has this band gotten more psychedelic or am I just stoned: a memoir

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 02:09 (three years ago) link

I get a real Slowdive vibe from the first track

I want to change my display name (dan m), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 02:22 (three years ago) link

"Shapeshifter" is possibly their "Faded"/"Purple Rain"

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 02:23 (three years ago) link

hold up now, it's been 12 hours

mookieproof, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:01 (three years ago) link

I said possibly!!

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:03 (three years ago) link

Extremely good album indeed.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:05 (three years ago) link

am I mad or is there possibly Deftones cross-influence on this

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:07 (three years ago) link

i hear it too

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:32 (three years ago) link

been forever since i've listened to hum but this is sounding fantastic

ufo, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:40 (three years ago) link

I think "The Summoning" is my fave so far. So heavy, and the fake-out ending is beyond dreamy

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 04:51 (three years ago) link

I have been craving these tones... excellent news

brimstead, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 05:43 (three years ago) link

cloud city >>>>>>

Spottie, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 05:58 (three years ago) link

This is fucking fantastic. First song indeed heavy Slowdive/MBV vibes. The Summoning -> Cloud City -> Folding is just *all time*. What a comeback, man.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 08:46 (three years ago) link

Genuinely never heard of these before. An Angelic Process reference? I'm in.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 09:20 (three years ago) link

Devin Townsend too

imago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 09:28 (three years ago) link

How are the vocals on this? That's always kept Hum records at arms length for me, the guitars and landscapes always sounded great but the vocals were like bland cardboard and dragged everything down to earth. Corgan is a pretty divisive voice but you can't deny his vocals add character.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 10:35 (three years ago) link

I'm listening now and oh good they've drowned him under enormous floods of guitars.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 10:57 (three years ago) link

Sound reminds me of the first My Vitriol album as well, as another possible cross-influence

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 11:31 (three years ago) link

The vocals are mostly super low-key, very 90s.

Maresn3st, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 12:23 (three years ago) link

no one is listening to Hum for the vox but it is kind of remarkable his voice hasn't changed at all in 20+ years

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 12:25 (three years ago) link

listening to Shiner's Schadenfreude, their first in 19 years, which is an impressive hiatus in itself! also 8 tracks with most of them on the longer side. kind of mining a similar vibe in spots. pretty good!

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 16:53 (three years ago) link

I listen for the whole package. Matt Talbot's vox match the songwriting tone - appropriately understated.

Bryan St Pere is definitely playing on this. One reason why they took their time completing the record was due to working around everyone's schedule. I think they only toured in 2015 with the dude from Shiner.

The drumming in "Cloud City" rules pretty hard.

So far this is easily top 10 of the year for me

billstevejim, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 16:55 (three years ago) link

This is pure comfort food.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link

The Summoning -> Cloud City -> Folding is just *all time*.

Nailed it

billstevejim, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:00 (three years ago) link

It's kind of cool how you expect the closer to blossom out into oblivion but instead it recedes into something like a Perfect From Now On outtake.

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:01 (three years ago) link

I would really love to call tracks 5-8 "a solid Side B" but I checked and of course this is one of those two-songs-per-side audiophile deals.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:03 (three years ago) link

i love that they continue to put the running time on the album cover

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:11 (three years ago) link

Don't think I'd heard "Stars" since 120 Mins days, just reminded myself what it sounds like. I should've been into this band!

geoffreyess, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:35 (three years ago) link

but it's not too late, this thread suggests :)

geoffreyess, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:36 (three years ago) link

"Bryan St Pere is definitely playing on this. "
definitely good news, he was a huge part of why the earlier records were so good. Massive drummer

calstars, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

Ha, I was wondering why the Hum thread suddenly lit up.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

kinda surprised there’s this much love here <3

brimstead, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

well it's a bit like when Sleep came back, except arguably even more ILM-beloved (and I'd say considerably better too)

imago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:06 (three years ago) link

considerably better too

Indeed, indeed.

TS: Inlet vs Slowdive

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:13 (three years ago) link

is that the presumed gold standard for shoegaze comebacks eh

imago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:14 (three years ago) link

we'll need an Avalon Emerson remix to be sure

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:15 (three years ago) link

'considerably better' thirded. It is nice how Hum's last album was from before these borads existed, and now making clear how many ppl here love them.

m b v trumps them all tbh – it's best thing they've ever done, as a matter of fact.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:17 (three years ago) link

haha, nicely saved pom

imago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:20 (three years ago) link

I quite liked Slowdive's s/t too, give or take a track or two.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:20 (three years ago) link

how many of the og US gazers have returned is a question

imago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:21 (three years ago) link

(come back, Swirlies!)

imago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:22 (three years ago) link

Doesn't matter, just listen to Holy Fawn.

Wait wasn't it just last week you said 'This Is Your Bloody Valentine' was their best? Or did I imagine that? Made me blink a couple of times!

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:25 (three years ago) link

lol that wasn't me, no. I've been consistently stanning for m b v and knocking Loveless for years!

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

Lol, mea maxima culpa! (putting it down to the fever I had last week)

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:27 (three years ago) link

Knocking Loveless for years

Love Loveless but I do love this :D

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:28 (three years ago) link

my recent controversial MBV opinion is that Feed Me With Your Kiss might be their best EP (along with YMMR obv)

anyway, off-topic sorry

imago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 18:28 (three years ago) link

Proof:

New Ride

Then again, I may have shitposted about MBV last week without realizing it.

xps
