lifetime, rivaled probably only by 1999.

besides Certified Copy and Uncle Boonmee, 2010 also featured Mysteries of Lisbon, Meek’s Cutoff, and Nostalgia for the Light, all amazing films

Dan S, Tuesday, 30 June 2020 23:27 (three years ago) link

2000 was a great year in retrospect

Dan S, Tuesday, 30 June 2020 23:42 (three years ago) link

a film from 2000 I still haven't seen is Jonas Mekas' As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty

Dan S, Tuesday, 7 July 2020 23:00 (three years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

in the end I don't think any of these are among my favorite films of the last 100 years except L'Avventura

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 00:17 (three years ago) link

I voted Psycho for its many superb aspects, from the plot twist that reliably blindsides every unaware viewer, to its score, cinematography, acting and pacing. It is marred only by its tin-plated pop-psychiatric 'splaining tacked onto the ending as a sop to the audience's deeply shocked sensibilities.

would definitely vote for In the Mood for Love, Sunset Blvd, Rashomon, La Dolce Vita over any of these

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 01:37 (three years ago) link

Maybe the first one, but none of the rest over anything but GoodFellas.

Get the point? Good, let's dance with nunchaku. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 14 July 2020 01:45 (three years ago) link

it's the random Eric-hates-Goodfellas poll

So do I

flappy bird, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 05:26 (three years ago) link

Psycho as a consensus wouldn't be bad

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 22:15 (three years ago) link

xp I think I regard Five Easy Pieces even lower but sure, I’ll take that position

You mean the one where Nicholson plays a layered human being instead of a crazy hotel ghost

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 July 2020 22:24 (three years ago) link

the poll that I thought got the results wrong was 2000, not completely, but enough to bother me

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 22:25 (three years ago) link

some all-time great films that year got few or no votes

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 22:37 (three years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

Dan S, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 00:31 (three years ago) link

still think In the Mood for Love is greater than any film on this list

Dan S, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 00:32 (three years ago) link

lol @ results

I’ll take Yi Yi Lansing third as a moral victory.

"goodfellas" is such trash

budo jeru, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 00:37 (three years ago) link

don't hate it, but there are other films from other decades I liked much more

Dan S, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 00:39 (three years ago) link

OTM!!!!!!

i miss the first ten years of The Shining's history when people knew it was a failure.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 13:41 (three years ago) link

As opposed to the next 30, where exactly one person knows it's a failure.

quite an echo chamber there, Mr Torrance

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 17:08 (three years ago) link

One of our local drive-ins is doing a double feature starting Friday night of POLTERGEIST and THE SHINING. Can't wait! Haven't seen either on a movie screen since their original releases.

Bougy! Bougie! Bougé! (Eliza D.), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 17:12 (three years ago) link

still think In the Mood for Love is greater than any film on this list

― Dan S, Tuesday, July 14, 2020 7:32 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

would've voted for this if it were an option, but i voted for goodfellas instead cause i knew it would annoy the right people

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 17:32 (three years ago) link

Ray Liotta and his Michael J. Fox ass delivery ruin Goodfellas more than anything else. Beyond the utterly unremarkable mafia story, but a better actor would've gone a long way.

flappy bird, Thursday, 16 July 2020 00:20 (three years ago) link

i think you're reaching; he's fine. You need a nonstar in that part to play footsoldier.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 July 2020 00:46 (three years ago) link

what was your vote ?

budo jeru, Thursday, 16 July 2020 00:52 (three years ago) link

Psycho i think.

plus ive heard Henry Hill talk; you dont want Richard Burton's delivery.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 July 2020 00:55 (three years ago) link

if only ray liotta's performance was even close to the worst thing about "goodfellas"

budo jeru, Thursday, 16 July 2020 01:04 (three years ago) link

i miss the first ten years of The Shining's history when people knew it was a failure.

― brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, July 15, 2020 1:41 PM (yesterday)

yeah, and plenty of ppl thought 2001 was an incomprehensible mess

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 16 July 2020 02:25 (three years ago) link

aaaand?

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 July 2020 11:13 (three years ago) link

Goodfellas isn't bad, its reputation is just wildly outsized to me. Feels like a mid-career summation, "Scorsese for the whole family" (I know...), unlike Taxi Driver or KOC, which remain just absolutely relentless and cruel.

flappy bird, Thursday, 16 July 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

I think it's mistrusted bcz it's ridiculously entertaining. It certainly has its moments of "yikes, these guys are monsters" for me, as in the second time Pesci shoots Michael Imperioli and RdN's reaction is "You disgust me... bury him yourself."

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 July 2020 17:09 (three years ago) link

that's a great point, it's fun in a way the others I mentioned absolutely are not

flappy bird, Thursday, 16 July 2020 17:46 (three years ago) link

Will grant that at least the balance in Goodfellas is closer to in-skew than Wolf of Wall Street.

Get the point? Good, let's dance with nunchaku. (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2020 17:48 (three years ago) link

now THAT'S a fun movie!
